PHILLIPS, Jack
FAIRFAX - Mr. Jack Adrian Phillips, husband of the late Josaphine Phillips, died Saturday night at his residence. He was 80.
Mr. Phillips was born in Gracefull, Florida November 16, 1921, a son of the late Mr. John C. Phillips and Mrs. Lolie Leola Baldwin Phillips. He was a retired crop duster who served the area farmers for over 45 years. He was a lifetime member of the SC Agricultural Aviation Association. Mr. Phillips was a Fairfax City Councilman and a volunteer fireman. He was a member of the Fairfax First Baptist Church and Veteran in the Navy during WWII.
Surviving are 3 sons: Robert Adrian Phillips of Saluda, NC, John Alan Phillips of North Augusta, SC and James Morton Phillips of Mt. Pleasant; 1 daughter: Betty Jo Whitten of Aiken. There are 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. Phillips was predeceased by a son, Lonnie Carlton "Butch" Phillips.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 in the First Baptist Church of Fairfax, with committal service in the Fairfax cemetery. Friends may call the residence any time. DAW, Lottie
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of October 21, 2002, Lottie McDuffy Daw, 76, widow of James Redding Daw. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial services in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Thursday morning, October 24, 2002 at 11 o'clock. Interment will be private. Mrs. Daw was born in Kinston, NC, May 28, 1926, the daughter of Iodice Ashley McDuffy and Winnie Mae Daniels McDuffy. She graduated from Selma High School and Rex Hospital School of Nursing in 1947, where she received the Royster Medal for excellence in Nursing. She came to New Bern in 1974. She was a member of West New Bern Presbyterian, where she sang in the choir a number of years. She moved to Charleston in 1996 and became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she also sang in the choir.
Mrs. Daw was a lifetime member and past president of both The Eastern District North Carolina Public Health Association and the North Carolina Public Health Association. She worked in public health for 28 years as a Public Health Nurse, Public Health Nursing Director, State Nursing Consultant, and as Craven County Health Director. She was the nurse representative on the Craven County Board of Health for a number of years.
Surviving are two sons - James R. Daw of Charleston, SC and John Luther Daw of Baltimore, MD; one sister - Gracie Spicer of Chesapeake, VA; two granddaughters - Amanda Kaitlin Daw and Dana Ellen Daw, both of Charleston.

FLECK, John

Mr. Fleck was born May 31, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of John Keene Fleck, Sr. and Anne DeLeon Fleck. He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and served with the US Army. He retired as a graphic artist with Fluor-Daniel Construction Company.
He is survived by his wife of James Island; one daughter: Melissa Fleck Aller and her husband John of James Island; one son: J. Keene Fleck, III and his wife Elizabeth of James Island; one brother: Richard Francis Fleck of Denver, CO and four grandchildren.
MCCOMBS, Robert
Mr. Robert E. McCombs, 66, of Oakland Drive, Cross, S.C., a retired security guard at Santee Cooper, died Sunday evening in a Charleston hospital.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, October 23, 2002, in the chapel of DIAL-MURRAY FUNERAL HOME, MONCKS CORNER, with Military Honors. Burial will be private. Mr. McCombs was born July 10, 1936, in High Point, N.C., a son of Woodrow McCombs and Elizabeth Sellers McCombs Thaxton. He was a member and music director at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Cross.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Morrow McCombs; a son, Mark Thomas McCombs of Columbia; a brother, Richard Woodrow McCombs of Lake Okeechobee, Fla.; and one grandson, Coby E. McCombs.
OLOFSON, Darwin
Darwin R. Olofson, 81, Seabrook Island, S.C., a former newspaperman, died Sunday, October 20, 2002, after a long illness. He was born in Jamestown, N.Y., and was raised and attended schools in Colorado and Wyoming. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1942, and was discharged in November 1945, after three years of sea duty in the South and Southwest Pacific. Mr. Olofson graduated in 1949 from the University of Colorado, where he was selected as a Rhodes Scholar candidate and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He joined the city staff of the Omaha World-Herald in 1949 as a general assignment, police and county government reporter. Mr. Olofson was transferred in 1950 to the Washington Bureau of the World-Herald, where he covered Congress, the White House and various federal agencies during the administrations of seven presidents. He became Washington Bureau Chief in 1971, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. His overseas assignments from Washington took him to 14 countries in Southeast Asia, Europe and Central America. They included coverage of border hostilities between India and China, the overthrow of Somoza in Nicaragua and Marshall Plan activities. Mr. Olofson was a member of the White House Correspondents Association, the National Press Club, and the Gridiron Club, an organization of 60 Washington correspondents and bureau chiefs. In 1987 he was elected to the Washington Hall of Fame by the Washington Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the society of professional journalists. For three years after retiring from the World-Herald, he was associate director of the National Press Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Erna of Seabrook Island; two daughters, Kristin L. Peterson of Keyser, W.Va., Amy L. Swain of Derwood, Md.; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Swain, Travis Swain, and Arthur Peterson, III. A memorial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 28, 2002, at the Kimbel Chapel of St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center, Seabrook Island. Mrs. Myers was born in Blairsville, Ga., August 21, 1925, a daughter of Andrew J. Rogers and Pearl Swanson Rogers. She was retired from Knightsville Elementary School where she was the cafeteria manager for over 32 years and she was a volunteer in the school library. She was a member of Summerville Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Robert, "Bob, " Harold Myers and one daughter, Janice M. Thomas, both of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one sister, Mary Lou Norman of Kennesaw, Ga.; one brother, Hoyt Rogers of Marietta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Jason Myers, Sarah Myers, Kristen Smith, Jennifer Thomas, Allison Thomas, and Brett Thomas, all of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., several nieces and nephews.
