WEST COLUMBIA - Services for Dr. Virgil Clifton Summer, Jr., 81, retired chairman and CEO of SCANA Corporation, of West Columbia will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2002, at Our Savior Lutheran Church with burial to follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. Dr. Summer died Saturday, January 19, 2002, following a brief illness. He was born August 21, 1920, in Spartanburg, S.C., a son of the late Virgil Clifton, Sr., and Maude Tiner Summer. He started work after high school graduation at the age of 16 at SCE&G;'s Parr Steam Plant by sweeping floors and mowing grass. He was the sole supporter of his mother, siblings and invalid father. After a year on the job, Dr. Summer began a lifelong pursuit of education with the study of engineering and management courses through the International Correspondence School. Having passed the state examination for his professional engineering license, he later entered the University of South Carolina and earned a master of science degree in engineering in 1968. After his retirement, Dr. Summer received a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Southern California College of Business and Management in 1999.
Dr. Summer's tenure at SCE&G; was interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to Parr and then began a succession of moves among SCE&G; power plants. He was promoted to vice president and named to the board of directors in 1966. The next year he was promoted to senior vice president and named Engineer of the Year by the S.C. Society of Professional Engineers. The SCE&G; Board of Directors named the company's first nuclear plant the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in 1971.
He was elected president and chief operating officer in 1977 and was named president and chief executive officer in 1982. After stepping down as chief executive officer and continuing to serve as chairman in 1985, he became chairman emeritus in 1986.
During Dr. Summer's tenure as chief executive officer, he developed a program of corporate social responsibility, including greater job opportunities for minorities, a customer assistance program, an employee Good Neighbor Fund to help the needy, a number of education programs and a foundation to assist with community service projects, which was named the Summer Foundation. His efforts were recognized by President Ronald Reagan in 1982.
Dr. Summer was active in many local and state organizations during his tenure at SCE&G; and SCANA. He continued his lifelong legacy of community service and leadership throughout his retirement years. Honors included International Correspondence School National Man of the Year and ICS Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Volunteer of the Year by the United Way of S.C., the Tree of Life Award from the Jewish National Fund, Humanitarian of the Year by the Palmetto Society of the United Way of the Midlands, Distinguished Alumnus by the USC College of Engineering and Order of the Palmetto. He was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by Newberry College.
At the time of his death, he was chairman of the board of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and was leading its capital campaign. Dr. Summer was a member of the Columbia YMCA Board of Directors. He served on the board of the Lexington Medical Center.
Dr. Summer devoted his life to helping others, both through his corporate positions, his volunteer leadership capacities and through personal assistance to many in their time of need. His presence and support will be sorely missed by all.
Surviving is his wife, Vera Boland Summer of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda S. and Jim Nunamaker of Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Michale "Mike" C. and Susan Summer of Lexington and Dr. Kenneth V. and Dr. Gail Summer of Hickory, N.C.; grandchildren, Alicia Nunamaker Truesdail of Cary, N.C., Amy J. Nunamaker of Atlanta, Ga., Jeremy C. and Kyle M. Summer of Lexington, Jessica and Melissa Summer of Hickory, N.C.; sister, Beverly Lee of Timms, Fla. Dr. Summer was preceded in death by his brother Sidney T. Summer.

CREELEYVILLE - Mrs. Vernell Morris Tisdale, 82, widow of Hugh Dave Tisdale, died Sunday in a Kingstree hospital.
Mrs. Tisdale was born in Andrews, a daughter of the late Honie and Lorraine Wilson Morris. She was a homemaker and a member of Greeleyville Baptist Church.
Surviving are, one son, Herman Tisdale of Greeleyville; one daughter, Juanita Stoll of Newberry; three sisters, Bertie Davis of Andrews, Clara Sowell and Annie Flowers, both of Lancaster; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

BEAUFORT, S.C. - Norine Amanda Smoak Benton, 90, wife of Turner R. Benton, died Sunday, January 20, 2002, in a Beaufort hospital.
Visitation will be Monday, January 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., at ANDERSON FUNERAL HOME.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 22, at 2 p.m., at the Baptist Church of Beaufort, followed by burial in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Benton was born September 12, 1911, in Walterboro, S.C., to the Sylvester Hartley Smoak and Emma Myria Hiott Smoak. She was a homemaker and had been married
to her husband for 65 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church of Beaufort.
Surviving, in addition to her husband of Beaufort, are a son, David Turner Benton of Bay, St. Louis, Miss.; a daughter, Marion Norine Wisely of Yemassee; a brother, Pete Smoak of Walterboro; four sisters, Gladys Benton of Ravenel, Mattie Jean Jordan of Round O, Emme Del Nettles and Allie Elliot, both of Charleston; and four grandchildren.

ASH, N.C. - JoAnn Platt Cribb, 54, Arvil Court, died Saturday, January 19, 2002, in the a North Carolina hospital.
Mrs. Cribb was born on June 28, 1947, in Charleston, S.C. She was a daughter of Dorothy Mae Ward Platt, Ash, N.C.; and the late Admiral Dewey Platt.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sons, William Glenn Remley, Ash, N.C., Mitchell Dewey Cribb, Ft. White, Fla., and William Earl Cribb, Ash, N.C., two daughters, Crystal Lynn Cribb, Fayetteville, N.C., and Debra Jojuanne Conner, Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Sandra Simmons, Ash, N.C., and Annette Platt, Virginia Beach, Va.; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, January 22, in the Brunswick Funeral Service Chapel by the Rev. Gerald Kirby. Burial will follow in the Platt Family cemetery, Brooksville, S.C.
