Mrs. Herbert was born December 21, 1924 in Bamberg, S.C., the daughter of William A. Hutto and Madie May Garrett. She was a graduate of Bamberg High School in 1942. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #445.
She is survived by her husband of James Island, three sons: Lester Herbert of Greenville, S.C., Thomas Herbert of Charleston, S.C. and Walter W. Herbert, III of Charleston, S.C.; 2 daughters: Harriett Herbert of Charleston, S.C. and Mary H. Low of Charleston, S.C.; 2 sisters: Mary H. Yeatman of Virginia and Jeanie H. Bellamy of Bamberg, S.C.; one brother: William Hutto of Bronxville, N.Y.; two grandchildren: Alexdra Herbert and Lauren Low.

TUMBLESTON, Elmore
ORANGEBURG - Mr. Elmore Wilson Tumbleston, 82, of 410 Brewton St., Orangeburg, died Saturday morning at the Magnolias in Santee.
The funeral will be 11 AM Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Eutawville with the Rev. John Scott officiating.
Entombment will be at 2:30 PM at Magnolia cemetery in Charleston.
Mr. Tumbleston was born in Yonges Island, S.C. a son of the late Samuel Allison Tumbleston and Hanna Louis Willis. He was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served on the USS Euryale (AS-22) Sub Tender in the Asiatic-South Pacific Theater. He was a retired Machine Shop Foreman from the U.S. Army Depot in Charleston.
Survivors are his wife, Frances Drose Tumbleston of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Ronny and Debbie Tumbleston of Eutawville; grandson, Rodney T. Tumbleston, Jr. of Orangeburg; granddaughter, Janice Jones of Snellville, Ga.; brothers, Julius Tumbleston of Charleston, and Louis Tumbleston of North Charleston; sisters, Dorothy Shulz of Knoxville, Tenn., Etta Mae Clark of Hananhan, and Lena Lowrey of North Charleston.

Born October 22, 1916, in Charleston, S.C., Mr. Christiansen was the son of the late Peter A. and Annie Stucke Christiansen. He was a retired shipfitter with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and formerly employed by Wells Fargo as a mail carrier. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II. Mr. Christiansen is a member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church.
Mr. Christiansen is survived by his wife of Charleston, a daughter Patricia Bozard of Charleston, two granddaughters, Kelly B. Newsom and Leslee B. Ames and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Phillips was born February 2, 1924, in Varnville, SC, a daughter of Henry Hoyt Dowling and Mary Pope Frampton Dowling. She graduated from Memminger High School and Rice Business College.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas E. Phillips, Sr., Charleston; three children, Thomas E. Phillips, Jr., daughter-in-law Virginia Taylor Phillips of Isle of Palms, Henry F. Phillips of Charleston, and Cathy L. Phillips of Charleston; granddaughter Virginia April Phillips of Isle of Palms and Columbia; sister Mary D. Pinckney of Charleston; and two nieces, several great-nieces and nephews.

SMITH, Nancy
CONWAY - Nancy Arthur Smith age 83, died Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Kingston Nursing Center at Conway Hospital.
Mrs. Smith was born August 20, 1918 in Goldsboro, N.C. a daughter of the late Colonel Joseph Dogan and Sarah Michaux Arthur. She attended the Madeira School in McLean, Va. and graduated from Duke University in 1939, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. Mrs. Smith moved to Conway in 1947 where she was an active community volunteer serving the Conway Community Concert Association, as a Board member of the Horry County Memorial Library; American Heart Association; Conway Hospital Ladies Auxiliary; and most significant to her as a member of the Bi-Racial Advisory Committee that helped plan and coordinate the peaceful integration of Conway High School with Whittemore High School. She also tutored in the Conway School System.
Mrs. Smith was always very active in her church. While in Conway, she served as Treasurer and vestry member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. When she moved to Murrells Inlet, she served on the vestry of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pawleys Island, and was also an active volunteer at the Smith Medical Clinic, Camp Baskerville, Pawleys Island which was named for her and her late husband. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Robert Cathcart Smith and a brother: J. Dogan Arthur, Ill.
Surviving are one son: Robert C. Smith, Jr. of Conway; three daughters: Susanne Nash and Gretchen Smith both of Columbia and Rebecca Lovelace of Conway; two brothers: Macon M. Arthur of Litchfield and Robert M. Arthur, M.D., of Richmond, Va.; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday from St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Tripp Jeffords officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at the residence of Mrs. Nancy Smith, 1212 Lakeland Drive.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers for memorials to be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 710 Main Street, Conway, S.C. 29526 or to ETV Endowment of S.C., 401 East Kennedy St., Suite B-1, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302.
