BELL, James
Dr. James Edward Bell, Jr., 80, husband of Jean Martin Bell, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born January 27, 1922, in McCormick, he was a son of the late James Edward Bell and the late Ferol Acker Bell. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina; served an internship and residency at Roper Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina in Obste- trics and Gynecology; was a physician in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Sumter since 1953 with Sumter OB-GYN (formerly The Woman's Clinic, P.A.) He was a member of Santee Presbyterian Church, and was a former longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter, where he served on the Diaconate. Dr. Bell was Past President of the Rotary Club of Sumter, an honorary member of Rotary Club of Lake Marion, recipient of the Order of the Palmetto (2000), Diplomat of the American Board of OB-GYN since 1956, named South Carolina's first volunteer Physician of the Year, volunteer and contractual physician in the local family planning clinics since 1961, member of American Medical Association, South Atlantic OB-GYN Society, Sumter- Clarendon-Lee Medical Society, South Carolina Medical Assoc., South Carolina OB-GYN Society (past-president), South Central Association of OB-GYN (past president), THEGOS Society, Southern Medical Association, South Central OB-GYN Society, was co-founder of The Rib Open Golf Tournament, Board Member of Bank of America, member of the Board of Directors of Carolinas Hospitals and Health Services, Inc., shared services for hospitals in North and South Carolina, Master Mason, member of the Shrine and Royal Order of Jesters, founding chairman of the Utilization Review Committee for Tuomey Regional Medical Center, and former Chief of Staff of Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Surviving besides his wife of Santee, are two sons, James Edward Bell, III and wife, Dawn, of Sumter and Georgetown, and Frederick McDonald (Mac) Bell and wife, Cynthia, of Sumter; two daughters, Katharine (Katsy) Bell Ratterree of Spartanburg, and Anne Middleton (Nancy) Bell of Sumter; stepson, Jack Ryan Martin, Jr., and wife, Meg, of Summerton; a stepdaughter, Jeanne Martin Gasque and husband, John, of Holly Hill; eleven grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
A private burial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Summerton Evergreen cemetery in Summerton, with Rev. John Doubles officiating. Pallbearers will be the grandsons, Charles Edward Ratterree, Benjamin Everett Ratterree, Kyle Thomas McManamy, William Orin Ratterree, James Michael Bell and John Martin Gasque. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church in Sumter, with Dr. Ed McLeod, Rev. Dean Piper, and Rev. John Doubles officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Stephens Funeral Home, Manning, and at other times at the residence, 472 Santee Drive, Santee.

Edna Ann Schott Garforth, 74, wife of Ezra "Bud" Garforth, Jr. of Charleston died Thursday June 6, 2002 at her residence. Mrs. Garforth was born Monday, August 1, 1927 in Yonkers N.Y. a daughter of John Irving Schott and Edna Watson Tommasi Schott. She was a graduate of Sargent College at Boston University and was the co-owner of Gingiss Formalwear, Mrs. Garforth was a volunteer at the Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania, a member of the Country Club of Charleston and St. James Episcopal Church. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at St. James Episcopal Church, 1872 Camp Rd. Entombment will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens. SPEARIN, William
William Everett Spearin age 59 of 119 Hickory Springs Rd. Eutawville died Saturday June 8, 2002 at his home. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday June 11th, 2002 at Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Eutawville. The Ministers Rev. John Scott. Burial place private.
Mr. Spearin was born in Taunton, Mass. a son of the late Richard and Lorraine Nollett Spearin. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, a member of Hagen Hunting Club, and he was a fishing guide.
Survivors his wife, Barbara Bulva Spearin of the home, daughter Darla Hartung of Taunton, Mass.; a son William E. Spearin, Jr. of Charleston; sisters Gail Spearin of Port Lucy, Fla. and Joy Spearin Puerto Rico, brothers Richard, Randall, Russell, Colin, Ronnie and Bobby Spearin all of Taunton, Mass. and six grandchildren.

DUKE, John
KINGSTREE - John Lamar Duke, 79, died Saturday in a Kingstree Nursing Home.
Mr. Duke was born in Kingstree, a son of the late Benjamin F. and Hettie H. Duke. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a retired electrical contractor. Mr. Duke was an Army veteran of W.W.II and a member of Kingstree Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mildred Bingham Duke of Kingstree; one son, Glenn Lamar Duke of North Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Sandra D. Bradham of Cades; one sister, Ruth D. Cook of Kingstree; one brother, Joel Duke of St. Matthews; four grandchildren, Steven J. Brown and Michael J. Brown both of Lake City, Michelle D. Dennis of Virginia and Ben F. Duke of North Myrtle Beach; 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Williamsburg cemetery, directed by WILLIAMSBURG FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home.
SWAIN, Raymond
Raymond Regis Swain, Sr., 101, died on Thursday, June 6, 2002 in a local hospital. Mr. Swain was born June 30, 1900 in Fennelton, Pa. the son of the late George S. Swain and Belle Baker Swain. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Ethel Teresa Seagren Swain and two sons Donald S. Swain and Raymond R. Swain, Jr. He was a resident of Sullivan's Island, a retired Planner and Estimater at Charleston Naval Shipyard (started 1938), American Bridge Co. in Pa., and Real Estate agent for Griffith Real Estate upon retirement. He was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church; a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Men's Club, and Choir at Stella Maris and a lifetime honorary membership in the Men's Club of Sullivan's Island. Mr. Swain is survived by one sister Hilda M. Swain of Sullivan's Island; six sons, Robert R. Swain (Linda), Albany, CA; David C. Swain (Patricia), Montgomery, AL; James C. Swain (Brenda), Mount Air, VA; Gary M. Swain (Mary), Charleston, S.C.; Carl C. Swain and Leonard A. Swain (Jovita), Sullivan's Island, S.C.; and two daughters, Nancy S. Jager (George) of James Island, S.C. and Ethel S. Backus (Phillip) of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; 37 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, three sons, Ronald Bryan Cooper, Jeffrey Allen Cooper and Norman Bradley Cooper all of Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Jessica Lea Cooper of Wadmalaw, S.C.; mother, Julia Ipock of Aynor, S.C.; two brothers, Lewayne Lewis of Washington State, and Lorell Lewis of Aynor, S.C. She also leaves behind four grandchildren.
