Woodrow W. Horne Sr.
World War II veteran

Woodrow Wilson Horne, Sr., 84, of 206 Bennett St., husband of Dora Lee Wages Horne, died at his residence Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, after an extended illness. Mr. Horne was born in Kelton on Sept. 17, 1918, a son of the late Franklin Hoss Horne and Nannie Vanderford Horne. He was a member of the Union Church of Christ. Mr. Horne was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from United Merchants, Union Plant and Buffalo Plant.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Judy Welch of Winder, Ga., Ginger Gault and Debbie Belk, both of Union; a son, Woodrow Wilson Horne Jr. of Union; four sisters, Pearl Thompson and Margaret Knox, both of Jonesville, Sara Rogers and Juanita Reynolds, both of Union; three brothers, Robert Horne and Lewis Horne, both of Union and Franklin D. Horne of Charleston; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Ben McLaughlin. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery with military rites. Active pallbearers will be Dean Brown, James (Jack) Brown, Sammy White, Steve Horne, John Wages and Paul Thompson.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 206 Bennett St. Memorials may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla. 33136. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jean D. Schenck
Union resident

Jean D. Schenck of Union, widow of Henry A. Schenck, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was the mother of Albert C. Schenck and the last surviving member of seven brothers and sisters. Services will be held in Buffalo, N.Y. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Veta A. Hughes Veteran
Union nurse

SPARTANBURG - Miss Veta A. Hughes, 102, a former resident of Union County, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Skylyn Place. She was the daughter of the late John Giles and Martha Orr Hughes who lived in the family home on land given by a grant from the King of England.

She was the last surviving member of 10 children. After graduation from Jonesville High School, she attended the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in their second graduating class. She started her employment with Wallace Thompson Hospital in Union as a registered nurse and later became operating room supervisor. After 62 years of faithful service, she retired at the age of 86. She actually lived on hospital premises until she was 72 years of age and was on call 24 hours a day.

Trustees dedicated and named the hospital's new surgical suite in her honor. Miss Hughes was loved and admired by many, and she devoted her entire life to caring for and giving to others. A member of Grace United Methodist Church of Union, she was an active member of the Johnnie Sanders Circle and the Culp Wagnon Sunday School Class. She was also a volunteer for the American Red Cross, officer of the Union Nurse's Club, member of the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and the State Association of Registered Nurses.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mazie Hughes of Spartanburg and Willene Hughes of Clinton; three nieces, Caroline Baker of Sea island, Ga., Ethel Bennett of Spartanburg and Judy Raines of Duncan; and five nephews, Robert Chapman of Spartanburg, David Hughes of Roebuck, Joe Dean Hughes of Cowpens, Russell Hughes of Saluda, and Walter Hughes of Clinton.

She also had numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews; and special friends, Elwood and Barbara Eason, and Ronnie Eaves, of Union. During the last few years as Miss Hughes health began to fail, a special member of the family, Hilda Chapman, lovingly attended to her care and needs.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Hilda, as well as Miss Hughes caretakers, Daniel Davis, Carletta Glenn, Deborah Hicks, Edith Leslie, Gladys Poole, Kindall Riddle, Sandra Riddle, Rebecca Stacey and Delma Williams, and also the staff and administration of Skylyn Place. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Byrd officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Chapman Jr., Chuck Hatchette, Darryl Holland, Walter Hughes III, Whit Kennedy Jr., Whitner Kennedy III, Jason Martin and Walter Oates Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Epworth Children's Home, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, S.C. 29250; or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C., 29302.

The family is at the home of Robert and Hilda Chapman, 515 Bennett Dairy Road, Spartanburg. Floyd's North Church Street Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Henry Bauknight Jr.
Union resident

Henry Bauknight Jr., 50, of 405 Webber Lake Road, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary.

Jerusha Conard Palmer
Retired from Monarch Mill

Jerusha Conard Palmer, 80, of 303 South 6th St., Lockhart, died at her residence Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at 5:35 p.m. after a brief illness. Ms. Palmer was born in Lockhart on April 22, 1923, a daughter of the late John T. Conard Sr. and Virgie Black Conard. She was a Baptist. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Milliken & Co.-Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn (Pug) Palmer of the home; a sister, Irene (Tug) Conard of Union; a special friend, Peggy S. Horne of Lockhart, and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lockhart Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill.

Active pallbearers will be Bobby Lee, Tommy Conard, Gerone Brooks, Mack Rash, Jerry Gibson and Wayne Porter. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.

The family is at the home, 303 South 6th Street in Lockhart. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 190, Lockhart, S.C. 29364 or to Hospice Care of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mary Ellen Trammell
Union County native

Mary Ellen Trammell, 78, of 669 Sardis Road, widow of Frank Trammell, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at 7:30 pm. in Oakmont Nursing Home after several years of declining health. Mrs. Trammell was born in Union on May 10, 1925, a daughter of the late Ross and Opal Hunsinger Boulware. She was a member of Sardis United Methodist where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Melinda Sorrow of Union; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ned Trammell, Jerry and Vickie Trammell, all of Union and Rickey and Loretta Trammell of Cross Keys; a sister-in-law, Sadie Boulware of Union; a son-in-law, Wilmer (Crip) Lawson of Pauline; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Trammell was predeceased by a daughter, Annie Laura Lawson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Angella Price. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Grandsons will be active pallbearers. Members of the Ladies Sunday School Class are asked to sit in a group. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 669 Sardis Road. Memorials may be made to Sardis United Methodist Church, 964 Sardis Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Wendy D. Johnson
Employee of Blue Cross/Blue Shield

COLUMBIA Wendy Darlene Johnson, 34, of 5 Long Glenn Court, Columbia, died at her residence Saturday, Sept. 9, 2003. She was born in Flint, Mich., on Jan. 26, 1969, a daughter of Dr. Nathan Johnson Jr. and Shirley A. Johnson. She was a member of Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Church and an employee of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Columbia. She attended Francis Marion College, Spartanburg Technical College and was a graduate of Union High School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are two daughters, Jasmine C. Good and Kristen S. Good, both of Columbia; two brothers, Elgie C. Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Darren D. Johnson of Spartanburg; and two sisters, Vonda D. Gallman of Santuc and Heather M. Johnson of Florence.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. today at Thomas Chapel A.M. E. Church in Santuc by Rev. Wilson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Friday from noon until 7 p.m. at the Union Community Funeral Home. The family is at 305 Duncan Ave., Buffalo. The Union Community Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Jerusha Conard Palmer
Retired from Monarch Mill

Jerusha Conard Palmer, 80, of 303 South 6th St., Lockhart, died at her residence Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003 at 5:35 p.m. after a brief illness. Ms. Palmer was born in Lockhart on April 22, 1923, a daughter of the late John T. Conard Sr. and Virgie Black Conard. She was a Baptist. Henry (Junior) Bauknight Jr.
Former New York City employee

Henry (Junior) Bauknight Jr., 50, of 405 Webber Lake Road, died Sept. 11, 2003, in the Wallace Thomson Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Union County on July 12, 1953, a son of Yvonne Lindsay Glenn and the late Henry Bauknight Sr. He attended the New York Public School System and went to D. Wit Clinton High School. He worked for the New York City Department of Sanitation and relocated back to Union after his health declined. He was a member of St. Luke AME Church in Manhattan, N. Y.

Surviving in addition to his mother are: a daughter, Kashori McNeil of Bronx, NY., a son, Tyrone H. Bauknight III of Bronx, NY; a brother, Raymond Littlejohn of Union; his step-mother, Lula Bauknight of Jonesville; two step-fathers, Jesse Littlejohn of Bronx, NY and S. T. Glenn of Union; a step-sister, Barbara H. Jeter of Union; three step-brothers, S. T. (Mary) Glenn of Spartanburg; Herbert (Anita) Glenn of Atlanta; Dennis (Gloria) Glenn of Florence; one grandchild, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Carolina Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. James Ponder officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Rowell Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service.

Viewing and visitation will be today until 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home of his mother and step-father, Yvonne L. Glenn and S. T Glenn, 403 Webber Lake Road. The Carolina mortuary has charge of the arrangements.
