BROWN, Arthur
Arthur Eugene "Froggie" Brown, 52, of St. Helena Island, S.C., died July 23, 2002, in a Beaufort hospital.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., at CHISOLM GALLOWAY HOME FOR FUNERALS.
Funeral services will be at Ebenezer Baptist Church, St. Helena Island, S.C., 12 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2002. Burial in U.S. National cemetery, Beaufort, S.C., with military honors.
Mr. Brown was born March 22, 1950, in St. Helena Island, S.C., the son of the late Elizabeth Polite Brown and Samuel Brown, Sr.
Mr. Brown is a 1968 graduate of St. Helena High School. Mr. Brown served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force. His declaration included the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After military service, Arthur returned home to the Frogmore Community on St. Helena Island. He was employed with the Marriott Resort and the Westin Resort. He also worked for Beaufort County Maintenance Department for eight years. He left the work force in 1994 because of failing health.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Polite Brown, and two sisters, Evelyn Brown Burke and the Reverend Carne Bell Brown.
Survivors include, father, Deacon Samuel Brown, Sr., St. Helena Island, S.C.; two sons, Antonio Brown, St. Helena Island, S.C., Roy McKnight of the U.S. Army; three sisters, Shirley Inabinett, St. Helena Island, S.C., Emily Brown, Newark, N.J., and Geraldine Brown, Newark, N.J.; five brothers, Samuel Brown, Jr., St. Helena Island, S.C., George L. Brown, St. Helena Island, S.C., Thomas Brown, Sr., New York, N.Y., Joseph Brown, Trout Wood, Ohio, and Thomas Boles, Freeport, Texas; and one grandchild.
WARD, Howard
GEORGETOWN - Howard Kent Ward, 64, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at 3 p.m., in Maryville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Officiating will be Rev. Tommy Cox, Rev. J. Alvin Cribb and Mr. George Blakely. Burial, directed by GRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
He was born April 5, 1938, in Williamsburg Co., a son of the late Cornelius Ward and Annie Sue Howard Ward.
He was a long-time employee with several area retail groceries and during his career worked in Andrews, Georgetown and Shalotte, N.C. He was a former member of the SCARNG, HHB 4/178 Artillery Battery in Georgetown. He was a member of Maryville Pentecostal Holiness Church and enjoyed fishing as his hobby.
Surviving are, his wife, Elaine C. Ward; one son, Robert Kevin Ward of Georgetown; one daughter, Kelli W. Holcombe of Georgetown; one granddaughter, Kyleigh Kent Ward; two grandsons, Oliver Ryan Holcombe and Kevin Pete Ward all of Georgetown; one brother, Donald W. Ward of Georgetown; one sister, Emily W. Inman of Georgetown and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

POLK, Debbie
ISLANDTON - Mrs. Debbie Winn Kinard Polk, 71, of 2504 Polk Road, died Saturday at Roper Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, at the chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Smoaks Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Polk was born in Hampton County, a daughter of the late John and Clara Peeples Winn. She was a retired seamstress with Smoaks Manufacturing and was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Harry Polk, a daughter, Anne Padgett of Ruffin, a son, Vernon Kinard of Ruffin, four step-sons, Herschell Polk of Mt. Pleasant, Thomas Polk of Islandton, Ralph Kinard and Clyde Kinard, both of Walterboro, four step-daughters, Mary Carter of Hunters Chapel, Carolyn Ehney of Islandton, Judy Bazzle of Ehrhardt, and Jackie Ranly of Ladson, three brothers, Mike Winn of Hampton, Jesse Winn of Aiken, and Jack Winn of Riverdale, Md., and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, O.B. Kinard and by a son, Wayne Kinard.
MCALHANEY, Faye
SMOAKS - Mrs. Ethel Faye Barnes McAlhaney, 78, of 2253 Buckhead Road died Saturday at Bamberg Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, at Berea Advent Christian Church with Rev. James McAlhaney officiating. Interment will follow in Hagen cemetery, directed by the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home.
Mrs. McAlhaney was born in Colleton County, a daughter of the late James Melvin Barnes and Azalea Barnes Barnes. She was a retired seamstress with Smoaks Manufacturing and was a member of Berea Advent Christian Church. She was the widow of the late John Walter McAlhaney.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra M. Harrell of Smoaks and Lynah Faye M. Crosby and her husband Danny of Smoaks, a brother, "Ed" Oscar Barnes of Smoaks, three grandchildren, Sherri Lyons, Harry "Bubba" Harrell, Jr., and Christy Bunton, all of Smoaks, seven great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Harry Harrell, Sr., a sister, Mary Grace Barnes, and a brother, James Edsel Barnes.

HORSLEY, Jr., William

Mr. Horsley was born February 11, 1920 in Kingman, Indiana, the son of William Clifford Horsley and Sallie Aills Horsley. He was a U.S. Army Veteran who served with distinction in The Philippines during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received numerous awards and decorations during his 20 year career, including two Bronze Stars. After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1962, he settled in Charleston where he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. After leaving the Shipyard, he worked at the Summerville Post Office as a Rural Postal Carrier where he retired when he was in his seventies. He was a very active member of Harbor Light Baptist Church, was good to his family and thoroughly enjoyed the games of Tennis and Bridge.
He is survived by four sons: William C. Horsley, III and his wife, Vickie, of Jacksonville, Fla., John R. Horsley of Charleston, S.C., Larry W. Horsley of Las Vegas, Nev., and Randy F. Horsley and his wife, Debbie, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn H. Bell of Long Beach, Calif.; one step-son, David Owens and his wife, Betsy, of Folly Beach, S.C.; and one step-grandson, Ryan Alderman.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Dale Miller of Chesapeake, Ohio; two sons, John Benton Vincen of Gilbert, West Virginia and James D. Vincen of Goose Creek, S.C.; one sister, Blanche Dale Garrett of Flatwoods, Ky.; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bennett was born on March 18, 1930 in Screven, Georgia, a son of the late Ephriam Bennett and Ruby Dublin Bennett. He was the retired owner of Bennett's Concrete, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He loved fishing, hunting, and farming.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of Huger, S.C.; his mother of Jesup, Ga.; five sons: Terris R. Bennett, Jr. of Huger, S.C.; Warren E. Bennett and wife, Brenda, and Kenneth E. Bennett and wife, Dawn, both of Brunson, Mich.; Noah Rey Bennett and wife, Sandy, of Ladson, S.C.; and Jason Lee Bennett and wife, Erica, of Coldwater, Mich.; four daughters: Theresa K. Bennett Perry and husband, Michael, of Ridgeville, S.C.; Annette Bennett Vaughn and husband, Mike, of Huger, S.C.; Louise Bennett Webb and husband, Gary, of Wartburg, Tenn.; and Carolyn Bennett Garvin and husband, Tommy, of Adams Run, S.C.; four brothers: Garland Mack Bennett, James S. Surviving are his wife of Goose Creek, S.C.; three sons: Richard Wilaby of Charleston, S.C., Larry Wilkes of St. Amant, La., and Jimmy Wilkes of Parish, N.Y.; two daughters: Charlene Frazier of Cross, S.C., and Drusilla Holmes of Tempe, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Holmes was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Holmes.
