VILLEPONTEAUX, Ruth
Ruth Laurey Villeponteaux, 82, of Charleston died Wednesday, October 16that a local hospital. Born in Charleston to the late James Frances and Ida Elizabeth Bowick Laurey. She was married
to the late James M. Villeponteaux. Mrs. Villeponteaux was a graduate of Bishop England High School and a member of Nativity Catholic Church. She is survived by her son, Billy Villeponteaux and his wife Rachel of Charleston, three daughters, Donna Villeponteaux and her husband David Hopkins of Charleston, Joanne Johnston and her husband Jim of Charleston, and Marilu Villeponteaux of Charleston, a brother, Jimmy Laurey and his wife Retta of Folly Beach. Also survived by nine grandchildren, Tommy Balliet, Jamie Balliet, Jason Balliet, Jimmy Villeponteaux, Audrey Hopkins, David Hopkins, Austin Johnston, Casey Johnston, Taylor Searcy and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 6-8PM Friday, October 18that McALISTER-SMITH DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, with a Christian Vigil Services beginning at 7:30PM. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 11AM Saturday, October 19that Our Lady of Good Counsel located on Folly Beach. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. ANDERSON, Lydia
GEORGETOWN - Lydia Elizabeth Jimmie Mercer Anderson, 90, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Georgetown on December 30, 1911, a daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Mercer and Sarah Catherine Porter Mercer. She graduated from Andrews High School and attended Georgetown Business School. Mrs. Anderson retired as a sales clerk from Fogel’s Department Store. She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are: a daughter, Brenda Anderson Pope and her husband Tommy of Georgetown; a sister, Kathryn Mercer Coutu and her husband Danny of Andrews; two grandchildren, Anthony Tony Holland Pope of Summerville and Sara Lynn Pope Greer and her husband Sam of Rock Hill; two great-grandchildren, John Anthony Pope of Summerville and Emily Ruth Greer of Rock Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by: her husband, Leslie Clifton Anderson; and four brothers, John Preston Mercer, Christopher C. Mercer, Herbert Edward Mercer, and Thomas Durant Mercer.
Funeral services will be Friday morning, October 18, 2002, at eleven o’clock at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Officiating will be The Rev. Scott Johnson and The Rev. Dennis J. Mardis. Burial will follow in the Churchyard under the direction of the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME.

Ruth Phillips Dyches, 67, of Lantern Street, Charleston, S.C., a retired secretary for the delivery department of Sears, died Thursday in a Charleston hospital.

Mrs. Dyches was born Dec. 30, 1934, in McBeth, S.C., a daughter of Rannie Adrain Phillips and Bessie Mills Phillips. She is a member of the Sycamore Baptist Church and the seniors bingo group.
Surviving are, her husband, Julian "Mack" Dyches; a daughter, Cindy D. Owen of Charleston; a son, Darwin Dyches of Williston; a foster daughter, Patty Bryant of Mt. WALTERBORO - Mr. Lance Benjamin Carter, Sr., 39, of 219 South Memorial Avenue, died Wednesday at Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Doctor's Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Hans Wunch and Rev. Wayne Lucas officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, directed by the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. Carter was born in Iowa City, Iowa and was a son of Dr. Marvin H. Carter and Patricia Mae Wiltse Carter. He was a former sales representative with Gene Wilson Associates and was a Baptist. He attended USC Salkehatchie Campus in Allendale for 2 years and was a member of the South Carolina Hemophilia Association.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Walterboro and his father of Ruffin are his stepmother, Phyllis Carter of Ruffin; a daughter, Ashley Carter of Charleston; a son, Lance Benjamin Carter, Jr. of Walterboro; stepdaughters, Donna Jacobs and Regina Bell, both of Orangeburg, and Angela Bell of Columbia; two sisters, Debbie Cox of Chapin and Lana Zehr of Boiling Springs; brothers, Blaine Carter of Columbia, Garrett Carter of Walterboro, and Bart Carter of Charleston. He was predeceased by a son, Brandon Lance Carter.

Captain William Kendall Washburne, USN (Ret.), born December 7, 1931, in Kingston, Iowa, passed away August 28, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Linda, three sons, Stephen, Phillip, and Barrett, a daughter, Paige and three grandchildren.

EPPES, Frank
Frank Eppes, the youngest son of James Frank Eppes and Vena Adams Epps, passed away early Thursday morning in Greenville, S.C. Judge Eppes was born on November 28, 1922.
He was a life-long member of the Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. He was President of the Student Body at Parker High School in 1940. He postponed his graduation until 1941, however, in order to be on the first Parker football team to beat Greenville High. (He did not play in the game.) He attended the University of South Carolina before the war and played freshman football. He was drafted in 1943 and entered the United States Army Air Force where he served in England throughout W.W.II and after the war in Switzerland. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, 1950. While at the University of South Carolina, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, Blue Key, and the Euphradian Literary Society. In 1949, while still in college, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served there until 1962. He was a member of the Citadel Board of Visitors for ten years and he was also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Medical University of South Carolina for ten years. He was chairman of the South Carolina House Committee on Municipal, Military and Public Affairs. In 1962 he was elected resident judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit which includes Greenville and Pickens counties. He served in that position from 1962 until 1985 holding court and seeing his many friends. During that period he served two terms as President of the South Carolina Trail Judges Association. In 1985 he retired in order to run for governor. Thereafter he returned to the service of the State. From 1985 until 2000 he continued to work throughout the State as a circuit judge sitting by special designation. For over a decade, he was an active jockey and crowd-pleaser at the Aiken Triple Crown Harness Races in Aiken, S.C. After his retirement, horses, family and friends continued to keep him busy.
Judge Eppes is survived by his wife, Frankie; his son, Frank; his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Betsy) and Steve Thackston; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Sarah; his daughter Martha Cary (Missy); his sister and brother-in-law, Martha Cary and Crom Lennon; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Jenks; his sister, Mary Ann; seven grandchildren; four sisters-in-law and a dozen nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 741 Cleveland Street, Greenville, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 30. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 1, at 2 p.m. at the Greenville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
