Former social worker

SPARTANBURG - Robin Kay Parrish Moore, 40, of 868 Floyd Road Ext., Spartanburg, died Oct. 1, 2002. Mrs. Moore was a native of Union, the daughter of Donald Ray (Bud) Parrish of Glenn Springs and the late Judy Kay Kidd Parrish and was the wife of Danny Ryan Moore. A graduate of Winthrop College, she was a former social worker with the Department of Social Services in Greenville and the Village Partnership in Spartanburg. She was a member of Skylyn United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her father and husband are a daughter, Lindsay Richael Brigman of Cowpens; two step-daughters, Donna Moore Burroughs of Boiling Springs and Anna Moore Steadman of Spartanburg; a sister, Latisha Deal of Roebuck; a brother, Scott Parrish of Orlando, Fla.; and two step-grandchildren. Visitation will be tonight from 5-7 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Memorial services will follow at 7 p.m. at Greenlawn Chapel by the Rev. James B. Carter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Robin P. Moore Memorial Fund, PO Drawer 1530, Spartanburg, SC 29304. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Earmease H. Bailey
Union resident

Earmease Hoover Bailey, 81, wife of Fred R. Bailey of 706 Beatys Bridge Road, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at 5:15 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Carl E. Beck Sr.
World War II veteran

Carl Eugene Beck Sr., 87, husband of Pearl Stoneman Beck of 402 S. Church St., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at his home after an extended illness. Mr. Beck was born in Winston Salem, N. C. on Nov.29, 1915, a son of the late Henry S. Beck Sr. and Josephine Beckel Beck. He was a retired plumbing and heating contractor and owner of Beck's Plumbing for over 30 years.

He was a graduate of the R. J. Reynolds High School in Winston Salem, N.C., and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. Mr. Beck was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union where he served as a deacon and Elder of the church and was named Elder Emeritus. He was a member of the Young Men's Bible Class and had been a Boy Scout leader at the church. Mr. Beck had served as president of the S.C. State Plumbing and Heating Association and was past president of the Union Jaycees. He was also a member of the Table of Wisdom at the Bantam Chef.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Carl Eugene Beck Jr. of Richmond, Va; a sister, Jane B. Matthews of Akron, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Katherine Margaret Beck of Richmond, Va. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Charlie Horne. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Steve Willard, Norris Fowler and Mr. Beck's nephews. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 p.m. Sunday to form the honorary escort: Members of the Young Men's Bible Class of First Presbyterian Church; members of the Bantam Chef Coffee Club and I. M. Buckner, Herbert Johnson and James Dean Stone.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 672, Union, S.C., 29379; or Hospice Care of South Carolina, 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, S.C. 29379 or to a charity of one's choice. The family is at the home, 402 S. Church St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ellen Justice
Woodruff native

Mary Ellen Justice, 54, of 241 Justice Road, died at her home Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at 7:14 p.m. after a brief illness. Miss Justice was born in Woodruff on July 28, 1949, a daughter of Franklin Bennett Justice and Elizabeth Moore Justice of the home. She was of the Pentecostal faith. Miss Justice was a graduate of Union High School.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Jackie J. Richardson of Buffalo; a niece, Jackie and her husband, Shane Kirkland of Columbia; two nephews, Justun and his wife, Kellie Richardson of Union and Jeff and his wife, Melinda Richardson of Buffalo; four great-nieces and five great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. David Toney. Burial will be in the Putman Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tommy Moore, Ronnie Moore, Laddie Henderson, Barry Palmer, Steven Furbursh and Richie Barnes.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 241 Justice Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Vivian B. Vanderford
Lockhart native

LOCKHART Vivian Burns Vanderford, 71, of 4705 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, (Lockhart Community), widow of Daniel V. (Dan) Vanderford, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at 3:57 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Vanderford was born in Lockhart on Sept. 5, 1932, a daughter of the late Monroe Burns and Annie Odom Burns. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and the Beaver Creek Bible Institution and was a member of the Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church and Women Active for Christ.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Iris Vanderford of Spartanburg, Roger and Wanda Vanderford, Logan and Lu Ann Vanderford, of Lockhart; a sister, Lois Burns of Lockhart; a brother, Horace Burns of England; eight grandchildren, Tripp Vanderford, Jaime Farmer, Johnny Lawson, Jessica Vanderford, Danielle Vanderford, Nick Vanderford, Matt Vanderford and Hunter Vanderford; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan Harris, Haley Farmer, Sydnie Vanderford and Gavin Vanderford.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Conyers and the Rev. Bill Vanderford. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Lamb, J. T. Vinson, Rick McCloud, Butch Carter, Wayne Nations and Frank Vanderford. Members of the Women Active for Christ are asked to sit in a group.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Sunday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Dr. Robert M. Wentz and Dr. Gerald D. Fielder. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 4705 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, (Lockhart Community). The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Gladys F. Crocker
Retired from Milliken Research Center

Gladys Farr Crocker, 69, widow of Charles Edward Crocker, of 122 Farr Lane, died Oct. 3, 2002, at 12:11 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Crocker was born in Union on Oct. 8, 1932, a daughter of the late Calvert and Ruth Goings Farr. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockhart and the Lockhart Senior Citizens. Mrs. Crocker was a graduate of Kelly Pinckney High School and was retired from Milliken Research Center of Spartanburg.

urviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Ed (Butch) Guy of Herndon, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven Charles and Bonnie Elwood Crocker of Gaffney and Perry James and Kim McAbee Crocker of Union; a daughter-in-law, Abby Cochran Crocker of Woodruff; a sister and brother-in-law, Marian Farr Harris and Everett Harris of Union; a brother and sister-in-law, James C. Farr and Pearl Adams Farr of Union; six grandchildren, Benjamin Edward Guy, Daniel James Guy, Kristin Lea Crocker, Katelyn Laree Crocker, Chelsea Elizabeth Crocker and Alyssa Faye Crocker. Mrs. Crocker was pre-deceased by a son, Chris Edward Crocker.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Lockhart conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Phillip Crocker, Butch Crocker, Gary Harris, Dale Lee, Russ Lee, Tim Eaves, Scott Vlock and Jason Childers. Members of Mrs. Crocker's Sunday School Class and members of the Lockhart Senior Citizens are asked to sit in a group.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Kim Crocker, 113 Bentley Town Road, Union. Memorials may be made to the Union County Cancer Services, c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379, or to the Lockhart Relay For Life, c/o Lora Fielder, 3870 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379 or to the First Baptist Church of Lockhart, P.O. Mattie Lee Smith
Union County native

PACOLET Ñ Mattie Lee Smith, 64, of 141 Cart Drive, died Oct. 2, 2002 at her home. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the later Willie and Mary Elizabeth Rice Hughes and the wife of Otis Smith Sr. She was a member of New Salem Zion Baptist Church where she was a Senior Usher, a Missionary, and a member of the Sympathy Club. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star New Hope Chapter 651.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Brenda Reid of Spartanburg, Shirley Gentry of Greenville, and Loretta Shippy of Pacolet; three sons, Otis Smith Jr., and Johnny Smith, both of Lithonia, Ga., and Reginald Smith of Spartanburg; an adopted daughter, Karen Robinson of Boiling Springs; five sisters, Doris Walker, Pearline Hughes, and Mary Davis, all of Santuc, Ruth Sims of Trenton, N.J.; and Willie Mae Thompson of Jonesville; a brother, Roosevelt Hughes of Santuc; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three uncles; four aunts; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at Floyd's Pacolet Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. H. D. Tate. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Heritage Chapel Mausoleum. The family is at the home. Floyd's Pacolet Chapel has charge of arrangements.

Paul E. Smith
Retired

JONESVILLE Paul Elbert Smith, 65, husband of Norma Hawkins Smith, of 1666 Mudbridge Rd., Jonesville, died at his home Oct. 3, 2002, after a sudden illness. Mr. Smith was born in Union on July 17, 1937, a son of the late Englesby T. Smith and Laura Lawson Smith. He was a member of the South Spartanburg Baptist Church of Pauline where he had served as Deacon, Usher and Trustee. Mr. Smith was retired from Clary Hood, Inc. after 49 years of service.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Stanley Paul Smith and his wife Kim Smith of Jonesville and Mark Edward Smith of Jonesville; two sisters, Anna B. Rollo of Enoree and Phoebe A. Vaughn of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Herman H. Smith of Pauline; a grandson, Brandon Paul Smith of Jonesville; and two step-grandchildren, Shawn Thompson and Harley Smith both of Jonesville. Mr. Smith was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Mary Veitch, Fred Smith, E.T. Smith and Marvin Smith.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the South Spartanburg Baptist Church by the Rev. Shannon Faulkner and Dr. Henry Johnson. Burial will be in the West Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mike Smith, Ralph Smith, Todd Baldwin, Joel Taylor, Jared Taylor, Jimmy Veitch, Wayne Veitch and Billy Vaughn.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the Adult Sunday School Class of South Spartanburg Baptist Church and Charles Lancaster, Artie Mayes, Dean Howell, Jeff Lawson, Mark Lawson, Mike Lawson, Ray Vinson, Jim Burnett, Ray Lewis, Norris Fowler, Mike Gault, Pete Quinn, Gary Hawkins, Scotty Sherfield, Robbie Horne, Eddie Lawson, Vance Quinn, Russell Inabinet, Ira Lawson, Clarence Cook, Darrell Kendrick and Ken Henderson.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 1666 Mudbridge Rd., Jonesville. Memorials may be made to the South Spartanburg Baptist Church Building Fund, 102 Gwinn Mill Rd., Pauline, SC 29374. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Earmease H. Bailey
Allendale native

Earmease Simpson Hoover Bailey, 81, wife of Fred R. Bailey of 706 Beatys Bridge Road, Union, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at 5:15 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Bailey was born in Allendale, Jan. 14, 1922, a daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson Hoover and Eugenia Bazzel Hoover. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Shirley Martin of Swanesea, Irma Daniels of Greenville and Cynthia Nash of Greer; two step-daughters, Margaret Betenbaugh of Union and Sue Adams of Union; two sons, James Smith of Winnsboro and David Smith of Lexington; a step-son, Marvin Bailey of St. Petersburg, Fla., 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bailey was predeceased by a son, Wade H. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness conducted by Arthur W. Stevens and Robert L. Tucker. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jerry Martin, Brett Streetman, Joe Adams, Donnie Betenbaugh, Paul Adams and Don Betenbaugh.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Friday night from 6 until 8 p.m. and was placed in Kingdom Hall at 1 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 706 Beatys Bridge Road. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorials & Tributes processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va., 23058-5216. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
