Dorris Smith , of 115 Harlan St., widow of Reuben Marshall Smith Sr., died Oct. 10, 2002, at 3:25 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born in Wilkes County, Ga., on Aug. 15, 1920, a daughter of the late Joseph Victor Smith and Mattie Ruth Moore Smith Drinkard and step-daughter of the late John T. Drinkard.
She was retired from Wallace Thomson Hospital after 37 years of service as an LPN. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the David Clyburn Sunday School Class, and a member of the Louise Willard Circle serving as President for several years. She was a member of the Board of Stewards and Council of Ministries since 1988. She was a member of the LPN Nursing Association while serving as Treasurer for many years.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the BPO Does #148 while serving as treasurer currently and the past 15 years. She served as President for 10 terms. She was a member of and Worthy Matron of the Martha Chapter #79 of the Order of the Eastern Star for several years. After retiring she was a volunteer at Wallace Thomson Hospital and in other community affairs.
Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Alexander Stephens Institute in Crawfordville, Ga. and attended the University of South Carolina in Union for two years. She was predeceased by a son, Reuben Marshall Smith Jr. of Greenville and a sister, Mary E. Anderson of Washington, Ga.
Surviving are a daughter, June S. Hicks of Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Sallye C. Smith of Greenville; three grandsons, Brendan Shea Smith and his wife Sharon Smith, Patrick Kyle Smith and Casey Campbell Smith all of Greenville; a great-granddaughter, Breanna Michele Smith of Greenville; and a brother, Benjamin E. Smith of Washington, Ga. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gary Byrd. Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Rest Haven Cemetery in Washington, Ga.
Active pallbearers will be Gerald Steagall, Carl Patrick, Bob Patrick, Jimmy Lawson, Phil Wilburn and Wayne Harmon. The following are asked to assemble at the church Monday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: Dr. Kent Switzer, Dr. David Keith, Dr. Thomas Young, Dr. Lance Miller, Joe Bateman, Ned Owings, Harold Lawson and Pearl Crocker, Members of the David Clyburn Sunday School Class, Members of the Louise Willard Circle, Members and former members of BPO Does Drove #148.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 115 Harlan St. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 201 S. Church St., Union, or to the BPO Does Scholarship Fund, c/o Jenny Bryson, 120 Pinedale Ave., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Billy D. Couch Jr.
WOODRUFF Billy David Couch Jr., 44, of 110 Red Ribbon Dr., Woodruff, formerly of Union, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, from injuries received in an auto accident. Mr. Couch was born in Union, Oct. 24, 1958, a son of the late Billy David Couch Sr. and Mable Vanderford Couch.
He was a graduate of Union High School and graduate of Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Couch was employed as an electrician with Milliken & Co., Cedar Hill Plant. He formerly attended Morningside Baptist and Fairview Baptist churches and was a member of Friendship Baptist in Whitmire. Mr. Couch was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving are two daughters, Lindsey Couch and Leslie Couch, both of Union; two sisters, Tracy Coleman of Spartanburg and Darlene Wilson of Union; and a special friend, Emily Bradley of Spartanburg. Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery by his uncle, the Rev. Bill Vanderford.
The family will receive friends tonight at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Home from 7 until 9. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, c/o Hejaz Shrine Temple, P.O. Box 667, Mauldin, S.C. 29662 or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 1108, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at their respective homes. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Amy Christine Giles
Amy Christine Giles, wife of Edmund Giles Sr., 141 McLure St., Union, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Giles was born on Dec. 24, 1938, a daughter of the late Alexander and Alice Shell Young. She was educated in the Union County School System and was a retired homemaker of the Boyce Wade Family for over 20 years.
Mrs. Giles was a faithful member of the Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the Missionary Department, a former member of the Stewardess Board and Senior Choir member.
Surviving in addition to her husband are daughter, Belinda Lott of Union; three sons, Edmund Giles Jr., James Albert Giles and Howard (Juanita) Giles, all of Union; two sisters, Sylvia Elmira (Robert) Jeter and Sarah Mae (Clinton) Gregory and two brothers, Lonnie (Vera) Young and John William Young, all of Union; three grandchildren, Kendrick (Prinotta) Lott, who was reared in the home, of Spartanburg, Kristin Giles and Shemar Giles, both of Union; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday at the Antioch A.M.E. Church at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family is assembled at 112 Pebblecreek Drive (Fairforest Estates), Union. The Gibson and Brown Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Sara Malone Singleton
Sara Malone Singleton, 76, of Henderson, Nevada, former resident of the Putman Community of Buffalo, died Sept. 10, 2003 at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, after an extended illness. Mrs. Singleton was born on July 6, 1927, a daughter of the late Jesse E. and Forest Lawson Malone.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara J. Martin of Myrtle Beach and Cheyanne West of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four grandchildren, David M. Smith of Spartanburg, Rebecka Smith-French of Union, William Kull of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jesse Harper-West of Bristol, Vermont; and four great-grandchildren, Savannah and Nicolas Smith of Spartanburg, and Kelly Tucker and Cameron French of Union. Mrs.
Smith was predeceased by a grandson, Daniel Smith, and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Alexander Smith. White Gibson
White Gibson, 90, formerly of 2003 Lockhart Highway, widower of Hattie Davis Gibson, died Oct. 11, 2002, at 10:50 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Mr. Gibson was born in Sneedville, Tenn., on Sept. 20, 1912, a son of the late Alfred and Leana Sexton Gibson. He was a member and former deacon of Morningside Baptist Church. Mr. Gibson was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, and served as a bailiff for Union County Court for a number of years.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-laws, Bessie and Buck Vinson of Union and Margie and Bill Goodwin of Jonesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Eulis and Linda Gibson of Union; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gibson was predeceased by a daughter, Dorethia Gibson, and two sons, Howard Gibson and Preston Gibson and three brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Saxon and Dr. Tim Driggers.
Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Robert Gibson, Preston Gibson, Howard Gibson, Mike Gault, Keith Gault and Josh Driggers. The following are asked to assemble at the church today at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Deacons and former deacons of Morningside Baptist Church and members of the J.D. Gaines Sunday School Class.
The body is at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today to await the hour of service. The family will be at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to Morningside Baptist Church Building Fund, Bates Avenue, Union; 29379; or to Palmetto Hospice, P.O. Box 7275, Columbia, 29202. Helen C. Glenn
WHITMIRE Helen C. Glenn, 71, of 486 Sims St., widow of Colie B. Glenn, died Oct. 13, 2002 in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Glenn was born in Whitmire, the daughter of the late George P. and Fannie W. Culbertson. She was a retired employee of West Point Pepperell in Whitmire and was a member of the Whitmire United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Tarla G. Wilber of the home; a son, Robert P. Godfrey of Florida; three grandchildren, Michelle Allen of Greer, Tarynn Ecton of Rowlett, Texas and Glenn Godfrey of Oregon; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Allen of Greer and Kali Ecton of Rowlett, Texas.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with interment in the Whitmire Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 352, Newberry, S.C. 29108. Gray Funeral Home of Whitmire has charge of arrangements.
Carrie Sanders
Carrie Belle Sanders, 88, of 150 Jordan Creek Farm Road, Wellford, a former resident of Union, died at her home Oct. 12, 2002, after an extended illness. Miss Sanders was born in Cherokee County on Dec. 17, 1913, a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Peeler Sanders. She was a graduate of Kelly-Pinckney High School and was retired from Milliken & Company, Excelsior Plant and Monarch Plant after 30 years of service. Miss Sanders was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Miss Sanders was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews: Mike Sanders, whom with love, she raised from infancy and after her retirement she made her home with; and Kaye Sanders, Terry Vaughan and David Vaughan, all of Union; Shirley Vaughan of Asheville, N.C.; Polly Dunaway and Billy Dunaway, both of Clinton.
Miss Sanders was predeceased by three sisters and a brother, Irene Sanders, Grace Vaughan, Oarie Dunaway and William Sanders. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Ricky Cook. The body will remain at the funeral home. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Helen H. Scott
JONESVILLE Helen Hyatt Scott, 88, formerly of Main Street, Jonesville, widow of Clarence (Tip) Scott, died Oct. 11, 2002 at 9:30 p.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Scott was born in Union County on May 21, 1914, a daughter of the late Arthur R. and Lula Fincher Hyatt.
She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was active in church organizations as long as her health permitted. She attended Jonesville High School and was retired as lunch room manager of Jonesville Elementary School. After her retirement she drove the van for the Jonesville Senior Citizens. Mrs. Scott was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is a survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer. The family received friends at the church following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to New Hope United Methodist Church, care of Mrs. Warren Little, 473 Bob Little Road, Jonesville, 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Markesha N. Woods
Markesha N. Woods, 27, of 2320 Lockhart Highway., died Oct. 10, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Ms. Woods was born in Union County on Oct. 25, 1974, a daughter of Joe H. and Muriel Johnson Woods. She was a 1992 graduate of Union High School and a graduate of Kings College in Charlotte, N.C. Ms. Woods was a member of Outreach Deliverance Center. She was a veteran of the Air Force where she received a Good Conduct Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Training Ribbon and Longevity Service Award.
She was employed with All Metals Company where she did clerical work. Surviving in addition to her parents are a daughter, Makayla Alexis Trammell of the home; and two brothers, Francis (Utrena) Johnson of Carlisle and Joe H. Woods Jr. of Myrtle Beach. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Outreach Deliverance Center by Pastor Eddie McConnell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be at the home tonight, 2320 Lockhart Highway. Public viewing will be today at the funeral home from 3-8 p.m. and Tuesday at the church. Classmates are asked to assemble at the church at 12:30 p.m. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
