ADKINS, Dexter
WALTERBORO - Mr. Dexter Wellman Adkins, 80, of 88 Glen Street, Walterboro, died Wednesday at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, at the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Murray cemetery near Grover.
Mr. Adkins was born in Wayne, W.Va., a son of the late Boyd Adkins and Lyda Wellman Adkins. He was retired from the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Charleston and was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Fannie Crenshaw Adkins, a son, Bobby Adkins of Stockbridge, Ga., daughters, Dale A. Headden of Walterboro, Donna A. Patton of Stockbridge, Ga., and Debbie A. White of Heartwell, Ga., a brother, H.B. Adkins of Charleston, W.Va., a sister, Lois Hale of Wayne, W.Va., ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

PROCTOR, Hilda
GREEN POND - Hilda Hickman Wood Proctor, 87, retired owner and manager of Wood's Store at Green Pond and also a licensed beautician, died Wednesday at Oakwood Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Green Pond Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Jim Williams. Interment will be in the church cemetery, directed by the Fred Parker Funeral Home.
Mrs. Proctor was born September 30, 1914 in Walterboro, a daughter of the late Solomon Elliott Hickman and Pearl Herndon Hickman. She was raised and spent most of her childhood in Wiggins, SC. She was a member of Green Pond Baptist Church, a choir member, and taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a former flower co-coordinator. She was a member of the Colleton County Home for Demonstration Club and coordinator for the fundraising bake sale for Green Pond Fire Department. She was the widow of Berkeley C. Wood and Dick Proctor.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald A. and Bobbie Wood, Richard B. and Patsy Wood, all of Green Pond; brother, Eugene Hickman of Charleston; a sister, Louise H. Snook of Walterboro; two grandchildren, Tammy Herndon and Richard Wood, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Reagan and Ryan Herndon and Brandon Wood, all of Green Pond.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.

SLAUGHTER, William
William Francis (Slug) Slaughter, 72, of Charleston, SC, died peacefully with his family at his side on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at a local hospital.
Mr. Slaughter was born in Spartanburg, SC on March 7, 1930, the son of the late William T. (Dub) Slaughter and the late Frances R. Slaughter. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1952 and was very active in athletics. He served 14 years in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as a Lt. Commander. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Slaughter was a sales representative in the insurance business for many years, predominantly with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was retired and lived in the Canterbury House on Market Street in Charleston. He was affiliated with Ashley River Baptist Church.
Surviving are his sons, William F. Slaughter, Jr. and Stephen Michael Slaughter and also one daughter, Susan E. Simmons. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren.
A memorial service for Mr. Slaughter will be held at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home on Wentworth Street in Charleston on Saturday, August 31, 2002 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 267 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401. The Slaughter family is being served by the CREMATION CENTER OF CHARLESTON.
MOORMANN, Edna
ORANGEBURG - Enda Sharpe Moormann, 90, of 10 Hawthorne Trail, The Methodist Oaks, entered into eternal rest Thursday morning at her residence. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 31, 2002, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church, Ellorree, with Rev. Thorn C. Jones and Rev. L. Ray Anderson, Jr., officiating. Burial, Jerusalem United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Moormann was born in Brook Port, IL, a daughter of the late Sheridan Sharpe and Alice Sharpe. She was a retired co-owner and operator of Warsaw Manufacturing Company of Kingstree and Johnsonville. She and her husband worked in manufacturing in Charleston, Georgetown, Greenville, and Kingstree. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church. Mrs. Moormann was the widow of William John "Bill" Moormann.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Howard (Hank) and Nancy Moormann of Aiken; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Thom (Sue) Jones of West Columbia; sister, Regina Finch of Luka, Mississippi; 4 grandchildren, Rena M. Lewis of Dallas, TX, Amary J. Sox of Columbia, SC, Bill Moormann, II of Charlotte, SC, Kramer Hanshaw of Columbia, SC; 10 great-grandchildren.

John James Karns, Jr., 53, of San Antonio, TX, died June 13, 2002. A memorial service will be held this Friday evening, August 30, 2002 at Parks Funeral Home, Summerville, SC at 6 o'clock.
Mr. Karns was born October 15, 1948 in Kokomo, IN, a son of John James Karns and Wanetta Karns. He was a US Army veteran of Vietnam and a self-employed carpenter.

Mrs. Sailers was born February 19, 1916, in Hilda, S.C., a daughter of Charles S. and Louise Hutto Walker. Mrs. Sailers was a member of Longs Chapel United Methodist Church, Lake Junaluska, N.C. She was retired from the American Tobacco Company and was a member of Heywood County Homemakers Association.
She is survived by a son, Arthur F. "Bones" Brinker of Hanahan, S.C.; two sisters, Susan Hill of Nashville, Tenn., and Alma Holder of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Wendy Brinker, Amy Smith, Allen Brinker and Karen Geils; two great-grandchildren, Charles Smith and A.J. Brinker. Mrs. Sailers was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur F. Brinker.

Mr. Westervelt was born on May 24, 1949, in Charleston, S.C., the son of the late Theodore R. Westervelt, Sr., and Aubrea Way Westervelt. He was retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was a nuclear inspector. He was most recently employed at Metal Trades, Inc., as a machinist.
Surviving are his beloved wife Marvia of Meggett, S.C.; his mother, Aubrea Westervelt of Meggett, S.C.; one daughter, Melissa A. Hough and husband Richard; one son, Trey Westervelt and wife Miranda; one sister, Jan S. Redman of Maryland; one brother, Randy Westervelt of Meggett, S.C. He is also survived by and will always be remembered with love by his beloved grandchildren, Megan, Calli, and Cody Hough, and Talon Westervelt.

Franke and Co. and was most recently with Hughes Lumber Company of Charleston. He was a member and past president of the Arion Society and Member and Past Master of the Landmark Lodge #76.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston, S.C.; his mother of Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Lt. Col John L. Pennell, Jr., and his wife Carrie of Goldsboro, N.C., Charles Edwin Pennell of Florida and Mitchell Roberts Pennell of Goose Creek, S.C.; one daughter, Julie Ann Pennell of Harleyville, S.C.; two brothers, W. Eugene Pennell of Charleston, S.C., and George I. Pennell of Anaheim, Calif.; two grandchildren, Ryan Alexander Pennell and Erin Ashley Pennell.
