Isaac took the opportunities that helped him to grow as an educator. He attended North Carolina College for Negroes in Durham, N.C., Benedict -Allen in Columbia, S.C., State Agricultural and Mechanical College in Orangeburg, S.C.
Isaac was loved by his students and remembered as an excellent teacher that attended many class reunions as their honoree. One class invited and paid for his expenses to their reunion in New York. He was referred to as the "Knot of Knowledge." For many years, he had a knot (about two inches in size) on his head from an accident.
He spent the summer months earning money to support the family building fences, rehabilitating various parts of homes, and building new additions within existing buildings. He worked on repairing minesweepers at Detyens Shipyard Inc. of Mt. Pleasant in the 1960s while teaching. For two summers he worked as a painter in schools of Charleston.
Isaac was addicted to reading. Reading materials could be everywhere. He had a unique style of penmanship that was artful, beautiful, and second to none.

HUTCHINSON, SR., I.
Isaac Moses Hutchinson, Sr., 93, husband of the late Anna Virginia Edwards Hutchinson passed away Thursday, October 3, at Trident Hospital. Born in Charleston, S.C., to the late Isaac Warren and Maude Louise Freeman Hutchinson. As a boy Isaac knew the lessons of pain and disappointment. He fractured his leg and underwent 15 operations and spent time in a wheelchair. He related the time that he was given up to die and that he would never walk again, but a fire in the kitchen got him out of the wheelchair and back to reality.
Isaac loved his mother (a seamstress) and father (a mill wright) and told of the reason for his long life - the fifth commandment - Honor they father and they mother and thy days will be long on the land that the Lord they God gives thee. He and our Mother Anna, attended his mother Maude during her illness with high blood pressure.
As a teenager, he worked at North State Lumber Co. in Charleston where he learned about the lumber industry. He told about loading lumber on schooners in the Charleston Harbor, stacking and grading lumber, and about how he lost the "love knot" ring that his mother had given him. He knew his woods.
He graduated from Avery Normal Institute, considered second to no other school due to its faculty and curriculum. In 1930 as valedictorian of his class, was fluent in Latin, and quite a craftsman in carpentry. There he made the much cherished "buffet" of our family that served as an inspiration to him. He graduated from Knoxville College where many members of his family attended and some of his children. He was one of 40 that graduated in his class. He received his BS degree with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.
Isaac worked in Berkeley, Charleston, and Collecton County Schools. He met our mother while the principal at Bonneau Elementary School. He related the experience of being threatened with death by whites who wanted to crash a school function during the days of segregation. His extended family lived in and around the Bonneau area.
In 1943, Isaac resigned from the Burke Industrial High School after five years of excellent service as its vice principal due to the "good old boy system" within the Negro administration of the school, and went to work as a letter carrier of the US Postal Service.
After WWII, he returned to teaching in 1948 at the urging of the superintendent of schools whom he had gotten to know on his mail route.
