DE LA MAZA, Alma
Alma S. De La Maza, 75, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at her residence. She was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, to the late Camelia and Jose' Santana on February 19, 1927. After attending Hunter's College in New York, she worked for the United Fruit Company in the Dominican Republic and also as a teacher at the American School. She worked for Jane Williams Realty and Prudential Real Estate here in Charleston. Mrs. De La Maza was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband, Rafael De La Maza of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Ralph De La Maza of Hialeah, Fla. and Raymond De La Maza of Sunny Isles, Fla.; one daughter, Laura De La Maza of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; a brother, Jose' Santana of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a sister, Angie Jimenez of San Marcos, Tex. A Memorial Mass will be held at Christ Our King Church, Friday, May 10, at 12 noon. MELVIN, Viola
Mrs. Viola Lambright Melvin, 80, of North Charleston, S.C. stepped through the portals of glory Sunday evening, May 5. Born in Charleston to the late James Lambright, Sr. and Wilhelmenia Stephens Lambright on February 3, 1922. Mrs. Melvin was a faithful member of New Charity Baptist Church. She was the wife of James W. Melvin, Sr. and a retiree of the Charleston Air Force Base. Hers was a life of self-less service of others born of heartfelt devotion to God. A brother, Harry Lambright, preceded her in death. Surviving are her husband and children of Charleston: Vivian M. Knight, Marilyn M. (Walter) Goodson, James Stephen Melvin, Jr., Jannifer M. (Marvin) Dancy, Jeraldine M. (Melvin) Heyward and Winifred M. Cooper; brothers, Andrew Lambright (Gloria), Freddie Lambright, (Linda), James Lambright, Jr. (Rachel) of Satellite Beach, Fla. and Benjamin Lambright, Sr. (Barbara) of Avon, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Lillie M. Vereen of Georgetown, S.C. and Rosalee M. Lambright of Kingstree, S.C.; a special daughter, Ms. Victoria D. Abram; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and a host of loving relatives and caring friends. Remains to the church 6 p.m. Thursday. RHODES, Thomas
EDISTO ISLAND - Thomas Lee Rhodes, 79, retired owner and operator of Rhodes Truck Stop in Summerton for many years, died Tuesday at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in Doctors Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Stan LaTorre. Interment will be in Doctors Creek Baptist Church cemetery, directed by the Fred Parker Funeral Home.
Mr. Rhodes was born June 10, 1922 in Walterboro, a son of the late Benjamin Lee Rhodes and Leila Mae Morris Rhodes. He was a member of Edisto Island United Methodist Church and the Omar Shrine Temple. He was a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are a son, Thomas Lee "Dusty" Rhodes, Jr. of Summerton, a daughter, Janice R. Pearce of Charleston, a brother, John B. Rhodes and a sister, Carolyn R. Ramsey both of Walterboro, three grandsons, Thomas Lee Rhodes, III, Austin T. Rhodes and William G. Pearce, Jr. and his devoted friend, Racheal O'Quinn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Crosby Rhodes and two sons, Daniel Jeff Rhodes and George Herman Rhodes.

Theodore Leon Sweet, 44, of North Charleston died on Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Sweet son of the late Jesse and Patricia Sweet was born in Montour Falls, N.Y. He is preceded in death by his brother, Terience Sweet.

DUFFORD, Roberta
CAMERON - Roberta Williams Dufford, 91, of 445 Chestnut St., died Tuesday evening at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2002 at Resurrection Lutheran Church with Pastor Bob Young officiating. Burial in Pine Grove Lutheran Church cemetery.
Mrs. Dufford was born in Norway, the daughter of the late Oscar Tyler Williams and Essie Gue Williams. She was the widow of Julius Philip Dufford. She was a graduate of Norway High School and Winthrop College. She was a retired schoolteacher from the Cameron Public Schools and taught in Lone Star Schools. Mrs. Dufford was a member of the Cameron Garden Club. She was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church, a member of the choir for over 40 years, and taught the Adult Bible School Class for over 40 years.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother, a gifted Sunday School teacher, a faithful member of the choir, and a friend of many. She was a dedicated teacher who loved literature and instilled in others the love of the written and spoken language. Her contributions live on through the students that she taught.
Survivors include, four sons, Julius Philip (Joe) Dufford, Jr., Summerville, Robert Tyler Dufford, Branchville, Milton Williams Dufford, Cameron, Ephraim O'Neal (Neal) Dufford, West Columbia; nine grandchildren, Kelly Jo Robinson, Sumter, Donna Goodwin, Effingham, Susan Lake, Prosperity, Jennifer Smith, Raleigh, N.C., Christie Unthank, West Columbia, Nancy Sumner, Anderson, Philip Dufford, Charleston, Laura Jackson, Clearbrook, Va., and Claire Dufford, Clearbrook, Va.; 17 great-grandchildren.

POORE, Andrew
Andrew James Poore, of Mountain View, Mo., was born July 31, 1963, in Bad Kruz Nach, Germany, and he passed away April 25, 2002, at the age of 38 years.
He was united in marriage to Lorice Moore on June 28, 1986, in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Andrew is preceded in death by his grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Lorice Poore of Mountain View, Mo.; his parents, James E. and Bonny JoAn Poore; three brothers, James Poore of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Todd Poore of Sullivans Island, S.C., and Jerry Poore of Folly Beach, S.C.; four sisters, Jenny Stengel of Seabrook Island, S.C., Ellen Muller of Takoma, Wash., Betty Burris of Isle of Palms, S.C., and Bonnie P. Jones of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

THORPE, Ivy
Ivy I. Thorpe, 67, entered into eternal rest on the evening of May 7, 2002. Mrs. Thorpe was the beloved wife of the late Francis M. Thorpe, Sr. The daughter of Abraham and Mary Kamaka (nee Pahaana). Born on April 4, 1935 on the island of Maui, Hawaii, Mrs. Thorpe met and married
her husband on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, in 1955. Mrs. Thorpe attended the First Baptist Church of Goose Creek where she participated with the Silver Threads senior group. She attended Baptist College. She was a devoted wife, a very loving and giving mother and proud grandmother. She is survived by a daughter, Cathie Thorpe of Goose Creek, S.C.; three sons, Robert K. Thorpe, Kenny Thorpe (Robin) both of Goose Creek, S.C., and J.R. Thorpe of Charleston, S.C.; brother, Clement Kamaka and sister Doreen Saito, both of Hawaii; four grandchildren, Lindsey, Kayla and Cheyenne Thorpe and Michael Snow; and a host of loving family members including Rod Brown. Ms. Roach was retired from POMFLANT in Goose Creek, S.C. She was a member of Christ's Sanctified Holy Church in Hanahan, S.C. Ms. Roach is survived by 3 sons, David Roach of Charleston, S.C., Byron Roach and family of Hanahan, S.C. and Randy Roach and family of Columbia, S.C., also surviving her are 2 brothers, Lindy Lott and Ed Lott both of Dallas, Tx., and 6 grandchildren. sixty years to Mary Jane Bryan of Berea, Ohio. He was the father of five boys, John George of Cleveland, Ohio, Robert James of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Thomas William of Mansfield, Conn., William Bryan of New Haven, Conn. and James Osborn of New York. His wife, sons, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild survive him allaying his greatest fear and marking completion of his proudest accomplishment.
