CHARLOTTE, N. C. Charles E. Jeter, 89, of 413 Keswick Ave., Charlotte, husband of Inez Jeter, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003 at Presbyterian Hospital.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Charles E. Jeter and Vernon Jeter, both of Charlotte; two brothers-in-law, James and John David Jeter, both of Carlisle; three sisters-in-law, Helen Johnson of Bayonne, N. J., Clara Tucker of Carlisle and Daisy Davis of Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Charlotte, N. C. Burial will be at 2 p.m. today in Jeter's Chapel Church Cemetery in Carlisle. Grier Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. This announcement courtesy of the Whitney Funeral Home.
Joseph L. Trovato
SPARTANBURG - Joseph Leopold Trovato, 84, formerly of Sunridge Drive, died Thursday, Aug.14, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Corona, N.Y., he was a son of the late Carlo and Rose Glorioso Trovato and the husband of the late Rose Mary Logiudice Trovato. He was a car salesman and musician and a member of the New York Musician's Union.
Survivors include two daughters, Carla Chandler of Spartanburg and Barbara Cooley of Marietta, Ga.; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. A private graveside memorial service will be held Sunday at Heritage Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Larry Wilkes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304; or The Alzheimer's Association, Upstate S.C. Chapter, 119 S. Dean Street, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Corrie F. Horne
Corrie Fowler Horne, age 93, of 133 Gideon St., Jonesville, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at 5:30 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Horne was the widow of Boyce (Rooster) Horne. She was born in Jonesville Dec. 18, 1909, a daughter of the late Harrison David and Nannie James Fowler. Mrs. Horne was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and was retired from the Union County Schools where she worked in the cafeteria at Jonesville High School.
Mrs. Horne was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p. m. Tuesday at Holcombe's Jonesville Chapel by the Rev. Joe Stover, the Rev. Lawton Neely and the Rev. Jerry Lawson. Burial will follow in Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is at the home of her niece, Brenda Sanders, 102 Academy St., Jonesville. They will receive friends at the Jonesville Chapel from 7 until 8:30 tonight. Memorials may be made to Gilead Baptist Church, 748 Gaffney Highway, Jonesville, S.C., 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Phyllis Anne Jeter
ISLE OF PALMS Memorial services for Phyllis Anne Jeter, who died July 26, 2003, wife of Robert C. Jeter Sr. of Isle of Palms, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Jeter Chapel at the Jeter Family Cemetery, Jeter Cemetery Road in Santuc. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Phyllis Jeter Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Citadel, c/o The Brigadier Foundation, 171 Moultrie St., Charleston, S.C. 29401. Jeno Laszlo Schmidt
Jeno Laszlo Schmidt, 67, widower of Maria E. Schmidt, of 720 Lakeside Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003 at his home. Mr. Schmidt was born in Nagyszokyo, Hungary, Aug. 2, 1936. He was the retired manager of the former Ace Sweater Mill of Union. Mr. Schmidt received the Order of the Palmetto from Gov. Carroll A. Campbell and a Letter of Recognition from President Ronald Reagan for his annual "Senior Citizens Appreciation Day."
Surviving are four sons, Eugene Schmidt of Burlington, N.C., Alexander Schmidt of Staten Island, N.Y., Nicholas Schmidt of Charleston and Robert Schmidt of Long Beach, Calif., and eight grandchildren. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The SR. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Nell Blanton
Nellie Mae Waldrop Blanton, 70, of 1627 Kelly Road, wife of Acie (Bill) Blanton, died at her residence Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at 3:25 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Blanton was born in Spartanburg County on Aug. 20, 1933, a daughter of the late George Waldrop and Florine Sherbert Waldrop Gallman and stepdaughter of the late R. E. Gallman Sr. She was a member of Mt. Joy Baptist Church where she had taught the Young Couples Sunday School Class for many years and was a former director for the W.M.U. and served on the church pulpit committee.
Mrs. Blanton was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School, Spartanburg Junior College and Limestone College. She was retired from Union County Schools, having taught math at Monarch Elementary School and Union Middle School. Mrs. Blanton was named Teacher of the Year at Monarch Elementary in 1976 and Teacher of the Year at Union Middle School in 1992.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Linda Blanton Jolly of Union; a sister, Betty W. Atkinson of Union; a brother, R.E. Gallman Jr. of Union; and five grandchildren, Dustin Blanton, Daniel Blanton, Blake Varner, Ashton Jolly and Derek Jolly. Mrs. Blanton was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Blanton.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Joy Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan West and the Rev. Dr. Robert Blanton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dustin Blanton, Blake Varner, R.E. Gallman IV, Jeff Atkinson, Eddie Teague and Doug Lawson. The staff of Hospice Care of South Carolina is asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

Claude Morris
William Claude Morris, 84, of 102 Davis St., husband of Ruby Smith Morris, died at his residence Monday, Aug. 18, 2003. Mr. Morris was born in Union on April 9, 1919, a son of the late Sam and Eva Proctor Morris. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, a former deacon, former member of the church choir for over 40 years and was a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years where he was a substitute teacher for the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class and was a member of Union Masonic Lodge #75. Mr. Morris was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Sears. Mr. Morris was first married to the late Marjorie Shirley Morris.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Jean Morris of Greenville; a sister and brother-in-law, Vera M. Crocker and the Rev. James W. Crocker Sr. of Boiling Springs; a brother, Paul S. Morris of Boise, Idaho and a number of nieces, nephews, step-children and step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Benny Green and the Rev. James W. Crocker Sr. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with Masonic rites.
Active pallbearers will be Dennis Russell, James W. Crocker Jr., William Earl Sprouse, Ronald Parker, Theron Adams and Harold D. Lawson. Members of the Jimmy Smith Sunday School Class are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.

Carl W. Reid
CLIFTON, N. J. Funeral services for Carl W. Reid, 89, widower of Julia Pereksta Reid, were held this morning at the Shook Funeral Home in Clifton. Burial was in East Ridgelawn Cemetery. A native of Woodruff, Mr. Reid had lived in Clifton for more than 60 years. He retired in 1979 from Howe-Richardson Scale Co. after 15 years and had also worked for Curtiss-Wright for many years. He was a member of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Church and the Clifton Stamp Society.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol Barbour of Dunnellon, Fla.; a son, John of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters, Virginia Smith of Union, Eleanor Babb of Bishopville and Martha Price of Union. Mr. Reid was predeceased by his wife Julia, three sisters, Valley Mae Comer, Roxi Crawford and Elizabeth Clark and brothers, Clyde, Woodrow, Paul and Joe. In lieu of flowers,, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 468 Parish Drive, Wayne, N.J. 07470 Shock Funeral home of Clifton, N J., was in charge of arrangements.
Jerry D. Vaughn
FOREST CITY, N.C. Jerry Donald Vaughn, 47, husband of Teresa Smith Vaughn, of 134 Sandy Mush Road, Forest City, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Vaughn was a native of Union, a son of Inez Fowler Waddell of Spartanburg and the late Bobby Dean Vaughn. He worked for a pool table manufacturing company and was of the Church of God faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, John Paul Vaughn of the home; two daughters, Nikki V. Millwood of Union and Angela Black Robertson of Boiling Springs; two sisters, Cindy Davis and Ashley Walker, both of Spartanburg, and three grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, N.C., with the Rev. Kyle Turner officiating. Visitation will be immediately after the service. McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Catherine Reed Walsh
LAKE WYLIE Catherine Reed Walsh, 63, of Lake Wylie died in her sleep Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral home, 4431 Old Monroe Road, Indian Trail, N.C. with graveside services at 5 p.m. in Union Memorial Gardens in Union. Mrs. Walsh was born on Feb. 18, 1940 in Fairfax, Va., a daughter of the late Wilford and Teresa Dove. She is preceded in death by a brother, Buddy Dove, Mrs. Walsh was a member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Clifford Walsh, sons, Timothy C. Reed and wife, Victoria and Antony J. Reed and wife Betty; grandchildren Brandon, Austin, Noah, Cheyenne, Dakota and Douglas James; brothers, Bob and George Dove; and a sister in heart and love, Lucille Money Maker. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, N.C. 28204. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Indian Trail/Matthews.
Mary M. Hawkins
WHITMIRE Mary Lou Matthews Hawkins, 75, of 259 Eaves Road, Whitmire, wife of Bobby J. Hawkins, died at her residence Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, after a long illness. Mrs. Hawkins was born in Greenville, March 26, 1928, a daughter of the late Ernest and Mae Fields Matthews. She was retired from Kendall Co. of Newberry and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Joanie Gault of the home, Joyce Sinclair and Sarah Holden, both of Whitmire; a son, Johnny H. Holden of Ridgeville; two sisters, Ruth Lee and Nancy Wix, both of Union; three brothers, Jake Matthews of Whitmire, Paul Matthews of Buffalo and Richard Matthews of Lexington; 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hawkins was predeceased by a daughter, two sons, two sisters and a brother, Mary A. Johnson, Larry (PeeWee) Matthews, Paul Robert Holden, Sarah Johnson, Vera Touchton and Bill Matthews. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Chaplain Jim Hager. Active pallbearers will be Michael Crocker, Marshall Mull, Bruce Mull and Clay Morris.
The following are asked to assemble at the cemetery Friday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: James (Bo) Gault and Wayne Sinclair. After 2 p.m. Thursday the body will be at the home, 259 Evans Road, Whitmire, where it will remain until the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
