Lyda Gerster Taggart, 76, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., wife of Rex Roger Taggart, M.D., died Thursday, July 25, 2002. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Rex R. Mrs. Taggart was born in Sedalia, MO, a daughter of Roy E. Gerster and Essie Pearl Hall Gerster. She was faithfully supportive of her husband while he served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, in private medical practice, and U.S. Dept. of State - Foreign Service.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; three daughters, Karen Koerner of Isle of Palms, S.C.; Lani Wilson of Houston, Texas; Patty Carr of Lilburn, Ga.; one son, Larry Taggart of Houston, Texas; one sister, Anna Mae Cain of Sedalia, MO; six grandchildren, Tracey Koerner, Jennifer Koerner, Gentry Wilson, Brittany Taggart, Andrew Carr and Elizabeth Carr; and one great-grandchild, Julia Koerner.

BYRUM, SR., J. Harold
J. Harold Byrum, Sr., passed away, July 25, 2002. Born and raised in Anderson, Mr. Byrum was a long time resident of Sullivan's Island, S.C. Mr. Byrum was born October 21, 1921, and was the son of William Marshall and Isabel Eades Byrum.
Mr. Byrum was a World War II Veteran, serving with the Ninth Fighter Command, U.S. Army Air Corps in Assam Province, India, as communications specialist. Mr. Byrum spent his professional career with Southern Bell in the upstate of South Carolina.
Mr. Byrum is survived by his wife of 60 years, Juanita Teasley Byrum, of Sullivan's Island, son, James H. Byrum, Jr., and daughter-in-law, M. Elizabeth Crum of Columbia, and daughter, Jeri B. England of Sullivan's Island; sister, Louise Byrum Birnbaum of Mt. Pleasant, brother, John M. Byrum of Augusta, Ga., and sister and brother-in-law, Janet B. and Marvin W. Wall of Isle of Palms, nieces and nephews and Cooper.
The funeral services will be Sunday afternoon, July 28, 2002, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr's Mount Pleasant Chapel, Saturday from 6 until 8 o'clock.

COLUMBIA - Services for Wilbur Columbus Doggett, 92, of Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2002, at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with entombment to follow. Mr. Doggett widower of Bonnie King Doggett, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002.
Called Bill by his family and friends he was a self-made man. Born to Ira Albert and Elizabeth Elmore Doggett on January 29, 1910, in Choctaw Co., Ala., he was one of 11 children. By age nine, he worked in a sawmill, turning over his wages to his father, as was expected in those days. He also helped out on the family arm. He often talked about this hard work with no regrets, and his entire working life reflects this ethic as one of his strongest attributes. After graduating from Choctaw High School in Silas, Ala., he worked at various jobs until going to Mobile as an employee of International Paper Company. He continued there for 41 years, retiring as Superintendent of the Georgetown Mill. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Georgetown, S.C., and the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth D. Bernardin of Columbia, Garnet D. Aitchison of Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen D. and Herb Schulken, Jr., of Chevy Chase, Md.; son and daughter-in-law, W. Curtis and Peggy B. Doggett of Pawley's Island; grandchildren, John Angelo Bernardin, Jr., of Columbia, Bonnie B. Papa John of Simpsonville, Elizabeth B. Fowble of Columbia, Rhett Aitchison of Columbia, Paul Aitchison of Columbia, Rhonda Ward of Murrells Inlet, Amy Powers of Charlotte and Chad Schulken of Washington, D.C.; 13 great-grandchildren, Mr. Doggett was preceded in death by granddaughter, Paige Doggett.

ST. GEORGE, S.C. - Mattie Lee Carreker, 93, of 256 First Texas Road, St. George died Thursday at the St. George Health Care Center. Ms. Mattie Lee was born July 15, 1909 in Grover, SC a daughter of the late Willie H. Fralix and Laura Zeigler Fralix. She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church and was a retired lunchroom employee St. George Public Schools. She was predeceased by her first husband John Thompson and was the widow of Joe Lee Carreker.

SPEAKS, Ethel
FAIRFAX - Mrs. Ethel Anderson Nix Speaks, widow of B.L. Speaks, died Wednesday evening in the J.E. Harter Nursing Center after an extended illness. She was 94.
Mrs. Speaks was born in Hampton County, October 6, 1907, a daughter of the late Elder James W. Anderson and Minnie Rivers Anderson. She was married
to John Ray Nix until his death. Mrs. Speaks was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfax, and had been employed for many years at Gatlin's Red and White in Fairfax.
Survivors include, one daughter, Joyce N. Crocker, of Allendale. There are three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of SMITH-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME, with burial following in the Bowers cemetery near Brunson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Fairfax.
