MOORE, Lawrence
Lawrence Anthony Moore, 77, of Mt. Pleasant, husband of Gertrude Murphy Moore, died Monday, August 5, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born in Charleston to the late Charles Joseph and Margaret Loretta McGrane Moore and attended Bishop England High School. Lawrence retired from Southern Bell after 36 years as a central office technician. He was a W.W.II and Korean Conflict Navy veteran and was in six First Wave invasions including Tarawa, Tinian, and Peliliu. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a life member of the Charleston Lodge #242, B.P.O.E. Elks, and a life member of both the Knights of Columbus, Rev. P.N. Lynch Council #704 and the Knights of Columbus, Rev. P.N. Lynch Assembly, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3137, and a past member of the Charleston Artist Guild and the Charleston Running Club. Lawrence was an outstanding boxer, weightlifter and runner. He was the 1947 Charleston Golden Glove Champion and the Carolinas' Boxing Champion, a 1948 All South Weightlifting Champion and, in 1951, he was recognized as one of the best 10 Welter Weightlifting Champion and, in 1951, he was recognized as one of the best 10 Welter Weightlifters in his age group. He was the 1952 TriState Weightlifting Champion and Baltimore, Md., Weightlifting Champion. In 1952 he placed III in the tryouts for the Olympics in New York City and, in 1981, at the age of 51, he ran the Boston Marathon. Lawrence ran in numerous other marathons, 18 Cooper River Bridge Runs and many Knights of Columbus Turkey Day Races. In 1986 he set the Carolinas' marathon record in the 60 to 64 age group, and later started bicycling 60 to 62 miles weekly. He will be sadly missed by his family including his wife of 48 years, Trudy, two sisters, Margaret M. Sibbald and Mary M. McKay, both of Charleston and 30 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Charles J. Moore, Jr., Thomas A. Moore and Martin Moore. Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation tonight from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth, St., with the rosary recited at 5 p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 89 Hasell St., with interment in St. Lawrence cemetery. Ernell Sanders Wysocki, 84, of Dorchester, wife of Robert Wysocki, died Monday morning at Doctors Hospital, Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 10, 2002, at 11 o'clock in James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Oakbrook Chapel, 11000 Dorchester Road, Summerville. Burial will be in Dorchester Memory Gardens, Summerville.

Mrs. Wysocki was born on May 14, 1918, in Barnwell, S.C., a daughter of the late Homer Sanders and Carrie Hutto Sanders. She attended schools in Barnwell, S.C. She was a homemaker and a member of Church of Christ, Barnwell, S.C.
Surviving are, her husband of Dorchester; one daughter, Miriam Ellen Beal of Martinez, Ga.; two sons, Harold Walter Peacock, Jr., of Carrolton, Ga., Jimmy Wayne Peacock of Hollywood, S.C.; three grandchildren, Laura Michele Peacock of Charleston, S.C., Claire Peacock Ragsdale of Dallas, Ga.; two sisters, Eleanor Fist of Dorchester, S.C., Inez Gunnells of Lexington, S.C.

POWELL, David
GEORGETOWN - David Powell, 79, died Monday, August 5, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Powell was born March 5, 1923, in Georgetown, a son of the late James Monroe Powell and Laurie Agnes Keller Powell. He was a graduate of Winyah High School and attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Powell served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre during W.W.II. He worked for the Woodlands Division of International Paper Company for 38 years and retired as Safety Director for the Eastern Region.
Mr. Powell was a communicant of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church and was a former Vestryman and Junior Warden. Mr. Powell was a member of the Pine Tree Club, American Legion Post #114, Veterans of Foreign War Post #6444, and the Episcopal Men's Club.
Surviving are, his wife, Vivian Hassett Powell of Georgetown; a son, David Powell, Jr., of Conway; a daughter, Tina Powell Deierlein of Columbia; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at 2 o'clock in Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul C. Fuener and the Rev. Scott R. Fleischer. Inurnment will follow in the Churchyard under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of MAYER FUNERAL HOME.
A reception will be held in Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church Parish Hall, immediately following the services.

Ms. Babor died Thursday, August 1, 2002. Born in France, she was a daughter of the late Pierre Palle and Solange Corbel Palle Potter. She attended the College of Charleston for two years, served in the U.S. Army for one year and was office manager for Storen & Stoney Real Estate and Insurance Co. in Charleston. Ms. Babor loved her family, friends, and her cats. She believed in an afterlife and was an avid sports enthusiast, participating in golf and tennis. She created acrostics, which is a form of crossword puzzle. Ms. Babor loved life very much and lived it to the fullest.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Aprile and Barry Bordner of Augusta, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, USAF Lt. Willi and Luisa Babor of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Michael and Zach Bordner and Cleo Babor; sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Henry Yonce of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Nancy Potter of Arlington, Texas; nephews, Carey Yonce and wife Catherine, Christopher Yonce, Steven Potter, niece, Tina Potter, great-nephew, John Henry Yonce. Ms. Babor was predeceased by step-father, Royal J. Potter and her mother, Solange Potter.
MCMILLAN, Evelyn
Evelyn Whiten McMillan of Bamberg, S.C., widow of the late Charles P. McMillan, died at an Orangeburg hospital, Monday, August 5, 2002, at 4:20 p.m.
Born November 19, 1924, in Charleston, Mrs. McMillan was the daughter of the late John Clarence Whiten and the late Clara Bedingfield Whiten. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bamberg. Mrs. McMillan retired as the Bamberg County Auditor after 46 years.
Mrs. McMillan served 15 years on the Board of Home Federal Savings and Loan and served a number of years on the Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, reading, and traveling.
Funeral services will be August 7, 2002, 3 p.m., at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Bamberg County Memory Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. David Photo.
Mrs. McMillan was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Dorothy.
Survivors include, two sisters, Lucille Whiten Mastone of Charleston, Geraldine Whiten Wright of Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 6, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m., at COONER FUNERAL HOME in Bamberg. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bamberg.
RUBERTUS, Harriett
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Harriett Balfour Troy Rubertus died at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home, Charlotte, NC, on Aug 1, 2002.
She was born into a military family at Fort Jackson, SC, 11 February 1921, the daughter of the late Col and Mrs. Thaddeus S. Troy. After attending schools in Washington, DC, and St. Petersburg, FL, Harriett attended the University of Arkansas prior to going to work for the US Army in Ft. Sill, OK.
She was married
for 49 years to Col William F. Rubertus, a US Army Air Corps bomber pilot, who predeceased her. They traveled extensively - from Alaska to Africa - while he served throughout the world in the US Air Force. She was member of the Civil Air Patrol, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, and an enthusiastic volunteer at the Officers Wives Club wherever they were stationed. A bundle of energy with a quick, warm smile, she served as writer and editor for Mats Mates, chaired countless boards of the local OWCs, and was always an active member of the House and Garden Club, winning many ribbons at annual flower shows. After her husband’s retirement, they settled down in Summerville, SC. She retired from the Charleston AFB Library after 19 years as librarian and publicity chairman, winning that library 1stplace awards in the Material Air Command publicity category nine years in a row.
To her family, she’ll be remembered as a true lover of animals, dedicated buyer of pop-tarts, and the only woman alive who could talk her husband into having a bedroom and bathroom decorated entirely in purple.
She is survived by her daughter Frances Taylor of Charlotte, NC; son William K. Rubertus and his wife Ann of Bend, OR; granddaughters Ceci Taylor of Olympia, WA, and Maureen Taylor of Chicago, IL; great-grandson Conner; brother Col Guy K. Troy and his wife of Liberty, NC; nephews Maj Kent Troy of Tacoma, WA, and Thad Troy of Washington, DC; and cousins Joanne Larsen of Myakka City, FL, and Sam Green of St Petersburg, FL.
A private ceremony to celebrate her life will be held in Sisters, OR, on August 11, 2002.
POOLE, Marie
KINGSTREE - Mrs. Marie Smith Poole, 89, widow of John Glenn Poole, died Monday, August 5, 2002, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mrs. Poole was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Daniel Herbert and Frances Irene Kennedy Smith. She was a graduate of Hebron High School, and was a former bookkeeper for Dixon Lumber Company of Lake City, and she retired as bookkeeper from Southern Agricultural Chemical Company of Kingstree. She was a lifetime member of Hebron United Methodist Church, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kingstree.
Survivors include one son, John G. Poole, Jr. (Sharon) of Huber Heights, Ohio; four grandchildren: John G. Poole, III of Statesville, N.C., Elizabeth Starling of Doraville, Ga., Julie Poole of Enfield, Conn. and Holly Poole of Tampa, Fla.; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 9, 2002 in the Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hebron United Methodist Church.
