ST. GEORGE - Howard Cooper Johnston, Sr., 87, of 116 West Raysor Street died at his residence Thursday August 29, 2002. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the St. George United Methodist Church with Dr. Wash Belangia officiating. Burial will follow in the St. George cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert J. Merritt, Joe D. Johnston, Robert E. Johnston, Dr. John B. Johnston, Gene W. Dukes, and James F. Cooner. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Carlisle Utsey Men’s Bible Class and of St. George Business Men’s Club. Mr. Johnston was born January 29, 1915 in St. George a son of the late Dr. John Blassingame Johnston and Alma Ethel McCoy Johnston. He was a graduate of St. George High School and attended Wofford College and was a retired Sales Associate for Massingill Drug Company. A former Mayor of the Town of St. George he was very instrumental in South Carolina Politics. He was an active member of St. George United Methodist Church where he belonged to the Carlisle Utsey Men’s Bible Class. He was a former trustee of Indian Field United Methodist Campground and was a charter member and past president of St. George Business Men’s Club. He was pre-deceased by brothers, Addison McCoy Johnston, Dr. Aquilla Richard Johnston, and John B. Johnston, Jr. Surviving; his wife, Claudine Mustard Johnston, St. George, a son and daughter in law, Howard Cooper and Carol Johnston, Jr., Greensboro, NC, a daughter and son in law, Barbara and Dr. Gerald Fletcher, of Jacksonville Beach, FL., 2 grand-daughters, Heather Johnston Ratliff, Atlanta, GA, Meredith Janelle Johnston, Greensboro, NC, 2 sisters, Mrs. James (Olive) Merritt, Columbia and Mrs. Ethel J. FINLEY, Cheryl
Mrs. Cheryl Beach Finley, formerly of Varnville, S.C., died Friday afternoon at the Medical College of GA in Augusta, GA after an extended illness.

HOPGOOD, SR., Adolph
Adolph Hopgood, Sr., 83, of Moncks Corner, a retired truck driver with Braswell Freight, died Wednesday at a Charleston hospital.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, at RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner. Burial will be private.
Mr. Hopgood was born April 14, 1919, in Tyronza, Ark., a son of Elmo Hopgood and Lonnie Shankles Hopgood. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and a member of the American Legion Post. He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Madeline Ivy Hopgood of Moncks Corner; son, Adolph Hopgood, Jr., of Moncks Corner; two daughters, Patricia Elaine Bradley and Peggy Diane Langston, both of Moncks Corner; one grandson; two granddaughters.

MCGEE, George
George E. "Ed" McGee, 50, of Charleston, S.C., formerly of Parkersburg, W.Va., died unexpectedly, October 11, 2002, in Charleston. He was born, February 21, 1952, at Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of Gertrude Maston McGee Cronin of Waverly, W.Va., and the late Hamie Alfred McGee. He was a 1970 graduate of St. Mary's High School and attended Marshall University. He was a field engineer by trade having worked plant jobsites all over the valley as well as Pittsburgh, Detroit, and South Carolina. He was a respected musician throughout the valley playing both keyboard and guitar and had recently released a CD in the greater Charleston area. He was active in the arts and the cause of children and served various community organization. He was a past president of the McKinley PTA, past president of the Wood County Council of PTA's, past candidate for the Wood County Board of Education, past treasurer of the YMCA Sharks swim team, worked diligently on the original "Save the Smoot Theatre" campaign, and served as set builder for the Parkersburg Civic Ballet Company.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Erica "Nikki" McGee-Greenberg and her husband, Adam of Seattle, Wash., Katie Laine Hall and her husband John of Bozeman, Mont., one granddaughter, Adrienne Laine Hall of Bozeman, Mont., three sisters, Mrs. Sherry Seppesy of Greensboro, N.C., Tracy Bills of Waverly, W.Va., and Mrs. Janice Malone of Waverly, W.Va., two brothers, Frank McGee of Florida, and Mike Cronin of Waverly, W.Va., step-father, Robert Cronin of Waverly, W.Va., and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be held Sunday, October 20, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the INGRAM FUNERAL HOME, St. Mary's W.VA. Calling hours from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, and from 12 noon to 2 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home.
SWEZEY, Leon
SUMMERTON - Leon G. Swezey, 78, of 1075 Hickory Drive, Summerton, SC died at a Charleston area hospital Wednesday, October 16, 2002 . Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in St. George, S.C. The family will receive family and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service. Dennis Card will be officiating.
Mr. Swezey was born March 27, 1924 in Blue Point, Long Island, NY a son of the late John Henry Swezey and Elsie Mabel Fish Swezey. He was a retired line foreman for the Long Island Lighting Company and an Army veteran of WW II where he received the Bronze Star for action in the Battle of the Bulge.
A member and former Chief of the Blue Point Fire Department and member of the IBEW union. Surviving: his wife, Shirley Ritchie Swezey, Summerton, SC, 2 sons, Donald Warren Swezey, Summerton, SC and Edward Robert Swezey, Englewood, FL, 2 daughters, Karen Lee Siemen, Las Vegas, Nevada, Barbara Shirley Kilthau, Blue Point, NY. A sister, Madeline Huber, Crisfield, Maryland, 14 grands and 10 great-grands.

Judith Calhoun Weathers, 62, of Dennis Boulevard, Moncks Corner, SC, a retired secretary with the Berkeley County Department of Education, died Thursday at her residence.
The funeral will be at 2:00 PM Monday afternoon, October 21, 2002, in Cedar Creek Baptist Church, Nichols, SC. Mrs. Weathers was born February 3, 1940, in Green Sea, SC, a daughter of Lamar Weavil and Inez Williamson Weavil. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner. A daughter, Rhonda Melissa Calhoun and a sister, Linda Richardson preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Allison C. Dennis of Moncks Corner and Tammy Calhoun of Pinopolis; one son, Thurman S. "Buddy" Calhoun, III of Moncks Corner; one sister, Brenda Howery of Clearwater, FL; and four grandchildren.
