The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner. Burial, directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, will be in Friendship United Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Flood was born July 11, 1919, at John's Island, S.C., a son of Augustus McDonald Flood, Sr., and Ida Robertson Flood. He was a former member of Moncks Corner Town Council, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moncks Corner Lions Club and Berkeley Masonic Lodge #269 AFM. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moncks Corner. He graduated from Charleston High School, and on March 15, 1936, he went to work for the S.C. Wildlife Department as the one and only game warden for five counties.
Mr. Flood left the wildlife department when the United States entered World War II and he was drafted into the Army. He spent the next five years with an amphibious landing group and was awarded the Army Silver Star for service in both the European and Pacific theaters. He returned home in October of 1945.
Long before the wildlife department had their trademark green trucks, a game warden's work was done on horseback. Mr. Flood has loved horses since childhood, a passion he claims to have inherited from his father. At 11 years old, he won a silver cup at the state steeplechase championships. He's known as Mr. Wildlife in this state. He was one of the firsts, and he knew it all.
Mr. Flood has won numerous awards, including the 1975 Wildlife Conservationist of the Year, and has managed to become somewhat of a legend. All over the state, and all over the world, people have recognized the man in the Stetson hat. Mr. Flood retired in 1983.
