Throughout her long life she drew immense joy and strength from the experiences of those early years, which set the pattern for her delight in family gatherings, the company of children, the nurture of plants and gardens, her love of art, music, and reading, her fascination with the wonders of the natural world, and her devotion to her church and community. She founded her own non-profit enterprise, the Woman's Exchange, which began in a basement room at All Saints' and expanded to a storefront staffed by volunteers in the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center. Several hundred participants made and sold baby clothes, food items, pottery, woodworking, and jewelry there for a number of years. She was a member of the St. Michael's Chapter at All Saints', a Literacy Action tutor, and active participant in the English-Speaking Union, Camellia Society, High Museum of Art, and Atlanta History Center. She toured North America and Europe in her seventies and eighties, witnessed a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral, and attended opera, concerts, art exhibitions, flower shows and horse races well into her nineties. Her private life continued to reflect the joy of her childhood. She created the Low Country garden at her home on East Paces Ferry Road, where she regularly entertained her expanding family.
