STEVENS, SR., James
LORIS - Former Horry County State Senator James P. Stevens, Sr., 82, of Loris, S.C. died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. He served as State Senator from Horry County from 1955 through 1976, longer than any other senator in the history of Horry County.
He was born on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1920 in Loris, S.C., the son of the late McDuffie P. and Lalla M. Stevens. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Madeleine M. Stevens of Loris, S.C., 3 sons, James P. Stevens, Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline Holly, Sunset Beach, N.C., Randle McQueen Stevens and his wife, Mary Ann Jinx, Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Douglas Yancey Stevens and his wife, Cloydeanne Tina, Denton, Texas and a daughter, Victoria Joy Stevens, Myrtle Beach, S.C., a sister, Lalla S. West and brother-in-law, Grady J. West, Loris, 5 grandchildren, James P. Stevens, III, Natalie Shawn Stevens, Ashley Leigh Stevens, Zachary Price Hartman Stevens and Melody Lauren Stevens. He is pre-deceased by a brother, Thomas McDuffie Stevens.
He was a graduate of Loris High School where he excelled in sports, playing football, baseball, basketball and track. He won the state championship in the high jump and pole vault. He entered the University of South Carolina in 1949 and was a 1952 graduate of the University of South Carolina Law School where he served as President of the Law School Student Body, a member of the Wig and Robe, a member of the Law School Honor Council Debate Team 1951-1952, all while supporting a wife and two sons and working over 50 hours per week for the Columbia Country Club and as a page in the South Carolina Senate.
He was a member of the Loris First United Methodist Church and teacher of the Men’s Bible Class, a Master Mason, member of the VFW and the American Legion, a World War II veteran, U.S. Coast Guard, July 1940 June 1946.
He was the founder of The Stevens Law Firm, P.C. of Loris, S.C., established in 1952 and practiced law from 1952 until his retirement in 1986. His son, James P. Stevens, Jr., joined the firm in 1973 and continues with the firm today. After his retirement, he became Of Counsel for his law firm until his death. He was a past president of the Horry County Bar Association, a member of the S.C. Bar Assn., S.C. Trial Lawyers Assn., American Trial Lawyers Assn and American Bar Assn. He practiced law before all South Carolina State and Federal Courts, the South Carolina Supreme Court and the 4thCircuit Court of Appeals and became a noted and distinguished trial attorney.
He served as Chairman of numerous Senate committees including the Judicial Reform Committee which structured the present court system in South Carolina and the Tourism and Trade Committee. He became the 4thhighest ranking senator in seniority in the South Carolina Senate and was instrumental in improving life in Horry County including elevating Coastal Carolina University from a 2 year junior college to a 4 year university, helping create and fund Horry-Georgetown Technical College, helping develop and improve the highway system in Horry County.
He touched many lives in Horry County and South Carolina. His friend and desk mate, the Honorable Walter J. Bristow, Jr. described him best: He was a great family man, he loved his state and he was one of the hardest working senators we had in the state of South Carolina. South Carolina is going to miss him. He was a great man.
The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night at GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, CONWAY CHAPEL at 606-610 Beaty St. in Conway, S.C.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Loris First United Methodist Church, 3507 Broad St., Loris, S.C.

KERSEY, Priscilla
HINESVILLE, GA. - Priscilla Ann (McSwain) Kersey, 63, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, Ga.
She was born in Shelby, N.C., but was raised in Charleston, S.C.; has lived around the world and resided in Hinesville, Ga., for the last 13 years. She was a homemaker and equestrian teacher. She was preceded in death by her parents Ruby and James McSwain.
Survivors include, husband of nearly 44 years, LTC (Ret.) Robert M. Kersey; son, Robert M. Kersey, Jr., of Charleston, S.C., and fiancée Connie Singletary of Hinesville; daughter and son-in-law Rebecca M. and Fredrick Peraza of Oconomowoc, Wisc.; three grandchildren, Robert Antonio Peranza, Alexis Ann Peranza, and Caitlyn Joy Anderson. Nieces and nephews from Florida, California, and Colorado, and a sister-in-law, Judy Rogers of California.
Visitation, 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at Carter Funeral Home, 308 W. Oglethorpe Blvd., Hinesville. Open House for refreshments afterward at 631 Demere Street, Hinesville.
Funeral services, 10 a.m., Thursday, at Carter Funeral Home, and 2:30 p.m. at Live Oak Memorial Gardens on S.C. Highway 61 (Ashley River Road) in Charleston, S.C., with Pastor Jimmy Anderson officiating.

ST. GEORGE - Joshua Nathan Canaday, 16, of 591 Old Bell Road died Sunday April 14, 2002 from injuries sustain in auto accident near St. George. Funeral services will be held 3 pm Wednesday in Grover United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Watson and Rev. Wash Belangia officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray cemetery, Grover. Pallbearers will be Randy Goethe, Blaine Fender, Joey Canady, James Bubsy Brickle, Danny Jackson and Allan Ayer. He was a member of Grover United Methodist Church where he served as the Youth Representative to the Administrative Board and was an employee of Mac’s Supply. MCCARTHY, Michael
Michael P. McCarthy, 93, husband of Margaret Herndon McCarthy, died Saturday, April 13, at a local assisted living home. Born in Charleston to the late Patrick and Lula Bowick McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy was a graduate of Charleston High School, he was a plumber for 20 years and was owner and operator of Sandbar Restaurant on Folly Beach from 1959-1968, during which time he was the Magistrate of Folly Beach for 14 years. He also was a member of the Folly Beach Exchange Club. Mr. McCarthy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Herndon McCarthy, a son, Michael Patrick McCarthy, Jr., and wife Elizabeth of Charleston, a daughter, Marlene Hanjes and husband Kenneth of Folly Beach, a sister, Lula Grice of Charleston, also predeceased by four sisters, Helen Mandige, Carmel Ducker, Loretta Bogart, and Ethel Fulton, 12 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Entombment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. GREENE, Barbara
Barbara Luden Greene, 78, of Indialantic, Fla., died March 22, 2002.
Mrs. Green was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Luden of Charleston. She was a housewife and a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and past member of St. Margarets Guild and the Junior League of South Brevard and the BSO South Guild and the Garden Club.
Survivors include, husband, John Greene of Indialantic, Fla., two sons, Alan of Asheville, N.C., and Warren of Hartford, Conn.

BOBO, Marion
UNION - Mrs. Marion Johnson Bobo, age 97, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at 2 a.m., at an assisted living facility in Summerville, S.C. She was the widow of Rev. John Landrum Bobo, who retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Bishopville, S.C., in 1965.
Mrs. Bobo was an active member of the Philippi Baptist Church in Union in growing up and then later in retirement. She was born in Union County on January 15, 1905. Her parents were the late William C. Johnson and Ann Meng Johnson. She attended Greenville Women's College and graduated from Southern Seminary in 1928.
Her daughter and son-in-law survives Mrs. Bobo, Carolyn and Wade Watson, Sr., of Summerville; also surviving are three grandsons, Wade Watson, Jr., of Savannah, Ga., John and Timothy Watson of Columbia; and one great-grandson, Wade Watson, III, of Savannah, Ga.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 18, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery, Roebuck, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Jim Oliver.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Building Fund of Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379.

BOUCHETTE, Marie
ANDREWS - Marie Howard Bouchette, 85, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Winyah Convalescent Center in Georgetown.
Mrs. Bouchette was born in Williamsburg County near Andrews on June 16, 1916, a daughter of the late Johnny James Howard and Ola Howard. She lived in the Warsaw Community of Williamsburg County most of her life. Mrs. Bouchette was the widow of Lee Bouchette.
Surviving are, two sons, Alfred L. Bouchette and Faron Bouchette, both of Andrews; two daughters, Gail B. Heyward and her husband Russell of Sumter and Lee B. Skipper and her husband Mike of Georgetown; a sister, Rossie Sanchez of Summerville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 4 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, April 17, 2002, at the ANDREWS CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME. Officiating will be the Rev. Tom Skipper and the Rev. Clide Glover. Burial will follow in the Elim United Methodist Churchyard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m., Tuesday evening, April 16, 2002.

MSGT Edward Ethan Strom, Jr., USAF (Ret.), 69, of St. Petersburg, Florida, formerly of Moncks Corner and husband of Rhonda Ann West Strom died Sunday morning in Fairfield County, S.C. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 5 o'clock in James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial will be private. Born on December 3, 1932 in Camden, New Jersey, a son of the late Edward Ethan Strom, Sr. and Ella Mae Shephard Strom. He attended schools in New Jersey. He was a member of the Ladson VFW Post 3433, Goose Creek American Legion Post #166 and Bear Creek Fishing Club in Summerville. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He was a retired Insurance Agent with the Thomas Daniels Nationwide Insurance Company.
