Mr. Richard Floyd Vaughan Sr., 62, of 747 Brown's Creek Church Road, died at his home Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at 3:15 a.m. after a brief illness. Mr. Vaughan was born in Union on July 31, 1941, a son of Christopher C. (C.C.) Vaughan and Bertie Aileen Vaughan Vaughan of Union. He was a member of the Brown's Creek Baptist Church and was a retired cabinetmaker.
Surviving in addition to his parents are two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Tommy Adams of Union, Melissa and Jerome McBride of Spartanburg; three sisters, Shirley Bobo, Joyce Adams and Rita Sanders, all of Union; three brothers, Gerald Vaughan, Larry Vaughan and Chris Vaughan, all of Union; five grandchildren, Heath and Hanna Adams, Kacie Vaughan, Derrian and Hunter Vaughan.
Mr. Vaughan was predeceased by a son, Ricky Vaughan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown's Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Joe Blalock. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Larry Belue, Thomas Bobo, Twig Adams, Shorty Howell, Timmy Dean Sanders and Petey Ivey. Mr. Vaughan's friends at Fairview Diner are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. and will be placed in church at 10 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Adams, 537 Old Pump Station Road. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, Suite 300, 120 Heywood Ave., Spartanburg, S. C. 29302. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Lois H. Wright
BUFFALO Mrs. Lois Victoria Haney Wright, 90, of 217 Gin Circle, Buffalo, widow of Edgar T. (Bud) Wright, died at her home Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 at 9:10 p.m. after a brief illness. Mrs. Wright was born in Haywood Co. N.C. on March 10, 1913, a daughter of the late Ben and Maggie Swayngim Haney.
She was a member of the Buffalo United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wright was formerly employed with United Merchants, Buffalo Plant, and was retired from Newberry Mills. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Paul Robinson, Claudette and Danny Brewington and Joyce and Buddy Newton, all of Buffalo; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Teresa Wright of Jonesville, Ronald and Vanessa Wright, Brent and Jean Wright, all of Union; a special friend, Karen Lawson, of Buffalo; a daughter-in-law, Hazel Wright of Buffalo; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Wright was predeceased by a son, Jerry (Buddy Boy) Wright and two grandchildren, Jeff Wright and Teresa Newton. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Phillip Chandler and the Rev. Bobby Crocker. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Dale Robinson, Keith Wright, Bryan Robinson, Brett Robinson, Joey Newton, Trey Newton and Cody Newton. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 until 8 p.m. The family is at the home, 217 Gin Circle, Buffalo. Memorials may be made to Hospice of S. C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Willis F. Kingsmore
ROCK HILL Mr. Willis Franklin Kingsmore, 82, husband of Louise West Kingsmore, of 1969-A Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, died Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Piedmont Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Mr. Kingsmore was born in Union, July 3, 1921, a son of the late James M. and Vera Gregory Kingsmore. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Ottaray Plant, and was a graduate of Union High School. Mr. Kingsmore was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Union Elks Lodge #1321. He was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Suzy and Audie Braddy of Rock Hill; three sisters, Mrs. R. M. (Lillie) Parks of Union; Mrs. Sam (Katherine) Spence of Augusta, Ga., and Mrs. Chandler (Audrey) Harmon of Georgetown. Graveside services with military rites will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Benny Green.
Active pallbearers will be: Stanley Kingsmore, James Parks, Karman Kingsmore, Lynn O'Shields and Henry G. (Chip) Alexander Jr. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8. Memorials may be made to Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1431 Lockhart Highway, Union, S. C., 29379. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Leonard D. Kirsch
JONESVILLE Mr. Leonard Daniel Kirsch, 78, husband of Linda McMillan Kirsch of 607 Gaffney Highway, Jonesville, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. Kirsch was born in Newton, Mass. on September 19, 1924, a son of the late Raymond and Hazel Barkhouse Kirsch. He attended Jonesville United Methodist Church.
Mr. Kirsch was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was formerly employed with Marty Motor Corp. of Mt. Kisco, N. Y. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Lenora Bettcher of Brewster, N. Y. and Lisa Posso of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Kevin Kirsch of Bethel, Conn. and Eric Kirsch of Wappingers Falls, N. Y.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in New York. The S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Gary H. Holcomb
CLINTON Gary H. Holcomb, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in the Lexington Medical Center. He was born in Union, a son of the late Rufus T. and Mary Betenbaugh Holcomb.
Mr. Holcomb was a co-owner of Sunshine Cleaners and Laundry, a member and former deacon and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Clinton; a member of the Lions Club and Hejaz Shrine Temple and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Howard Holcomb; two sons, Brent H. Holcomb of Columbia and Barry M. Holcomb of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, R.T. Holcomb of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Wolfe of Memphis, Tenn. and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Clinton with burial in the Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends before the service from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m at the church. Gray Funeral Home of Clinton has charge of arrangements.
Dr. Allen Jeter
Allen Parrott Jeter, M.D., 77, of 3435 Santuc-Carlisle Highway, Carlisle, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003. Dr. Jeter was born March 5, 1926, in Bishopville, the son of Ireneus Parham and Florence Parrott Jeter. He attended Columbia, Charleston and Rock Hill schools, graduating from Rock Hill High School in 1944.
He entered Clemson College but left to volunteer to serve his country in World War II. He was a soldier in the 309th Infantry from July 1944 to October 1945 serving in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central European campaigns. He received military awards for service in the battles of the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was awarded three bronze battle stars. Upon honorable discharge from the Army in 1945, he returned to Clemson to complete his education.
After graduation, he worked for the U.S. Public Health Service serving in Miami, Fla., Charleston W.Va. and Washington, D.C. He subsequently returned to South Carolina and worked with Lederle Laboratories for seven years as a pharmaceutical representative. He entered the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston in 1956, graduating in December 1959.
He interned at the Columbia Hospital of Richland County from 1959-1960. He was board certified in family medicine and enjoyed practicing family medicine in Winnsboro until 1984. He was a devoted husband and father. An avid sailor, he enjoyed the challenge of the high seas and peacefulness of the quiet coves.
He was a commodore of the Seven Seas Cruising Association and of the Ocean Cruising Club. He was committed to the Jeter Family, spending countless hours researching family genealogy and insuring the perpetuation of the Jeter Cemetery. His vision to establish the Jeter Chapel, located adjacent to the Jeter Cemetery, became a reality upon its completion in 1994. He was a member of Cane Creek Presbyterian Church, Union Rotary Club and Sons of the American Revolution.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Kurtz Jeter, and daughter, Elizabeth Suzanne Jeter of the residence; daughter, Elizabeth Allene and son-in-law, Chip Sims of Greenville, daughter, Susan Rogers and son-in-law, Ken Amick of Batesburg, son, George M.R. Jeter of Blythewood and nephew, Jack Hamilton Jeter and wife Susan, of Yorktown, Va.; grandchildren, Shane McFadden and Amy Holcombe, also survive him.
His parents and a brother, Jack Hamilton Jeter, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at the Jeter Cemetery Chapel conducted by the Rev. Larry Crocker with military rites. Burial was in the Jeter Cemetery. Active pallbearers were James Easley, Charles Jeter, Harry Jeter, Gus Jeter, William Kurtz, Richard Kurtz and Gerald Kurtz.
The family received friends and family Sunday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Jeter Cemetery Fund, c/o Mrs. William Jeter, 115 Park Drive, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Sarah Y. Jeter
Sarah Y. Jeter of White Oak Manor Nursing Home in Spartanburg died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003. The family is at 285 Hickory Ridge Road, Jonesville. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Union Community Funeral Home.
Claude T. Hyder
Claude Thomas Hyder, 77, husband of Mabel Fowler Hyder of 142 Lake Drive, Union, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, in the Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center in Columbia. Mr. Hyder was born in Union on Sept. 15, 1926, a son of the late Wilks Edward and Lillian Greene Hyder, He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Hyder was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a graduate of Union High School and Newberry College and was retired from the U.S. Forest Service.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff Thomas Hyder and Stacey Hyder of Union; four sisters, Minnie Lou Barnett, Lorena Gregory, Vivian Jolly and Cornelia Owings, all of Union; and three brothers, Maurice Hyder, W.E. Hyder and Donald Hyder, all of Union. Mr. Hyder was predeceased by a sister and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joe Wilson Smith and the Rev. Forest Davis. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Don Hyder, Chad Hooper, Kenny Jennings, Jerry Plemmons, Jimmy Tesner and Brian Fowler. Members of the Terry Lawing's Sunday School Class and Don Fowler and Joe Pitt are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his son, Jeff T. Hyder, 146 Lake Drive. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 405 E. Main Street, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
