BREWER, Ronald
Ronald "Buddy" Brewer, 68, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 at his residence. Born in Charleston, S.C. on December 7, 1933, he was the son of the late William George and Lucille Brooker Brady Brewer. Mr. Brewer was a transport driver and a former employee of Stuhr Funeral Home. He was graduate of Bishop England High School and a member of Northwood Assembly Church in North Charleston. He was past president of the North Charleston Optimist Club. Mr. Brewer is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lillie Mae Kieber Brewer; five sons, Gary Brewer of Washington State, Ronald "Bud" Brewer of N. Charleston, S.C., Dale Kieber of Ladson, S.C., Dwayne Kieber, N. Charleston, S.C., Scott Kieber, Summerville, S.C.; three daughters, Karen Forbes, Bainbridge, GA, Carol Sheider, Norfolk, VA, Donna Davis, Charlotte, NC; one sister, Sharon Belding of Summerville, S.C.; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

SIMMONS, Ella
Ella T. Simmons, 85, co-founder of Simmons Seafood died Sunday July 28, 2002 at an assisted living facility in Mt. Pleasant. Born December 4, 1916 in McClellanville, S.C. she was the daughter of William McClellan and Louise H. Taylor (nee Freeman). She was a graduate of Memminger High School and a longtime member of The Church of the Holy Cross. She and her husband, The late L. Hugh Simmons, Sr., founded Simmons Market on Sullivan's Island in 1937. They operated the grocery until 1954 and opened Moultrie Fisheries in Mt. Pleasant in the early 1950s. They operated Simmons Seafood in Mt. Pleasant from 1955-1970. Survivors include four children and their spouses: L. Hugh (Red) Simmons, Jr. (Cindy), William R. (Billy) Simmons (Deedie), Carolyn S. Webb (Billy) all of Mt. Pleasant, and Francis Y. Simmons (Mary Lou) of Sumter, S.C.; brother George T. Taylor and his wife Mary of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law Mrs. John F. Taylor of Mt. Pleasant; ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002 in The Church of the Holy Cross, 2520 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island. JEFFERSON, S.C. - Mr. Daniel Henry "Bub" Douglass, Jr., age 79, died Sunday, July 28, 2002. Funeral Services will be 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at the Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Jefferson cemetery with Masonic Rites. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:00 Noon until 4:00 p.m. at the Jefferson Presbyterian Church. Mr. Douglass was born February 27, 1923 in Jefferson, S.C., a son of the late Daniel Henry Douglass, Sr. and Agnes Goza Douglass. He graduated from Jefferson High School, attended Oglethorpe College in Atlanta, GA, and was a graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C.
Mr. Douglass was a veteran of the United States Navy having participated in the Normandy Invasion during WWII, and was Honorably discharged in 1945. He retired as Captain in the United States Army Reserves.
Mr. Douglass was a faithful, lifelong member of Jefferson Presbyterian Church, serving in every capacity including Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and Elder. His adopted church home was Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, and he was also a former member of Chesterfield Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Macedonia Masonic Lodge 239 for more than 50 years, and held every office within the lodge including Worshipful Master.
Mr. Douglass was a devoted member of the Jefferson-Angelus American Legion Post 80, and served on the Board of Directors of Hospice of Chesterfield County.
Mr. Douglass was elected and served four terms as Clerk of Court for Chesterfield County. At one time while serving as Clerk, he also assumed the office of Probate Judge for Chesterfield County. He was elected President and Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Jefferson after his Father's death in 1963. Mr. Douglass served continuously in that position until his death.
Mr. Douglass has served on many Boards and Committees for the South Carolina Bankers Association and the Independent Bankers Association of South Carolina. He was former owner and operator of the Jefferson Insurance Agency and also the Chesterfield Insurance Agency. Because of his passion for his hometown, he was always an ambassador for the Town of Jefferson everywhere he went.
Mr. Douglass is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Virginia Gardner Douglass, 3 daughters, Patricia Douglass Ogburn and her husband Derial of Lugoff, S.C., Virginia Kay Douglass Eddy and her husband Bill of Charlotte, NC and Fran Douglass Crook of Monroe, NC one son, Daniel Henry Douglass III and his wife Chasity of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., 7 grandchildren, Meredith Leigh and Lauren Virginia Ogburn, Christopher David and Jared Stefan Sanspree, William Andrew Eddy, Ashley Rhea and Alexander Douglass Mills, one sister Katherine Douglass Thaxton of Pageland, S.C. and his extended family at the Bank of Jefferson.

HAIR, Ellie
Mrs. Ellie Jo Hair, widow of Herman Hair, died Saturday evening in Providence Hospital of Columbia. She was 90.
Mrs. Hair was born in Hampton County April 17, 1912, a daughter of the late Alvin and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Harvey. She retired after 34 years with Davan Manufacturing as a fabric distributor and was a Baptist.
Survivors include: 1 son: Jobie Hair, of Fairfax. 1 daughter: Myrt Jennie McCormick, of Panama City Beach, FL. There are 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

GOSS, James H.
Chief James H. Goss, entered eternal rest on July 28, 2002, at his home in Mount Pleasant, S.C. The relatives and friends of Chief and Mrs. James H. Goss are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Christ Episcopal Church. The family will be receiving friends at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, East Cooper Chapel, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mount Pleasant, 884-3833, on July 30, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Chief Goss was born February 13, 1930, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Klement and Ruth Kreitler Goss. Chief Goss retired as Chief of Public Safety for the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Charleston in 1997 and as Lieutenant from the Buffalo New York Police Department in 1976. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps 1947-1950 and the U.S. Marine Corps 1951-1959.
Chief Goss graduated from Buffalo State College in 1976. He accomplished 41 years in law enforcement starting as a patrolman in 1956. While with the Buffalo PD he was instrumental in the creation of one of the first Special Weapons and Tactics Teams (SWAT) in the country and was also the commander of the Underwater Recovery Team and the Police Academy. He was also in charge of the Buffalo Police Honor Guard and Drill Team. Following retirement from Buffalo he worked for several years with the Charleston County Police Department, as Assistant Chief and as the Commander of the Metro Narcotics Unit before becoming Chief of the Hanahan, S.C. Police Department. He was employed by MUSC and the College of Charleston until his retirement.
Chief Goss received numerous awards and citations during his career. The Sons of the American Revolution honored him as Buffalo New York Police Officer of the Year in 1976. He was also cited for heroism in 1969 for pulling a man from a submerged automobile.
Chief Goss, a well-known local woodcarver, was a member of the National Woodcarvers Association. Many of his carvings are on display at the Medical University Children's Hospital Atrium roller-coaster, Heart Center and St. Luke's Chapel.
He was a member of the Etiwan Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Omar Shrine. He was currently the Assistant Rabban, 2nd Vice President, of Omar Shrine and was a past director of the Keystone Kops Shrine Unit. He was most honored to be invited to become a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 113, of which he was a Past Director and a member of the Lowcountry Billiken Club. Chief Goss was also a member of Washington Light Infantry, a member of the Board of Directors International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the S.C. Police Chiefs Association.
Chief Goss is survived by his wife, Margaret McNaughton Goss, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., three sons, James H. Goss, Jr., and his wife, Gina, of Hamburg, New York, Francis P. Goss of Bremen, Germany, William B. Goss and his wife, Sandra, of Lewisville, N.C., and five daughters, Deborah Barnes and her husband, Larry of Summerville, S.C., Linda Lindsley and her husband, Joseph of Lewisville, N.C., Mary Maciejewski and her husband, Mark of Goose Creek, S.C., Susan Spencer and her husband, James of Colden, N.Y., and Kathleen Hilliard and her husband, Wesley of Charlotte, N.C. Twenty-five grandchildren also survive him Lynn Marie, Sara Ann, Angela, Colleen, Patrick, Joseph, James and Savannah Goss, Brian, Laura, Alissa and Christina Barnes, Amber, Clifford, Chad and Clint Lindsley, Bill and Tim Maciejewski, Alison, Megan and Jamison Spencer and Samuel, Matthew, Daniel, and Grace Hilliard. A sister, Jane Goss Pitello of Centerreach, Long Island, N.Y., two brothers-in-law, W. Dan McNaughton of Royal Oak, Mich., Thomas P. STEVENSON, Kristin
The family of Kristin Anne (Limbach) Stevenson sadly announces her death on Wednesday, July 24, 2002, of complications from lung cancer.
She was born on August 11, 1943, in Indianapolis, Ind., to the late Clarence C. Limbach and Nola M. (Powell) Limbach. She attended Indiana University, Bloomington, graduating with honors from the University of California, Riverside, with degrees in both American literature and philosophy, and completed graduate coursework in philosophy. She was a homemaker, property manager, wife, and mother. She most recently worked at the College of Charleston, S.C.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, retired Major Jack Stevenson; loving children, Elizabeth A. Anderson of Pine Knot, Ky., Mark Stevenson of Washington, D.C., and Stephanie A. Hill of Charleston, S.C.; as well as three adoring grandchildren, Sara Shepherd of Pine Knot, Ky., Lucas K. and Maddie A. Hill of Charleston, S.C.; her affectionate sister-in-law, Cathy Limbach of Kingston, N.Y.; and three inspired nieces, Marie Limbach of Kingston, N.Y., Sarah Limbach of Albany, N.Y., and Anne Seward of Litchfield, N.H. She was predeceased in 1992 by her younger brother, Powell Limbach of Kingston, N.Y.
In accord with her wishes, the family honors and remembers her spirit in a private memorial service at Parks Funeral Home, Summerville, S.C.

YARD, Robert
CHESAPEAKE, VA. - Robert H. Yard, a native of Toms River, N.J., died on July 26, 2002. Predeceased by wife of 41 years, Mrs. Jean Breneman Yard, RN. There are three children, Mrs. Deborah Y. Armstrong of Virginia Beach, Va., Robert H. Yard, Jr., Tavernier, Fla., and Mrs. Nancy Y. Stevens of Goose Creek, S.C. There are four grandchildren, Marie and Brian Armstrong of Virginia Beach, Va., and Raymond and Carrie Stevens of Goose Creek, S.C.
Mr. Yard is the former editor of the Ocean County Sun in Toms River. His paper won the "Best in Class" award from the New Jersey Press Association in 1951. Later that year he joined the public relations department of the New Jersey Bell Company's headquarters in Newark, N.J. As a copywriter during his 31 years at Bell, he served as editorial director of the company's employee and magazine and newspaper, employee manager and public relations manager.
He was named Communicator of the Year in 1966 by the New Jersey Association of Business Communications. He was also selected as a member of the nationwide committee of editors for the advertising council in Chicago to boost use of ad council programs by employee publications.
He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, copy editor of the Daily Pennsylvania and a member of the Franklin Society. He is a member of both the Monmouth and Ocean County Historical Associations and the Naval Airship Association. He was a member and former president of the New Jersey Association of Business Communicators and a charter member of the Toms River Rotary Club.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. Rix Yard. The elder Mr. Yard was the first Mayor of Dover township.
A World War II veteran, he served with the Sixth Air Force in Panama.
They lived in Middleton for two years where they worked with the Reverend Berkins to establish the King of Kings Lutheran Church. They moved to Wall where they lived until Mr. Yard retired in 1983 and they moved to Ladson, S.C. He moved to Virginia Beach in1955, where he is a member of the Heritage United Methodist Church.
