Macedonia High School. He went on to officiate high school and college football in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. For five years he officiated semi-professional football in South Carolina and Georgia. Mr. Davis settled in the Charleston, SC, area where he worked until retirement as a nuclear electrician at the U.S. Naval Shipyard. He was a trustee of Charleston Elks Lodge #242 and a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church.
Surviving Mr. Davis are his wife; two sons, Michael Henry Davis of Durham, NC, and Jeffrey Clark Davis of Goose Creek, SC; one daughter, Stephanie Davis Phelps of North Charleston, SC; one stepson, Pope Manning Simmons of Washington, DC; two stepdaughters, Joy Elizabeth Kruger of Alexandria, VA, and Catherine Ann Green of Columbia, TN; one sister, Mary Louise Osborn of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren, Heather Michelle Wilson of Hanahan, SC, Ashley Lauren Phelps of North Charleston, SC, and Ariana Faith Davis of Goose Creek, SC; one step grandson, Christopher Ryan Green of Columbia, TN; and five step granddaughters, Christin Elizabeth Kruger, Lindsey Ann Kruger, and Frances Nicole Kruger of Alexandria, VA, and Caroline Manning Green and Mary Catherine Green of Columbia, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.

DAVIS, Henry
Henry Clark (Hank) Davis, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Joy E. Davis, died August 13, 2002, in a local hospital. Born February 20, 1924, in Greenville, NC, he was the son of Henry Clark Davis, Sr. and Mamie Pittman Davis.
Mr. Davis attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, NC, and the Citadel. He graduated from Atlantic Christian College in 1949 where he participated in football, basketball, and baseball as a student. He was born in Greenville, NC, and moved to Wilson, NC, at a young age. There he attended Coon High School and lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. As a baseball player at Atlantic Christian College, he was named to the All-North State Conference team in 1947 and 1948 and led the Bulldogs to runner-up finishes in league play. He signed a professional baseball contract with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1949. As a minor leaguer he played in Fayetteville, NC, St. Augustine, FL, Springfield, MA, and DesMoines, IA. He was named Most Valuable Player of the St. Augustine Saints during his rookie year with that team. In September 1950 he was promoted to the Chicago Cubs roster.
Mr. Davis served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII in the Pacific theatre as a "Raider" and was called to action again in November of 1950 in the Korean Conflict. During his military career he received the Purple Heart with Three Stars, a Bronze Star, and the President's unit Citation for the 4th Marine 22nd Regiment. The wounds he sustained cut short his very promising professional baseball career.
In 1957 and 1958, Mr. Davis coached football and basketball.

Creston Swan Tawes, 98, died on Tuesday, August 13, 2002, at the residence of his son on Sullivan's Island. Mr. Tawes was born January 21, 1904, in Cresfield, MD, the son of George and Marion Swan Tawes. He was the owner of Wiggin and Tawes Esso Service Station for 40 years; and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Wiggins Tawes and his son, Rev. Creston Tawes. Mr. Tawes is survived by one son, Warren Tawes and wife Sandra of Sullivan's Island, S.C.; three daughters, Joann Major and husband Dr. Jack, of Glendale, Ariz., Kay Cox and husband Harold of Huntsville, Ala., and Mary Ann Finch of Madison, Ohio; and one sister, Marion Nelson of Cresfield, MD.
