HAZELTON, Richard

SMITH, Joshua
Joshua Daniel Smith, a resident of Mount Pleasant and a retried business executive, died Friday. A long time resident of New Orleans, he visited Charleston numerous times before moving to Mount Pleasant in 1999.
Born in Smith County, Mississippi, his parents were Ney Smith and Bonnie-Mae Dennis Smith. In 1934, he entered Millsaps College, graduating at the top of his class three years later, with a BS Degree in Chemistry. He received a Masters Degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1940, and was awarded an executive MBA by Louisiana State University in 1963.
Commissioned an Officer in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1940, he served during World War II, remaining in the Reserves until 1961, when he retired as a Lt. Colonel with the 377th Transportation Division. Trained as a pilot before the war, his active duty during the war was with the Chemical Warfare Service.
His civilian career was with International Lubricants Corporation, a subsidiary of Shell Oil Company. Starting in New Orleans in 1941, he resumed his civilian activities in 1946, retiring in 1976. He was awarded numerous patents for his work in creating improved lubricants, for both civilian and military applications. At the time of his retirement, he was Chief Chemist and Director of Research for the company.
He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the National Lubricating Grease Institute, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists. In addition, he qualified as a registered Chemical Engineer in Louisiana.
Active in civic activities in New Orleans, he served on the Boards of the Lake Vista Property Owners Association and the Lake Vista Holiday Club. An amateur naturalist with his roots in rural Mississippi, he took great pride in his gardens, both in Mount Pleasant and in New Orleans. He also maintained an interest in academic activity all his life, concentrating on European and Early American History.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Thais Wild Smith; two children, Cynthia Smith Hernandez of Mount Pleasant, and Eric Ney Smith, a resident of New Orleans; four grandchildren, Jose Daniel, Andres, and Maria-Elisa Hernandez, all of Mount Pleasant, and Hillary Smith-Ripley of New York. At the time of his death, he had one great-grandchild, Heather Ripley, also of New York.
DEATON, Joshua
Joshua Mark Deaton, 19, of James Island, a self employed carpenter, died Friday, August 30, 2002 at a local hospital. Joshua was born on January 3, 1983 in Charleston, a son of John J. and Betty Shifflett Deaton. He was an active member of the James Island Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, a car enthusiast, loved football and spending time with his family. Joshua was a quiet, humble, friendly and likeable young man who made friends easily. He will be sadly missed by his parents of James Island; a sister, Theresa M. Deaton of Ala.; 4 brothers, John A. Deaton of Calif., and Tony L. Deaton, Jeffery L. Deaton, and Kevin C. Deaton, all of Charleston, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The relatives and friends of Joshua M. Mr. Fisk was born on March 29, 1939 in Walterboro, S.C., the son of the late Clyde J. Fisk and Dorothy Sauls Fisk. He was retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Shop # 51 and was the owner of Fisk Fire Protection Service for over 30 years. He served on the U.S. Navy and was a member of First Baptist Church of Johns Island.
Surviving are his wife, 1 son, Dwayne A. Fisk, and 1 daughter, Kathryn L. Overton, all from Johns Island; 1 brother, William Fisk of Charleston; and grandsons, Taylor, Daniel, and James Overton of Johns Island, S.C.

Mrs. Henderson was born September 14, 1905 in Awendaw, a daughter of Gamewell Mouzon Brunson and Ida Julia Jackson Brunson. Mrs. Henderson was a buyer for Kerrison's Department Store in the 1920's and 30's. She was a charter life member of Milcah Temple No. 77, Daughters of the Nile, and a past member of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member of the Ehrhardt Southern Methodist Church, Ehrhardt, a past member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, and a past member of St. James United Methodist Church, Charleston, S.C.
She is survived by one son, Robert L. Henderson and his wife Carol of Folly Beach, S.C.; one daughter, Phyllis H. LaMacchia of Huger, S.C.; four grandchildren, Robert Lansing (Lance) Henderson II of Ravenel, S.C., Lisa Denise Henderson of Folly Beach, S.C., Katherine Armstrong Garrett and her husband Steve of Pauline, S.C; David Meakin Armstrong of New York; two great-grandsons, Jordan Charles Garrett and Caleb Henderson Garrett.

LEFEMINE, Vito
Vito Nicholus Lefemine, 76, widow of Barbara (Redfield) Lefemine, formerly of Plainville, Conn. and Edisto Island, S.C., died on Monday, August 26, 2002 in Auburn, Mass. Born in Plainville, Conn. on August 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph and Carmella (Giantelli) Lefemine.
Mr. Lefemine, a U.S. Army Corp veteran of W.W. II, participated in the Berlin Airlift and was an Aerospace Engineer from Grumman until his retirement in 1990. Vito was a member of the Berlin Airlift Association and the Lions Club.
Mr. Lefemine is survived by his son Steven Lefemine of Columbia, S.C.; his daughter Dawn Marie and son-in-law Geoffrey Lawrence Dean of East Woodstock, Conn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Judith and Carmen Raffanello of Bristol; several nieces and nephews: John Raffanelle, Tom Raffanello, Mark Rafanello, Danny Raffanello, Maura Utley and Patrick Lefemine.

Mrs. Somchit Bryant, 48, of 2252 Easton Avenue, Charleston Heights, SC, died Thursday, August 29, 2002 at her home. WALTERBORO: Grace Ackerman Carter McQuage, 86, widow of William Edward Carter and James Angus McQuage, died Thursday at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Mrs. McQuage was born Oct. 21, 1915, in Cottageville, a daughter of the late Joseph Oliver Ackerman and Isabelle Saunders Ackerman. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. The Essie Loper Circle and The Wesley Bible Class. She was a member of the Pink Star Garden Club, a volunteer at The Colleton Medical Center for 15 years and a former Girl Scout Leader. She was Valedictorian of Cottageville High School, class of 1932. She was a retired Bookkeeper for Prentiss Wholesale.
Surviving are: three daughters, Carolyn C. Powers, Nancy C. Spell and Nancy M. Baggett all of Walterboro and a son, Neil McQuage of Kent, Washington. Eight grandchildren and twelve great- grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Debbie Powers.
