Dennis E. Akers

GREER Dennis Eugene Akers, 60, of 23 Gibson Oak Dr., died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003 at home. He was the widower of Betty Johnson Akers. A native of Kentucky, he was an employee of Motion Industries, Inc. and attended Praise Cathedral. Surviving are his parents, Lester L. and Emma Gene Moore Akers of Lyman and a special friend, Patsy Phillips of Union.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wood Mortuary conducted by the Rev. Jerry Madden. Burial will be in Wood Memorial Park. The family is at the home of his parents, 728 Jordan Road, Lyman, 29365. Visitation will be from 7 until 9 tonight at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Youth Building Program, Praise Cathedral, P.O. Box 287, Greer, S.C. 29652. Wood Mortuary Inc. of Greer has charge of arrangements.

Juanita Smith Scruggs
Homemaker

Juanita Smith Scruggs, 80, of 117 North Boyce St., widow of Woodrow Scruggs, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at 10:40 in Ellen Sager Nursing Home after a long illness. Mrs. Scruggs was born in Union on March 27, 1923, a daughter of the late Wiley Smith and Lois West Smith. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church and the Jessie Mae Crowe Sunday School Class. She attended Union schools and was a homemaker.

Surviving are a son, Wylie Scruggs of Union; sisters, Alien Smith of Union, Lillie Mae Scruggs of Gaffney, Clara Wright of Rutherfordton, N.C. and Mary Lee Allen of Abbeville; a brother, William Smith of Union and a special niece, Donna Cody of Union and a number of other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Scruggs was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Ray Smith.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ralph Bowling. Burial was in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Donald Cohen, Bob Gist, Franklin Pridemore, Roger Harris, Eddie Smith and Judd Gregory. The Jessie Mae Crowe and the Loyalty Sunday School Classes of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church were asked to sit in a group.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night and was placed in the church at 1 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 117 North Boyce St. Memorials may be made to Duncan Acres United Methodist Church, 417 Rice Ave., Union, S.C. 219379, or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Annie Made Dawkins
Carlisle resident

Annie Made Dawkins, 87, widow of Samuel Mack Dawkins, died Monday, Sept.1, 2003, in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

Reginald Chewning
Retired farmer

MANNING Reginald (Bump) Chewning, 93, husband of Rounette McCabe Chewning, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003, at his home in Manning. Mr. Chewning was born Sept. 8, 1909, in Manning, a son of the late Claude Clinton and Mary McCoy Chewning. He was a retired farmer and a lifelong member of Jordan United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 70 years are a daughter, Jean Hewitt of Manning; a daughter-in-law, Rose Chewning of Union; two grandsons, Craig Hewitt of Manning and Kenneth Chewning of Augusta, Ga., a brother, Fred Chewning of Manning; and a half-sister, Frances Howell, of Gaden City. He was preceded in death by a son, Reginald Claude Chewning, and a grandson, Reggie Chewning.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Revs. Joseph Poston and Miriam Hadden will officiate. Burial will follow in Jordan United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150 or to Jordan United Methodist Church c/o Colleen Bochette, 2048 Bethlehem Road, Manning, S.C. 29102. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

James Allen Alston
Newberry County native

WHITMIRE James Allen (Dad) Alston, 65, died Saturday, Aug.30, 2003, at Central Carolina Health and Rehab Center in Columbia. He was born in Newberry County, Oct. 15, 1937, a son of Beatrice H. Alston of Maybinton and the late Mack C. Alston. Mr. Alston was a devoted father and a wonderful provider to Betty A. Mathis and children.

Surviving in addition to his mother are three daughters, Beatrice A., Carrie L., and Betty A. Mathis, all of Newberry; a granddaughter, Kacherish T. Mathis of Newberry; seven aunts, two uncles, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunter's Funeral home, 308 Main St., Whitmire. Burial will be in Seekwell Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. today. Hunter's Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.

Michael T. Murphy
City of Union employee

Michael T. Murphy, 40, husband of Andrea (Ann) Morris Murphy, of 105 Partridge Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at 5:10 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Annie Mae Dawkins
Domestic homemaker

CARLISLE Annie Mae Dawkins, 87, of Carlisle, widow of Samuel Mack Dawkins, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003 in White Oak Manor in Spartanburg. She was born in Union County on April 1, 1916, a daughter of the late Jesse and Alice Jeter. She was a member of Purity Baptist Church and a domestic homemaker. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and attended Union County schools.

Surviving are a daughter, Shermadine McCoy of Columbia; a sister, Sallie Curenton of Santuc; a grandson reared in the home, Andre D. McCoy of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Purity Baptist Church in Blair conducted by the Rev. Cliff Dye. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be from 6 until 8 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church Friday afternoon at 2:30 to await the hour of service. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Michael T. Murphy
City of Union employee

Michael T. Murphy, 40, husband of Andrea (Ann) Morris Murphy of 105 Partridge Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at 5:10 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Murphy was born in Union on Oct. 25, 1962, a son of Margaret Puckett Murphy of Pensacola, Fla., and the late Wayne Rogers Murphy Sr. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and attended Ottaray Baptist Church. Mr. Murphy was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Tech and was employed by the City of Union.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Kayla LeRee Murphy of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Suzy and Dennis Linder of Pensacola, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne Rogers (Jay) Murphy Jr., and Pam Murphy of Jonesville; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jerri and Caroll Sailors of Union; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul and Mary Morris, Paula and Scott Gibson, Charnell (Kissy) and Shane Alman, all of Union and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Angelia Price. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Davis, Bunny Carter, Kenny Peigler, Jimmy Huffstickler and Butch Dill. Mr. Murphy's co-workers and former co-workers of the City of Union are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 3:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 105 Partridge Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mamie F. May
Former United Merchants employee

Mamie Fallaw May, 75, of 709 Rice Avenue Ext. died Thursday, Sept.4, 2003 at 6:35 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mrs. May was born in Gaffney on Dec. 12, 1927, a daughter of the late Arthur Harley and Bertha Bradley Fallaw. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church and was formerly employed with United Merchants, Union Plant.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Claudia M. and Frankie Greer of Union; two sisters, Virginia F. Ivey and Pearl F. Crocker, both of Union; two brothers, Earl Fallaw of Franklin, Tenn., and Weldon F. Fallaw of West Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Susan Gerring May of Greer; four grandsons, Alex and Donna Greer of Gaffney, Chad and Tonya Greer of Jonesville, Brad and Laura May of Germany and Matt May of Taylors; and a great-grandson, Austin Charles Greer of Gaffney.

Mrs. May was predeceased by a son, Terry J. May, and two brothers, Randolph Fallaw and Gene Fallaw. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Carroll Calvert. Members of the Madeline Holcombe Sunday School Class of Westside Baptist Church are asked to sit in a group at the cemetery.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Frankie and Claudia Greer, and will receive friends at Union Memorial Gardens immediately following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to the Oakmont Nursing Home Activity Fund, 709 Rice Ave., Ext., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Adam Brown
Employee of Rick's Car Wash

SPARTANBURG - Jonathan Adam Brown, 17, of 16-B Lake Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003. He was a native of Spartanburg County and was the son of Terry Don Brown of Spartanburg and Rhonda Brandon Wood of Spartanburg. He was an employee of Rick's Car Wash in Spartanburg.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by sisters, Heather Brown and Shannon Lowe of Spartanburg; and brothers, Brad Millwood of Chester and Danie Salanis of Spartanburg. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the home of his mother, 16-B Lake Drive, Spartanburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ada Brown Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 160427, Boiling Springs, S.C. 29316. The family will be at their respective homes. Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs has charge of arrangements.

Doris L. Canupp
Retired from Lockhart Plant

SHARON Doris Lemons Canupp, 75, of 3946 Miller Road, Sharon, widow of Edward Canupp, died at her residence Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at 9:25 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Canupp was born in Spartanburg County on Feb. 14, 1928, a daughter of the late Homer and Louise Fowler Lemons. She attended Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Canupp was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant.

Surviving are two daughters, Pam C. Foster of the home and Jean Canupp of Lockhart; two sons, Bill Canupp of Richburg and Dean Canupp of Aiken; two sisters, Sue Farr and Easter Steele, both of Union; four brothers, Orien Lemons of Plainview Texas, Ned Lemons of Pacolet, Ray Lemons of Jonesville and Jimmy Lemons of Adamsburg; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Canupp was predeceased by two brothers, Willie Lemons and Dan Lemons. Funeral services will be held 4:30 p.m. today at Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers and the Rev. Paul Childers. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Todd Foster, Kenny Martin, Keith Roberts, William Erwin, Troy Canupp and Aaron Martin. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7 until 9 and was placed in the church at 3:30 this afternoon to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 3946 Miller Road, Sharon. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, Rock Hill, S.C. 29730. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
