Entered into eternal rest on the evening of August 7, 2002, Jessie Virginia Gordon, widow of James H. Gordon, Sr. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services, Sunday, at 3 o'clock, in Pinecrest Baptist Church. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Gordon was born June 7, 1908, in Givhans, S.C., the daughter of Elmond C. Salvo and Margaret Frances Player Salvo. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church and the Lydia Sunday School Class.
She is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline G. Horn and Margaret G. Nutter both of Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Rev. Frank V. Gordon of Smiths, Ala., Victor C. Gordon of Fair Play, S.C., and James H. Gordon, Jr., of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Frank V. Salvo of Charleston, S.C.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Born December 10, 1926, in Charleston, S.C., Mrs. Seay was the daughter of the late J. David Baker, Sr., and Mary E. Slemons Baker. Mrs. Seay was retired from the S.C. National Bank. She was an active member of Advent Lutheran Church and a member of the Oakbrook Senior Bowling Leagues.
Mrs. Seay is survived by her husband, Dan W. Seay of N. Charleston; a son, Dan R. Seay of Summerville; a daughter, Nancy S. DePriest of Goose Creek; two brothers, David Baker of Sullivan's Island and Marion Baker of Charleston; four sisters, Mary E. Shoemaker, Goldie Lipsey, and Teresa Reeves, all of Decatur, Ga., and Doris Wright of Charleston; five grandchildren.
WENDELL, Ethel
GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Ethel Thomas Wendell, 93, died Friday, August 9, 2002, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Wendell was born in Georgetown on March 4, 1909, a daughter of the late Daniel T. Thomas and Catherine Cox Thomas. She was a sales representative for Avon Products, Inc., and retired in 1992. Mrs. Wendell and her late husband, Frank Riley Wendell, operated Wendell's Grocery until 1981. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and served her church as a board member, Sunday School Superintendent, and as a Kindergarten Sunday School Teacher.
Surviving are: three sons, Riley F. Wendell, II, and Larry Wendell, both of Georgetown, and Daniel "Dan" A. Wendell of Myrtle Beach; three daughters, Leyola W. Shokes of Georgetown, Katherine W. Plunkett of Summerville, and Lynn W. Smith of Hilton Head; eighteen grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME. Officiating will be the Rev. Henry Duncan, Jr. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from six until eight Saturday evening, August 10, 2002.

Leroy Winter, 77, widower of Mary Thornal Winter, of Summerville, died Thursday, August 8, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. Winter was born February 1, 1925 in Berkeley County, SC, a son of the late Charles Winter and Elizabeth Grooms Winter. He was a retired Tool Room Mechanic with Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Limestone Baptist Church and a Navy Veteran.
Survivors include: a daughter, N. Faye Winter; a son, Terry Winter; a brother, William Winter, all of Summerville, SC; a half sister, Hazel Koger of Orlando, FL; 6 grandchildren, John L. BEARD, SR., W. Earl
Entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 7, 2002, Wilson Earl Beard, Sr., 84, husband of Sarah Virginia Jones Beard of North Charleston, S.C. Mr. Beard was born in Bamberg County on Thursday, November 29, 1917, a son of Billie Wilson Beard and Lottie Marie Clayton Beard. He was a graduate of Colston Community School and retired after 43 years as the Maintenance Planner with Westvaco where he founded the Paper Mill Retirees Association. He was an active member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, holding numerous leadership positions, a Past Master of the Dorchester Lodge No. 369, A.F.M. and a Past President of the Wando Woods Civic Club. Mr. Beard was active in early years in the efforts to incorporate the city of North Charleston and held countless leadership positions in his community. He was a member of the former Charleston Rod and Reel Club, a charter board member of the C.P.M. Federal Credit Union, Woodmen of the World, the Republican Party, an avid storyteller, golfer and gardener.
Mr. Beard is survived by his wife of North Charleston; three daughters: Marie B. Moore of Palos Park, Ill., Cydney B. Kastner of West Ashley, S.C., and Claire B. Veneziano of Woodbridge, Va.; one son, Wilson E. "Buddy" Beard, Jr. of North Charleston, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Hannah C. Beard of Ehrhardt, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

LAWTON, Florence
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 10, at 11 o'clock at All Saints' Episcopal Church for Florence Davant Lawton, who died August 8 at her home in Atlanta. Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 12, in Magnolia cemetery, Charleston, SC. Born Oct. 2, 1906, Florie was the daughter of Edward Payson Lawton and Harriet Matilda Hard. Her childhood was spent in the Low Country in and around Charleston, in Berkeley County, and in the town of Summerville, where the family settled when she was a child. Throughout her long life she drew immense joy and strength from the experiences of those early years, which set the pattern for her delight in family gatherings, the company of children, the nurture of plants and gardens, her love of art, music, and reading, her fascination with the wonders of the natural world, and her devotion to her church and community. In 1930 she moved to Atlanta with her sister, Eleanor, and their widowed mother to be near two married
sisters, Mrs. Kenyon B. Zahner and Mrs. C. F. Daugherty, and their brother, A. Davant Lawton. Her business career included work with Union Central Insurance Co., Lawyers' Title Co., and the U.S. Corps of Engineers. In the 1950's she bought and insurance-related service company, which she and her mother operated from their home, freeing her to devote time to other interests. She founded her own non-profit enterprise, the Woman's Exchange, which began in a basement room at All Saints' and expanded to a storefront staffed by volunteers in the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center. Several hundred participants made and sold baby clothes, food items, pottery, woodworking, and jewelry there for a number of years. She was a member of the St. Michael's Chapter at All Saints', a Literacy Action tutor, and active participant in the English-Speaking Union, Camellia Society, High Museum of Art, and Atlanta History Center. She toured North America and Europe in her seventies and eighties, witnessed a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral, and attended opera, concerts, art exhibitions, flower shows and horse races well into her nineties. Her private life continued to reflect the joy of her childhood. She created the Low Country garden at her home on East Paces Ferry Road, where she regularly entertained her expanding family. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Susan Lawton Daugherty, Mildred Cragon Daugherty, Eleanor Reynolds Hale, Sue Lawton Mobley, Ann Lawton Pearce, Harriet Zahner Van Houter, Jane Zahner, Lamar Ager, Edward Lawton Daugherty, Reverend Lawton Daugherty, William Henry Daugherty, Robert Zahner and a multitude of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Beverly Dianne Mullins Bolchoz (our Angel on Earth), 66, of Charleston died Wednesday, August 7th at a local hospital. Born in Williams, S.C. to the late Wallace J. and Freddye E. Carter Mullins. Mrs. Bolchoz was retired Manager of Dukes School of Clay and Fine arts, and attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Mrs. Bolchoz was also a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. She is predeceased by her son, Bernard A. Bolchoz, III, and her brother, Wallace Jackson Mullins, Jr. Surviving Mrs. Bolchoz is her son, Michael F. KRUPP, Jr., Smith
Beloved uncle and brother, Smith Frederick Krupp, Jr., of Charleston, passed away at St. Frances Hospital, early Thursday morning, August 8, 2002.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., March 6, 1916, Mr. Krupp was the only son of the late Smith Frederick Krupp and the late Lula Belle (Nicholson) Krupp.
Mr. Krupp graduated from Tuscaloosa High School, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1934. He attended the University of Alabama and the Citadel. He was a member of the Unitarian Church in Charleston for 50 years.
Mr. Krupp was a retired Engineer from the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he worked for 34 years. He retired on April 30, 1973, but worked with some time with the Stanwick Group.
Mr. Krupp was active in life and held the time spent with family members close to his heart. His love and care of family and friends was never ending. Mr. Krupp was a kind and giving man who touched the hearts of all he knew and met.
Mr. Krupp is survived by his beloved sister, Mrs. Mary N. Battle, wife of Mr. Joe L. Battle, of Birmingham, Ala. Loved ones who cherish his memory are, Patricia White, Nancy Inman, and Robert F. White of Charleston; Betsy B. Devault of Hemingway, S.C.; Robert Benson of Toledo, Ohio; Susan Urick of Seattle, Wash.; Fred Howton of Olney, Md.; James Howton of Maryland; Joe Battle Jr., Donald Bettle; Fred Battle; James Battle and Frank Battle of Birmingham, Ala.
