Joel A. Grant

Joel Arthur Grant, 49, of 432 N. Main St., Saluda, died Oct. 13, 2002, at Lexington Medical Center. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Rosemont Cemetery in Union by the Rev. John Griffith. The family will be at the home, 432 N. Main St., Saluda. Memorials may be made to The Chapel, c/o Amick Farms, PO Box 2309, Leesville, SC 29070. Ramey Funeral Home, Saluda, is in charge of local arrangements.

Eva Lee Moss
Retired from Monarch Mill

BUFFALO - Eva Lee Harvey Moss, 84, of 1218 Linersville Road, Buffalo, widow of Johnny Moss, died Oct. 14, 2002 at 10:05 a.m. in Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney after an extended illness. Mrs. Moss was born in Buffalo on July 2, 1918, a daughter of the late Mack and Lula Weathers Harvey. She was a Baptist and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant. Mrs. Moss was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, J. Harold and Annette Mills of the home, Robert Mills Sr. and Thelma Mills of Gaffney; four grandchildren, Mark Mills and James Dean Mills both of Buffalo, Robert Dean Mills Jr. and Lydia White both of Gaffney; four great-grandchildren, Beth Mills and Logan Mills of Buffalo, Bryan White and Scott White, both of Gaffney; and a great-great-grandchild, Alexis Danielle Millen of Gaffney.

Mrs. Moss was predeceased by a grandson, Ronnie Wilson. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Mike Proctor. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 1218 Linersville Road, Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Joseph W. Bateman
Union native

Joseph W. (Joe-Joe) Bateman, 55, of 2147 Spartanburg Highway, Pacolet, passed away early Tuesday morning, Oct. 14, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health. Joe-Joe was the son of the late Kathleen Sullivan Bateman and Joseph F. Bateman Jr.. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Spartanburg Technical College. He was employed for many years at Price's Machine Shop in Spartanburg.

Joe-Joe was also well known and respected for his love of raising cattle and reluctantly had to give it up due to his health problems. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Union. He was always willing to go out of his way to help anybody that found themselves in need; he will be missed by many people.

He is survived by two aunts and many cousins. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joe W. Smith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 until 8. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Union County Meals on Wheels, c/o Monte Lancaster, Arthur State Bank, Union, S.C. 29379 or to the American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, S.C. 29615. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Roy F. Comer
Retired from DHEC

CHARLESTON - Roy F. Comer, of Charleston, widower of Isabel Graham Comer, died Oct. 14, 2002. Mr. Comer was born on Feb. 8, 1907 in Kelton, a son of Elzie E. Comer and Lucinda Gault Comer. He was retired as a sanitary engineer with DHEC.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Union and was a graduate of Clemson University where he was a member of the Senior Platoon Class of 1930. He was a member of the Lions Club in Union and the Clemson Block C Club.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. Comer of Augusta, Ga.; a daughter, Eugenie G. Comer of Charleston; and three grandchildren, Mary Keith, Jamieson and Christopher Comer. Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at MClellanville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the McClellanville United Methodist Church, 414 Pinckney St., McClellanville, SC 29458. J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, Charleston, has charge of arrangements.

Jerry W. Braxton Sr.
Retired industrial electrician

Jerry Wayne Braxton Sr., 56, of National Healthcare, Laurens, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, in Clinton. Mr. Braxton was born in Union on March 13, 1947, a son of the late Frank and Carrie Aileen (Dinah) Harrison Braxton. He was a Baptist. Mr. Braxton was a retired industrial electrician.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry Wayne Braxton Jr., of Buffalo and Mike Allen Braxton of Orangeburg; three sisters, Mary O'Dell, Nancy Browning and Sandy Childers, all of Union; three brothers, Bruce Braxton of Buffalo, Dennis Braxton of Orangeburg and Tommy Braxton of Tennessee, and four grandchildren.

Mr. Braxton was predeceased by a sister, Susan Braxton Harris. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Griffin, Walt Griffin, Mike Fields, Robby Evans, Mike Spires, John Wayne Malpass, Tim Harrison and Norman Emler. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 9. The family will be at the home of his sister, Sandy Childers, 1208 W. Main St., Apt. 1-D, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

John R. Harbin
Greenwood resident

GREENWOOD - John Randall Harbin, 55, of 2322 Old Laurens Road, husband of Patty Valentine Harbin, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Self Regional Medical Center. Services will be announced by Harley Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. The family is at the home. Harley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Naomi B. Quinn
Union County native

SPARTANBURG - Naomi Barnett Quinn, 84, formerly of 1060 Old Johnson Road, Cowpens, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at White Oak Estates. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Henrietta Lancaster Barnett and the widow of Holman Quinn. She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Cowpens.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Doris Quinn of Spartanburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda and Wofford Lawson of Spartanburg and Faye Cooley of Cowpens; five grandchildren, Robbie Cooley of Spartanburg, Joel Cooley of Cowpens, Lynne French, Yancy Quinn, and Tina Seay, all of Spartanburg; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hill, Colby Seay and Georgia Seay.

Visitation will be from 7 until 9 tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Terry Wilson. Burial will follow in Daniel Morgan Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church Parking Lot Fund, P.O. Box 310, Cowpens, S.C. 29330.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Faye Cooley, 1060 Old Johnson Road, Cowpens.

Thomas L. Estes Jr.
World War II veteran

Thomas Lemuel (Tom) Estes, Jr., 89, of Frampton Hall, 307 N. Broad St., Clinton, formerly of 111 Douglas Heights, Union, widower of Margaret Steele (Steelie) Estes, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Laurens County Hospital in Clinton. Mr. Estes was born in Union on Dec. 22, 1913, a son of the late Thomas Lemuel Estes, Sr., and Allie Kerr Estes. He was a member and Elder Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Estes as a graduate of Union High School and Presbyterian College where he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity and was a member of the Scotsman's Club and until recently, served on the Board of Visitors for Presbyterian College. He was an active member of the Union Lions Club for over 50 years and was awarded Lion of the Year.

Mr. Estes was a veteran of World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and was former owner of Gulf Oil Distributors of Union.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret E. and Bryan McCanless of Greenville; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Estes III and Sue Estes of Saginaw, Mich., three grandchildren, Dr. Sam Estes of Lansing, Mich., Kelly Estes of Traverse City, Mich. and Sara Margaret Fleming of Greenville; five great-grandchildren, Samantha Estes, Sydney Estes, Allie Estes, Carley Fleming and Hunter Fleming.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Randy Harbin
Owner SCM Office Systems

GREENWOOD - John Randall (Randy) Harbin, 55, of 2322 Old Laurens Road, husband of Patty Valentine Harbin, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Self Regional Medical Center. Born in Seneca, he was a son of Edna Foster Harbin and the late Franklin N. Harbin. He was a 1966 graduate of Greenwood High School and was employed by Smith-Corona Marchant from 1967 to 1974.

In 1975, he founded Southern Calculating Machines, now SCM Office Systems. He was a former member of the Greenwood Civitan Club and attended New Life Pentecostal Holiness Church. Randy was very active in his hobbies, first and foremost, his grandchildren, followed by fishing, gardening and farming, and was a sponsor of the S.C. Waterfowl Association.

Surviving in addition to his wife of the home and his mother of Greenwood are two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Heather Harbin of Abbeville and Keith and Lori Harbin of Greenwood; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and David Lancaster of Union; a sister, Susan H. Williams of Greenwood; three brothers, Mike Harbin of Seattle, Wash., Stephen Harbin and Jerry Harbin, both of Orlando, Fla.; five grandsons, Kenny Harbin, Kameron Harbin, Keaton Harbin, Kelton Harbin and Michael Lancaster; 12 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Alton L. Stone Jr., the Rev. Phillip Morris and the Rev. J. C. Sorrow officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Grier, Dan Wideman, Steve Morrow, Dave Valentine, Russ Landers, Reed Watterson Charlie Watson, Rock Davis and Dee Ouzts. Honorary escort will be the employees of SCM Office Systems, Mary Frances Brown, Anthony White and Randy's Barnyard Crew, which includes Donnie Teems, Tully Graham, the Rev. J. C. Sorrow, Jones Buchanan, Gene Hall, Lou Chadwick, Bob Fisher, Ronald Owens, Carl Rogers, Bill Hughes and Wade Knight.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 6 until 8. The family is at the home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorials and Honor program, 501 St. Judge Place, Memphis, Tenn., 38105-1942. Harley Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
