SUMWALT, Letha
Letha Kilpatrick Morris Sumwalt, 81, of Bridgewood Drive, Rock Hill, SC, formerly of Moncks Corner, SC, the former co-owner of Morris Insurance Agency, died Monday in a Rock Hill hospital.
The funeral will be at 11:00 AM Thursday morning, August 22, 2002, in the First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner. Interment will be in Berkeley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM this Wednesday evening. Mrs. Sumwalt was born August 27, 1920, in Charleston, SC, a daughter of Victor LeRoy Kilpatrick, Sr. and Emmalee Godfrey Kilpatrick. She was an active member of the St. John's United Methodist Church, Rock Hill, and was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Moncks Corner, where she attended for forty-one years. Mrs. Sumwalt was the first female to serve on the Board of Directors of Santee Cooper, filling the unexpired term of her late husband, E. Jarvis Morris. She was a member of the Rock Hill Doll Society and was a graduate of Berkeley High School.
Surviving are her husband, Vernon E. Sumwalt; a son, Patrick N. Morris of Mt. Pleasant; a step daughter, Anne S. Hollowell of Charlotte; four step sons, Rollie Sumwalt of Beaman, Iowa, Mark T. Sumwalt of Charlotte, David D. Sumwalt and Douglas H. Sumwalt, both of Rock Hill; two sisters, Doris K. Chinners of West Palm Beach, FL, Thelma K. Gambrell of Boynton Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Jennifer M. Clowney of Atlantic Beach, FL, Meredith A. Morris and Sarah E. Morris, both of Moncks Corner; thirteen step-grandchildren.
MOULTRIE, Dennis
Entered into eternal rest Monday, August 19, 2002, Mr. Dennis James Moultrie of 8224 Freemanvillage Rd., Younges Island. Mr. Lucas was born May 21, 1935 in Waycross, Georgia, a son of Miles F. Lucas and Arlo Kirkland Lucas. Mr. Lucas was a member of Pittman Street Baptist Church. He was a US Air Force Veteran and a retired Shop Planner, Shop 31, with the Charleston Naval Shipyard.
Surviving are his wife of North Charleston; two daughters, Donna Lucas Dudley of West Palm Beach, FL, Connie Lucas Brown of Jonesville, NC; two brothers, Herbert Lucas of North Charleston, SC, Charles Lucas of Summerville, SC; two sisters, Nellie L. Swain of North Charleston, SC, Miriam V. Lucas of Rockville, MD; five grandchildren, Becky, Perry, Jennifer Brown, Wade Hall, Jr., William E. Brown and Emily Brown.

STAPLES, Ellen
Ellen Wolfe Staples, 94, widow of Alfred N. Staples, died August 20, 2002 at her residence in Mount Pleasant. Mrs. Staples was born October 18, 1907 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Arthur C. Wolfe and Myrtle McGarvey Wolfe. Mrs. Staples was a librarian with the public library in Sewickley, PA. She moved to Connecticut in the 1930's and lived there until moving to Mount Pleasant in 1989. Mrs. Staples was a member of the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Myrtle A. Staples (son-in-law, Cecil G. Bennett) of Mount Pleasant, SC; her son, Webster Nelson Staples (daughter-in-law, Darnell Ripa Staples) of Succasunna, NJ; six grandchilren; and eight great-grandchildren.

DEWITT, John
John C. Dewitt, 92, entered into eternal rest, Monday, August 5, 2002. Born in Philadelphia, PA., the son of the late John C. and Catharine Lane Dewitt. He was a retired Naval Captain and a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy.
His wife, Martha Wendla Johnson, precedes him in death. He is survived by a niece, Sandra Johnson Witt of Gainesville, FL., a brother-in-law, Elmer Johnson of Sanford, FL., and a sister-in-law, Alice Johnson Rayburn, of Jacksonville, FL.

KOZAK, Alex
Mr. Alex Michael Kozak, 51, of Blowing Rock, N.C., died Sunday, August 18, 2002, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C.
He was born December 1, 1950, in Norfolk, Va., to the late Michael A. and Elizabeth Russo Kozak. He was a 1970 graduate of Porter-Gaud High School in Charleston and received a business degree from Belmont-Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. He was a self-employed investor and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include, two sons, Michael Alexander Kozak and Joel Andrew Kozak, both of Florence, S.C.; one brother, Peter Kozak and wife, Sandy, of St. George, Utah; special friends, Carol Dickerson and Lauren Dickerson, of Blowing Rock; one aunt, Anne Przyborowski and husband, Ski, of Charleston; one uncle, Joseph Russo and wife, Dorothy, of Newport, R.I.; also, two nieces, eight cousins, and good friends, Joe Mertes, George and Linda Gilleland, Dick and Nancy Vogt, all of Blowing Rock; Lenore Hinnant of Vero Beach, Fla., and Richard Ellis of Asheville.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Boone, N.C.
The family will receive friends, Wednesday evening, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

FILYAW, Kenneth
CADES, SC - Kenneth Wilbur Filyaw, 43, died Monday, August 19, 2002 from injuries received in an accident.
Mr. Filyaw was born in Florence County, a son of Wilbur and Grethel Mims Filyaw. He was a graduate of Cades-Hebron High School. Mr. Filyaw was employed by Sumter Utilities as a Foreman and also worked with McAllister Motors. He was a member of Floyd's Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent. Mr. Filyaw was a Little League Coach for the Rockies in Kingstree and was a member of Puddin Swamp Hunting Club.
Kenny lived a Christian life and we know his heart's desire would be that his lost friends and family would be saved - so that he would see them again in Heaven one day.
Surviving are his wife, Cindy Gause Filyaw of Cades; one son, Myles Kenneth Filyaw of Cades; his parents, Wilbur and Grethel Mims Filyaw of Cades; one brother, Steve Filyaw of Cades; one sister, Brenda Miles of Cades.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at Floyd's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
