Ruth W. McNeace
Sumner Memorial Baptist member

Ruth Williams McNeace, 79, of 305 Hart St., widow of L. G. McNeace, died at her home on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at 3:30 a.m. after a brief illness. Mrs. McNeace was born in Union on July 9, 1924, a daughter of the late John Baxter Williams and Mary Inez Murphy Williams. She was a member of Sumner Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Debbie M. Teague of Columbia; three sons, Ronnie McNeace and Mike McNeace, both of Union, and Terry McNeace of Jonesville; three sisters, Ruby E. Eubanks and Frances W. Green, both of Union and Shirley R. Pearson of Buffalo; two brothers, Rev. Boyd H. Williams of Union and Larry H. Williams of Buffalo; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Boyd H. Williams and the Rev. Randy Phillips. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7-9. The family is at the home, 305 Hart St., Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sumner Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 59, Union; or to Hospice of S.C., 128-C Medical Science Drive, Union, 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Vera H. Stewart
Greater Union Church member

Vera Helton Stewart, 77, of 101 Bowling Ave., widow of Fred Stewart, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Stewart was born in Newnan, Ga., on May 20, 1926, a daughter of the late Ezra William Helton and Alma Johnson Helton. She was a member of The Greater Union Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie Stewart of the home and Trudy Weaver of Spartanburg; a son, Jim Stewart of Spartanburg; three sisters, Myrtle Willard of Union, Betty Kirby and Martha Ann Bailey, both of Georgia; five brothers, Joe Helton and E.W. Helton Jr., both of Union; Wayne Helton, Elliott Helton and Edward Helton, all of Georgia; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stewart was predeceased by a sister and brother, Tiny Francs Whisand and Jimmy Clifford Helton. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at The Greater Union Church conducted by Dr. John Cody and the Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 101 Bowling Ave., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Victor E. Horne Sr.
Army veteran

JONESVILLE Victor E. (Samson) Horne Sr., 56, of 325 Bobby Faucette Rd., Jonesville, died Oct. 10, 2002, at 5:23 p.m. at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Horne was born in Kelton, Oct. 21, 1945, a son of the late Ottice and Mittie Horne. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Fairforest Baptist Church where he served on the building and grounds committee and the cemetery committee.

Survivors include three daughters, Kimberly Roark and Wendy Eaves, both of Jonesville and April Davis of Union; two sons, Victor E. Horne Jr. of Chester and Rodney T. Horne of Jonesville; three sisters, Jerline Burnett of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeanette Fowler of Union and Sara (Chunk) Adams of the home; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, John Henry Horne.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at Fairforest Baptist Church by the Rev. Aulbrey Calvert and the Rev. Randy Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p. m. Saturday night. It will be placed in the church Sunday at 1 p. m. The family will be at the home, 325 Bobby Faucette Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Dorris S. Smith
Retired LPN

Dorris Smith Smith, of 115 Harlan St., widow of Reuben Marshall Smith Sr., died Oct. 10, 2002, at 3:25 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born in Wilkes County, Ga., on Aug. 15, 1920, a daughter of the late Joseph Victor Smith and Mattie Ruth Moore Smith Drinkard and step-daughter of the late John T. Drinkard.

She was retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital after 37 years of service as an LPN. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the David Clyburn Sunday School Class, and a member of the Louise Willard Circle serving as President for several years. She was a member of the Board of Stewards and Council of Ministries since 1988.

She was a member of the LPN Nursing Association while serving as Treasurer for many years. Mrs. Smith was a member of the BPO Does #148 while serving as treasurer currently and the past 15 years. She served as President for 10 terms. She was a member of and Worthy Matron of the Martha Chapter #79 of the Order of the Eastern Star for several years.

After retiring she was a volunteer at Wallace Thomson Hospital and in other community affairs. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Alexander Stephens Institute in Crawfordville, Ga. and attended the University of South Carolina in Union for two years. She was predeceased by a son, Reuben Marshall Smith Jr. of Greenville and a sister, Mary E. Anderson of Washington, Ga.

Surviving are a daughter, June S. Hicks of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Sallye C. Smith of Greenville; three grandsons, Brendan Shea Smith and his wife Sharon Smith, Patrick Kyle Smith and Casey Campbell Smith all of Greenville; a great-granddaughter, Breanna Michele Smith of Greenville; and a brother, Benjamin E. Smith of Washington, Ga.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Rest Haven Cemetery in Washington, Ga. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 115 Harlan St. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church St., Union, or to the BPO Does Scholarship Fund, c/o Jenny Bryson, 120 Pinedale Ave., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Brenda Joyce Redmon
Homemaker

Brenda Joyce (Jo) Redmon, 60, of Ozark, Ala., died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, in Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Ala. Mrs. Redmon was born in Union County on May 15, 1943, a daughter of the late James Arthur and Dorothy Pruitt Coleman. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Carol Gene Redmon; four sons, Frankie Redmon and Derek Redmon of the home, Kirby and Kathy Redmon of North Carolina, and Arthur and Cindy Redmon of Dothan, Ala.; a daughter, Lynn and Pat Gorman of Louisiana; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Pansy and Robert Prince of Union.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday night from 7-9. The family is at the home, 305 Hart St., Union.

Berkley Porter Sr.
Retired construction worker

Berkley Porter Sr., 78, of 116 Whitlock St., Jonesville, husband of Lucille W. Porter, died at his home Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, after a long illness. Mr. Porter was born in Union County, a son of the late Albert Porter and Mrs. McCarthy Kelly Porter. He was educated in the Union County School, a veteran, a retired construction worker and a member of Mark Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara P. Young of Jonesville and Doris P.Kelley of Jonesville; four sons, Calvin Porter of the home, Reuben Porter of Gaffney, Berkely Porter Jr. of Spartanburg and Jimmy Gregory of Virginia; two brothers, Russell Porter and Boyce Porter, both of Jonesville; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family is at the home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Callaham-Hicks Funeral Home in Spartanburg.

Victor E. Horne Sr.
Army veteran

James M. Kicidis
Retired businessman

James Mitchell Kicidis, 83, of 207 Hillcrest Drive, husband of Kathryn Byrd Kicidis, died Oct. 11, 2002 at 10:50 a.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a period of declining health. Mr. Kicidis was born in Union on Aug. 6, 1919, a son of the late Mitchell D. Kicidis and Lillie Gregory Kicidis. He was a member of the Augsburg Lutheran Church and attended McCutchen Memorial Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple, and the American Legion where he had been a member for 31 years. He was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1937, and was a retired self-employed businessman. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Before joining the Army, Mr. Kicidis was a member of the Quarter Master Corps in Lockhart. Most importantly, Mr. Kicidis had found peace in Christ. He was first married to the late Banner Mallissia Whitener Kicidis.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter and son-in-law, Tami and Steve Howell of Sumter; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael D. and Pat Kicidis and Jim Kicidis and Sally Gordon, all of Charlotte, N.C.; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bennie Outen of Columbia; two step-sons and a daughter-in-law, Melton and Helen Roof of Spartan-burg and Ken Roof of Columbia; a sister, Margaret K. Leventis of Union; two brothers, Paul Kicidis of Union and Nick Kicidis of Myrtle Beach; 15 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Cryptside services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Union Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. Reuben Wallace officiating. Grandson will serve as active pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the home, 207 Hillcrest Drive, Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, P.O. Box 667, Mauldin, S.C., 29662, or to Palmetto Hospice, P.O. Box 7275, Columbia, S.C., 29202, or to a charity of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
