HORSLEY, Mary
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of August 25, 2002, Mary Ellen Rush Horsley, widow of William C. Horsley, Jr. Residence, Charleston, SC. Mrs. Horsley was born February 15, 1930 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of Charles S. Rush and Martha McDaniel Rush. She was a member of Harbor Light Baptist Church. She retired as a teacher with the Charleston County School District.
She is survived by one son, Samuel David Owens and his wife Betsy of Folly Beach, SC; four step-sons, William C. Horsley, III and his wife Vicki of Jacksonville, FL, John R. Horsley of Charleston, SC, Larry W. Horsley of Las Vegas, Nevada, Randy F. Horsley and his wife Debbie of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two brothers, Charles S. Rush, Jr. of Charleston, SC and Robert M. Rush of James Island, SC; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Born October 25, 1925, in Thomson, GA, Mr. Poss was the son of the late Eddie Cicero and Ila Mae Rolling Poss. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and Vietnam, a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch # 50, Hammerton Lodge # 332, the Scottish Rites, 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of Omar Shrine. Mr. Poss was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomson, GA.
Surviving Mr. Poss are two sons, Zachary Dale Poss of N. Charleston, Duane Varnell Poss of Summerville; a sister Betty Jean Gunby; a brother, George W. "Sonny" Poss, both of Thomson, GA; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

GROOMS, Melvin
Melvin Corbett Grooms, 83, of Groomstown Rd., Cross, SC, a retired specialized maintenance mechanic at the Dupont Savannah River Plant, died Saturday at his residence.
The funeral will be at 3:00 PM Tuesday afternoon, August 27, 2002 at the graveside in the Grooms cemetery, Cross, SC. Interment will follow. Directed by DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER.
Mr. Grooms was born April 25, 1919, in Cross, SC, a son of Lee A. Grooms and Carrie Smith Grooms. Mr. Grooms was a Marine Corps Veteran of WWII where he was a combat veteran of Guadalcanal. He was a member of the Black Creek United Methodist Church, the Woodmen of the World, and the VFW. He was a graduate of Cross High School.
Surviving are five sons, Wayne Grooms of West Columbia, David Grooms of Dorchester, Michael Grooms of Beaufort, Paul Grooms of Durham, NC, and Tony Grooms of Gilbert, SC; two sisters, Elise Wren and Parnese Price, both of Columbia; a brother, Jaden O. Grooms of Moncks Corner; and seven grandchildren.

GOUDE, Larry
GEORGETOWN - Larry L. Goude, 44, died Saturday, August 24, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at 4 p.m., in Eastside Free Will Baptist Church. Burial, directed by GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens with military honors.
He was born November 28, 1957, in Georgetown County, a son of Oscar Ervin Goude and Pearl Lee Self Goude.
He was an employee with Stevedoring Services of America at Georgetown Ports Authority and was formerly employed as an industrial painter. He was a former member of the Scaring, HHB 4/178 Artillery in Georgetown. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing and hunting as his hobbies and was an avid Nascar fan.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia F. (Ginger) Goude; his parents of Georgetown; one son, David L. Goude and his wife Shelva of Georgetown; one God-son, Frankie Faile of Georgetown; two daughters, Laura A. Goude and Crystal G. Goude both of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Kristen Goude, Austin Goude and Taylor Morris; two brothers, Wilson E. Goude, Sr., of Andrews and Mark S. Goude of Georgetown; one sister, Sanda S. Baylor of Andrews and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Michael E. Goude, and a sister, Shirley G. Baker.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

OAKES, George
DANVILLE, VA. - George Washington Oakes, 86, died Saturday, August 24, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been a resident of the Roman Eagle Memorial Home for the past five years.
He was born February 22, 1916, in the Whitmell community a son of Sidney Buford Oakes and Sallie Fallin Oakes. Mr. Oakes attended the Whitmell Farm Life School and was a member of the Whitmell United Methodist Church.
Mr. Oakes was a career United States Air Force Veteran, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed at Hickman Field and received injuries during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served duty posts in various parts of the world including the South Pacific, the Azores and Japan. After retirement from the Air Force, he lived in Charleston, S.C., for many years. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Charleston, S.C.
Mr. Oakes was predeceased by a brother, John William Oakes and a sister, Grace Oakes Burton. Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth O. Aldrich of Danville and Sally Lou Oakes of Blairs; a nephew, David W. Oakes of Dry Fork and a niece, Betty Jean Hirsch of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at 11 a.m., from the graveside at Highland Burial Park by the Reverend George Rumney. Military honors by American Legion Memorial Post #325 Honor Guard.
The family will be at the residence of his sister, Sally Lou Oakes, 179 Woodcreek Drive Blairs, Va. WRENN-YEATTS FUNERAL HOME, NORTH MAIN CHAPEL, is in charge of arrangements.

SHAW, Philemon
Philemon Benjamin Shaw, 77, of St. George and formerly of Bamberg, died Saturday, August 24, at his home.
Born June 6, 1925, in Bamberg County, Mr. Shaw was the son of the late Benjamin Shaw and the late Mamie Utsey Shaw. He was a Baptist and enjoyed gardening. Mr. Shaw retired from U.S. Plywood in Orangeburg after 37 years.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 27, 2002, 3 p.m. Memorial services will be at COONER FUNERAL HOME. Rev. Jimmy Powers will officiate.
Survivors include, two sons, Jerry Shaw and Glenn Shaw, both of St. George; one step-daughter, Pat Thompson of St. George; two granddaughters, Michell Page Myers of St. George, and Donna Stevens of Lumberton, N.C.; two grandsons, Michael Shaw of St. George and Wayne Hair of Raleigh, N.C., and a number of great-grandchildren.
