MCCURDY, Catherine
Catherine Layton McCurdy, age 95, died on Saturday, April 27th in Charleston. She had been in declining health for the past 6 months.
She was born in Marion, S.C. on March 31, 1907 to the late David Albert Layton and Mary Elizabeth Berry Layton. She was a graduate in Nutritional Sciences of the Kellogg Institute and the University of Michigan (1927). Following her education she worked at the Polyclinic and the Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. She returned to South Carolina to work at the Saudners Memorial Hospital in Florence where she met her future husband, the late William Barclay McCurdy. After the death of her husband, in 1979, Mrs. McCurdy moved to Charleston, residing for many years in the Ashley House. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a life member of the Ladies Benevolent Society, a board member of the Florence Crittenton Home of Charleston and the Bethel Methodist Church. Catherine McCurdy is best remembered as one with a positive attitude about life and a friend to young people. She was constantly optimistic and inspired her family and friends to be the same. Kindness was her guiding principal. She stayed intellectually involved in her field well ahead of the current trends on vitamins and neutriceuticals.
She had two sons, the late Dr. William Barclay McCurdy, Jr. of Camden, and his widow, Olga Lanoway McCurdy, and Dr. Robert Layton McCurdy of Charleston, and his wife, Gwen Atkinson McCurdy; 6 grandchildren, Nancy McCurdy Stevenson of Columbia, William Barclay McCurdy III of Charleston, Emily McCurdy Denneny of Charlotte, Robert Lanoway McCurdy of Columbia, Robert Layton McCurdy, Jr. of San Francisco, and David Barclay McCurdy of Charleston; 3 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside service in Florence on Wednesday at 3 p.m., at Mt. Hope cemetery, and a memorial service in Charleston at a time to be announced. CHIZEK, Charles
Charles T. Chizek, 83, of Mt. Pleasant formerly of Chicago died Friday, April 26 at a local nursing home. Born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Lawrence and Maude Costley Chizek. Mr. Chizek was a former chauffer driver for funeral homes in the Chicago area. He enjoyed going for walks and walking dogs in his neighborhood. Mr. Chiznek is survived by two daughters, Donna Graybill of Mt. Pleasant, and Deanna Donnelly of Clarkston, Washington, a brother, Lewis Chizek of Richardson, Texas, and four grandchildren, Debra Turner of Charleston, Dawn Szymas of Grandhaven, Michigan, Tina Kirkland and Tara Graybill both of Mt. Pleasant. Six great-grandchildren also survive Mr. Chizek. The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL. GODFREY, William
DORCHESTER - William Rhett Godfrey, age 41, of 221 Sprucewood Dr. died Friday, April 26 in the Charleston Medical University Hospital.
He was born in Laurens County and was the son of Helen Rochester Godfrey of Laurens and the late Haskell W. (Hack) Godfrey.
Mr. Godfrey was a graduate of Clemson University, member of the ALPHA GAMMA RHO fraternity and a former IPTAY member. He was formerly employed in Golf Course maintenance and was a member of Springdale United Methodist Church in Clinton.
He is survived by his wife, Tracey Whitmire Godfrey of the home; one daughter, Amanda Kaye Godfrey and one son, Joshua William Godfrey both of the home; his mother, Helen R. Godfrey of Laurens; two sisters, Juanita N. Sanders and Joyce N. Finley both of Clinton.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Lawn cemetery in Laurens.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

ANDREWS - Dan Vernon Player, 69, of the Spring Gulley community, died Saturday, April 27, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral service will be 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at the Spring Gulley Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, directed by ANDREWS CHAPEL OF MCKENZIE FUNERAL HOME.
Visitation will be 7-9, Monday, April 29, 2002, at the funeral home.
Mr. Player was born December 23, 1932, in Williamsburg County, a son of Daniel E. Player and Elizabeth McConnell Player. He was retired sales clerk for Swinnie Supply and was a security guard for Sampit Lumber Co. He was a member of the Bloomingvale Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He is predeceased by a daughter, Julie P. Goude.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Mrs. Victoria M. Player of Andrews, are three sons, Vernon Player and John Player of Andrews, Larry Player of Bonneau; three brothers, Charles Player and Perry Player both of Andrews, Ronald Player of Russellville; three sisters, Joanne P. Howard of Russellville, Leila P. Robinson of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Christine P. Strickland of Goose Creek; 10 grandchildren.
BUNCH, Marguerite
Mrs. Marguerite Fennell Bunch, 63, wife of Oscar Bunch, of 122 Highland Ave., Summerville, died Thursday, at a Charleston hospital. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 29, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Zion Fair Baptist Church, Varnville, S.C., with the Rev. Norman Jamison, officiating. Mrs. Bunch was born April 5, 1939 in Islandton, S.C., a daughter of the late Housie Fennell, Sr., and Mrs. Sheldonia Glover Fennell. She attended the public schools of Colleton County and was employed for many years as a nursing assistant at St. Vincent Hospital in New York City.
Surviving are her husband, Oscar Bunch of Summerville, S.C., one son, Gregory (Loretta) Fennell of Summerville; 11 sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Trudy Hamilton, Ms. Allean Vennings, Mrs. Sadie Joyner, all of Walterboro, S.C., Mrs. Beverlyn Jamison, Mrs. Clara Jamison and Mrs. Dorothy Mears, all of Islandton, S.C., Mrs. Thelma Broomer and Mrs. Jeanette Gardner both of New York City, Mrs. Selena (Buster) Robertson of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Lucille Parker of Burton, S.C., and Mrs. Valerie Boles of Beaufort, S.C.; four brothers, Talbert of Lodge, S.C., Herbert Lee (Mary Ann) Fennell, William Housie Fennell, Jr., and Michael (Karen) Fennell all of Islandton, S.C. She is also survived by five grandchildren.

Eugene McGinnis Fox, 92, husband of Mary Elizabeth Fox, of Johns Island, S.C., died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at a local hospital.

NIMMONS, Irene
Irene F. Gunnells Nimmons, of Bamberg, S.C., wife of the late Rodney Nimmons, died Saturday morning, April 27, 2002, at Bamberg Nursing Center.
Born September 30, 1914, in Bamberg, she was the daughter of the late Ossie Fail and the late Lula Mae Tucker. She was a member of Ehrhardt Baptist Church, Ehrhardt, S.C. She was the School District #2 Lunchroom Manager. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Funeral services will be April 29, 2002, 3 p.m., at Ehrhardt Baptist Church, Ehrhardt, S.C. Burial at Friendship Baptist Church, Barnwell, S.C. Rev. Ralph Warren, assisted by Rev. Timmy Gunnells and Jerry Fail, officiating.

Glenda Faye Segars, 58, of North Charleston, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, in a local hospital.

Born in Cumberland County, Tenn., on September 12, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Arthur O. Kilgore and Christine Reeves Kilgore, of Mayland, Tenn.
Mrs. Segars was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She was the owner of Imported Car Parts. She was of the Nazarene Faith.
Survivors include, her mother, Christine Reeves Kilgore, of Mayland, Tenn., a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sarah Ellisor, of Ladson; two sisters, Peggy Evans, of Crossville, Tenn., and Margaret McNeal, of Charleston; seven brothers, Eddie Kilgore, of Crossville, Tenn., Joe Kilgore, of Maryland, Tenn., Dallas Kilgore, of Mayland, Tenn., Jerry Kilgore, of Mayland, Tenn., Ronnie Kilgore, of Crossville, Tenn., Bobby Kilgore, of Crossville, Tenn., and Danny Kilgore, of Mayland, Tenn., two grandchildren, Melissa Ellison and Larry Ellison and one great-grandchild, Chazz Ellison. She was preceded in death by her husband, Betha "Tony" Finley Segars and a son Larry Ellison.

Robert Joseph White, 44, of Goose Creek, SC died Friday, April 26, 2002 at his residence. Mr. White was born in Charleston, SC, a son of Paul Ernest White and Betty McMillan White. He retired from Charleston Naval Shipyard and graduated from Trident Tech.
Surviving are his parents of Mt. Pleasant, SC, two daughters, Jennifer White of London, Kentucky and Crystal White of Moncks Corner, SC, two brothers, Timmy White and his wife Melanie of Awendaw, SC and Paul White, Jr., of Atlanta, GA, three sisters, Paula Huff and her husband Bill, of James Island, SC, Terri Schwerin and her husband, Jules of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Susan Kellum and her husband, Tommy of Mt. Pleasant, SC and one grandson, Dillon of London, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael D. White.
