Walter Leroy Tuten, Jr., 40, of Summerville, died Tuesday morning in a Charleston hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 7, 2002, at 11 o'clock in Old Fort Baptist Church. Burial will be in Dorchester Memory Gardens, Summerville.

Mr. Tuten was born on December 28, 1961, in Hampton, S.C., a son of Walter Leroy Tuten, Sr., and Docia Edith Tuten of Summerville. He attended Charles Webb School. He attended Old Fort Baptist Church.
Surviving are, his parents, brother, Charles D. Tuten, Sr., Summerville; niece, Megan Nicole Tuten of Summerville; nephew, Charles Daniel Tuten, Jr., of Summerville.

CROSS - Cash Leverne Sauls, 73, of 238 Limespring Road, Cross, S.C., died Tuesday in a Charleston, S.C., hospital.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, February 7, 2002, at Hope Lutheran Church, Vance, S.C., with Pastor Wayne Young officiating. Burial will be private.
Mr. Sauls was born in Lake City, S.C., a son of the late Joel A. Sauls and Flossie McCutheon Sauls. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a retired business agent with the Local 199 Service Employees International Union. He was a 33rd Degree mason, a member of the Live Oak Hunt Club, and a member of Hope Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Rogers Sauls of the home; son, Jimmy Sauls of Huger; daughters, Jean Adkison and Jane Bell both of Goose Creek; step-daughter, Melissa Dunning of Cross; step-son, John W. Faust of Charlotte; sisters Christine All of Charleston, S.C., and Joyce Redford of Loganville, Ga.; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the church after 2 p.m., Thursday, where the body will be placed in the church for viewing prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, American Cancer Society, or the Outreach Center at Hope Lutheran Church.

HARLEYVILLE - James T. (Jimmy) Grimsley, age 65, of 857 Second Bend Road died suddenly Monday February 4, 2002 at Trident Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church of Harleyville with Rev. Terry Heirs officiating. Burial will follow in the Limestone Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Rogers, widow of A. Everette Rogers, died Sunday, February 3, 2002. Born in Mullins, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Pearly and Annabelle Rogers Wiggins. Mrs. Rogers was a retired nurse and a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was active in Sunset Boulevard Baptist Church Sunshine Club with all her friends as well as the Retired Nurses Association of Palmetto Baptist. She lived at Fountain Side Elder Care Inn, Fountain Inn, S.C., for the late two and a half years.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Ann Rogers and John Brooks of Simpsonville; sons and daughters-in-law, Archie E., Jr., and Carolyn Rogers of Frederick, Md., Charles W. and Gerry Rogers of San Leandro, Calif., and Rufus B. Rogers of Newberry; sister, Jean W. Cox of Augusta, Ga.; brother, Charles Lee Wiggins of Mullins, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
SUTTON, SR., Fred
With deep sadness, we inform you that Clyde Fredrick (Fred) Sutton, Sr., formerly of Charleston, died peacefully at his home in San Lorenzo, Calif., on Wednesday, January 30, 2002, after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. Mr. Sutton was born on January 25, 1925, in Webster Springs, W.Va. He was the son of the late Edward Sutton and Anna Lois Cogar. A devoted husband of 52 years to the late Helen Faye Stack, he is also the beloved father of Mr. C. Fred Sutton, Jr., (Amanda), Mrs. Katherine S. Anderson (Steve) and Mr. Thomas D. Sutton (Sherry), and cherished grandfather of Creta F. Tobey, Champie S. Tobey and Anna K. Tobey, and a sister, Peggy Jones (Elton), Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Sutton was raised and educated in Oakland/Berkeley, Calif. Later earning his Associate Degree in Industrial Drafting in 1972. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1942 until his retirement in 1967, as a Master Chief. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Landsdowne in the Pacific Theater of operations. His ship transported Gen. Umezu and the surrender party to the U.S.S. Missouri where Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and Gen. Douglas MacArthur signed the treaty ending World War II. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He served as an engine room machinist and deep-sea rescue diver. He was a former AAU platform and springboard diving champion, and a certified WSI trainer who taught survival training to U.S. Marines at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Mr. Sutton retired for a second time in 1993 after 26 years as a Powerhouse mechanic at Westvaco Paper Mill. He was a member of Local Union No. 1753, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer for 52 years, and a member of the Masonic Temple. Fred was an avid model train enthusiast and collector. He was a ravenous reader and an amateur astronomer. He was a skilled craftsman of carpentry, leather tooling as well as calligraphy and lettering design. He was also a gentleman in the true definition of the word. His friendship knew not race nor religion. Those who wish to honor his friendship and memory, may do so by making a donation to the San Leandro Historical Railway Society, of which he was a member. Fred's gregarious presence, beautiful smile and generous spirit will forever be missed. In keeping with Mr. Sutton's wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes returned home to the sea.
His family wants to thank his very special friend and companion, Jackie Laffargue, along with the countless number of friends, groups and organizations who shared their support, comfort and wonderful memories with him this past month. His family is sincerely grateful and appreciative to the Kaiser Foundation Hospice and doctors for the compassion and respect given Mr. Sutton during his month of illness.

Robert Taylor McMurray, 64, of Johns Island, S.C., formerly of Longmeadow, Mass., husband of Barbara Russell McMurray, died suddenly on Monday, February 4, 2002. Mr. McMurray was born in North Andover, Mass., the son of Robert McMurray and Lottie Taylor McMurray. He was the retired owner of F.K. Williams Printing Company. He was a graduate of Brooks School in Andover and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME. He was the co-owner of Reliable Property Managers, Seabrook Island, S.C. A 35 year resident of Longmeadow, Mass., his long career in printing started at American Abrasive of Springfield, Mass., Mansir Holdin of Holyoke, Mass. and as owner of F.K. Williams of Agawam, Mass. Mr. McMurray retired in 1998 and moved with his wife Barbara to the Charleston, S.C. area where he co-founded a Property Management Company. Even though he was retired, he couldn't get away from what he liked most, working. He also loved to travel, entertain, play his drums, and be with his grandchildren. Bob was a man of enormous knowledge, talent, and a terrific sense of humor. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife of Seabrook Island, S.C.; two sons, Christopher R. McMurray of Johns Island, S.C. and Andrew R. McMurray and Jennifer of Hartsdale, N.Y.; one daughter, Sarah M. Donahue and James of Hampden, Mass.; two grandchildren, Zachary and Julia McMurray.

SHELTON, Martha
Martha D. Shelton, 81, of North Charleston died Tuesday, February 5, 2002. Born November 17, 1920 in Kent, Washington, she was the daughter of William and Catherine Duncan (nee Boyle). Mrs. Shelton was a Registered Nurse who retired in the 1950s while residing in Del Rio, Tex. Her husband, Noel E. Shelton, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter: Cathy Dales, Summerville, S.C.; three sons: William Shelton, San Diego, Calif.; David Shelton, Adams Run, S.C.; and Craig Shelton, Summerville, S.C.; brother, William Duncan, Seattle, Wash.; sister, Mary Page, Everett, Wash.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chutka was born January 3, 1926 in Greenwich, Conn., the only child of Frederick and Marie Richter Warns. A resident of Charleston since 1954, Louise was retired from Sears where she had worked in several departments. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She was active with her husband in the Lowcountry Corvair Club and had served in numerous positions of leadership. She also has hosted several of the WWII 79th Troop Carrier Sqdn. Reunions both in Charleston and Williamsburg, Va.
Louise is survived by her husband of 52 years, William J. Chutka, her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Robert Holland of Harlem, Ga. and her son, Warren W. Chutka of San Antonio, Tex. Her two grandsons, Douglas A. Holland and Aaron R. Holland also survive her.
