BROOKS, Daryl
WALTERBORO - Daryl Lewis Brooks, 45, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 in a Walterboro hospital.
The funeral will be 11:00 a.m., Monday June 10, 2002, in Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Walterboro. Burial will be directed by HAMILTON'S FUNERAL HOME IN WESTVIEW MEMORIAL GARDENS, RUFFIN.
Daryl was born in Walterboro, a son of Benjamin and Eleanor Brooks. He was a member of Mt. Oliver Baptist Church.
He was educated in the public schools of Colleton County, but spent most of his adult life in New York City and US Armed Forces. He was employed with R. G. Reynolds Construction Company.
Survivors are his parents, Benjamin and Eleanor Brooks of the home; sisters: Sharondee Brooks of New York, Marlo Brooks of Atlanta, Georgia and Polly Riley of Jacksonboro; brothers: Chester Brooks of Walterboro and Ernest Dent of Green Pond.
LIPKA, Madelyn
Madelyn Lancaster Lipka, age 74 wife of John William Lipka, died Friday, June 7, 2002 at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 10, 2002 at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue at 11:00 a.m. with entombment to follow in Carolina Memorial Park Mausoluem. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 9, 2002 at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee she was a daughter of the late Jim and Lucy Mitchell. Mrs. Lipka was a homemaker and was a member of Wando Woods Baptist Church. She was a member of the Petal Pushers Garden Club of North Charleston and a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, John William Lipka of Charleston. Three sons, Johnny and Jimmy Lipka both of Jacksonville, Florida and Andrew Lipka of Charleston, one daughter, Carolyn Lipka of Charleston, two grandchildren, Robert E. Heaton, II and Ashley M. Heaton. Memorials may be made to a charity of ones own choice.

ZIPPER, William
William B. Zipper age 91, passed away Friday, June 7, 2002 at his residence at Treyton Oak Towers. Mr. Zipper a native Louisvillian, founded Zipper Gas Heating Co. in 1941 and was president of the firm until his retirement in 1976. He was active in Masonic Organizations, the Presbyterian Church, Beechmont Neighborhood Assoc. and helped form several area optimist clubs. He was an honorary member of the Louisville area chamber of commerce and a member of the Marine League. Bill participated in many business and civic organizations in Beechmont, the South End, and throughout the city. One of his favorite activities for over 40 years was playing Santa Claus for school and church groups. Mr. Zipper is survived by one daughter, Nancy Dodson of New Albany, IN and Dr. Dorothy Coleman and her husband Elton, 4 grandchildren, including David Coleman, his wife Kim of Charleston, S.C. and Sanda Staples and her husband, Mitch of Bay Minette, AL and three great-granddaughters. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at THE ARCH L. HEADY FUNERAL HOME, 3601 TAYLOR BLVD, LOUISVILLE, KY. Visitation will be Sunday 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and after 9:00 a.m. on Monday. Burial will be private. The family request memorial gifts be given to hospice.
HICKS, Carolyn
Anna Carolyn Hicks, of 674 Pelzer Drive, Mount Pleasant; S.C. died June 5, 2002.
Mrs. Hicks was born in South Bend, Ind. on September 8, 1926. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Coker College and a M.A.T. from the Citadel. Mrs. Hicks taught in private and public schools for over 20 years. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Everard R. Hicks, two children, J. Dianne Tennyson, a local art teacher and J. Marc Hicks, a dentist in Florence, S.C., five grandchildren: Jeremy and Jonathan Hicks, Sarah, Rebekah, and Anna Tennyson.
Mrs. Hicks was an active member of the Mount Pleasant Seventh-day Adventist Church.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 9 at 3:00 p.m., at the Mt. Pleasant Seventh-day Adventist Church, located on the corner of Bennett and Hibben Street, in the old village in Mt. Pleasant. All friends are invited to the memorial service.
SWAIN, Raymond
Raymond Regis Swain, Sr., 101, died on Thursday, June 6, 2002 in a local hospital. Mr. Swain was born June 30, 1900 in Fennelton, PA the son of the late George S. Swain and Belle Baker Swain. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Ethel Teresa Seagren Swain and two sons Donald S. Swain and Raymond R. Swain, Jr. He was a resident of Sullivan's Island, a retired Planner and Estimater at Charleston Naval Shipyard (started 1938), American Bridge Co. in PA, and Real Estate agent for Griffith Real Estate upon retirement. He was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church; a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Men's Club, and Choir at Stella Maris and a lifetime honorary membership in the Men's Club of Sullivan's Island. Mr. Swain is survived by one sister Hilda M. Swain of Sullivan's Island; six sons, Robert R. Swain (Linda), Albany, CA; David C. Swain (Patricia), Montgomery, AL; James C. Swain (Brenda), Mount Air, VA; Gary M. Swain (Mary), Charleston, S.C.; Carl C. Swain and Leonard A. Swain (Jovita), Sullivan's Island, S.C.; and two daughters, Nancy S. Jager (George) of James Island, S.C. and Ethel S. Backus (Phillip) of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; 37 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren. DETYENS, William
William J. "Bill" Detyens, 85, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 after an extended illness in a local hospital. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William J. "Bill" Detyens are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Saturday morning, June 8, 2002 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 10:00 o'clock. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Detyens was born in Georgetown, S.C., a son of Sally Maria Cox and Hasford Walker Detyens. He attended Murray Vocational High School in Charleston and received an honorary doctor of humanities degree from Charleston Southern University in 1982.
As a developer, Detyens is probably best remembered as a partner in the construction of Dockside Condominiums on the site of the former Jacksonville Shipyard on the Cooper River in 1956. As Chairman of the Board he guided the shipyard from its birth with two employees in a tiny shack on Laurens Street to the present Wando River facility with over 500 employees before selling the business in 1982.
He was also the developer of Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. For his leadership and ethical conduct in business, he was inducted into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame in 1995.
Bill Detyens' activities as a philanthropist are manifold. In 1972, he was a founder of Trident Academy in Mount Pleasant, established for children with learning disabilities. His support of local churches included donations of land and financial support to St. Paul's AME Church in Wando, Wando Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Charleston, and the Charleston Baptist Association Seaman's Ministry. As a member of the Foundation for the Preservation of Historic Charleston in the Diocese of South Carolina, he was instrumental in the renovation of the chapels of St. Thomas and St. Denis and Pompion Hill in Berkeley County. He actively supported education in the community through generous financial support of First Baptist Church School, Ashley Hall, Bishop England, Miss Mason's School, Porter Gaud, the College of Charleston, the Medical University of South Carolina and Charleston Southern University. In 1995, Detyens endowed a four-year scholarship in his name at The Citadel. He also helped to establish the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston as well as supporting the Roper Hospital Endowment and the Trident Community Foundation.
An avid sportsman, Detyens enjoyed fox hunting in addition to hunting and fishing throughout the world. Perhaps best known as a competitive blue water sailor, he participated for many years in the prestigious Southern Ocean Racing Circuit at the helm of his boat, Wando Lady. Detyens was an organizer of the Charleston Ocean Racing Association, which promoted offshore racing in the southeast. He was a member of the Hibernian Society, The Elk's Club, the Hobcaw Yacht Club, the Carolina Yacht Club, the Coral Reef Yacht Club of Miami, Green Turtle Yacht Club, Bahamas, the North American Yacht Racing Association, the Propeller Club, the Charleston Maritime Association, the Navy League, and Ducks Unlimited.
Surviving are his wife, Susie S. Detyens, three sons, William R. Detyens of Mount Pleasant, Hasse H. Detyens of Charleston, William J. Detyens, II of Mount Pleasant, three daughters, Judy Ann Stewart of Mount Pleasant, Margaret Ann Lamb of Cobbtown, Georgia, Mary Alice Lambrakos of Mount Pleasant, three step-children, Marilyn S. Vierra of Mount Pleasant, James H. Small, Jr., of Isle of Palms, S.C., Zan S. Walter of Tampa, Florida, 15 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
