CALDWELL, Bertha
Graduated to her rewards with the Lord Jesus, Bertha Milligan Caldwell, 86, widow of Victor Roy Caldwell, Jr., of James Island, S.C., died Monday, October 7, 2002, at her daughter's residence. Mrs. Caldwell was born November 22, 1915, in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of Charles E. Milligan and Ina Daggett Milligan.
Bertha was a kind, true Christian woman who generously loved her family, church, friends and her community of James Island. Since moving there at the age of nine, she helped her father many, many times crank open the old Wappoo Cut Bridge where he was a bridge tender. She spent lots of time, along with her sisters and brother, discovering the life around the mud flats of the creek and "Uncle Willie's" Plantation. The saltwater life was in her blood. Upon moving to the big red house on Ellis Creek, fishing and crabbing was her way of life providing fresh seafood for her family and friends. Once while out deep-sea fishing with her son, Richard, she caught a large grouper. Just as she was about to bring it into the boat, a large shark bit it in half. That was a story that she loved to tell. It was printed along with a picture in the local paper and later landed her a spot as a contestant on the Bill Cosby's "You Bet Your Life" show in Philadelphia, Pa. After the death of her husband she later moved in with her sister, Ina, on Fort Johnson Road. Always with love, laughter, and spunk, she greeted every day. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends; fishing and crabbing, crocheting, making woodcrafts, and growing hot peppers and tomatoes. Although she will be sadly missed, she will always be remembered as a centerpiece of strength, happily and selflessly giving of her time and talents to anyone in need. Her kind, Christian manner was a source of inspiration to all that knew her. Bertha was an active member of James Island Christian Church. She held a special presence in the lives of her family and her memory will always be a source of strength and comfort.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, sisters, Ina Milligan Murray and Virginia Milligan Fosberry and a brother Arthur Milligan.
Surviving are her three sons, Victor Roy "Buddy" Caldwell, III, and his wife, Gail Elrod Caldwell, of Lexington, S.C., Richard Allan Caldwell, and his wife, Janice Francis Caldwell, and Raymond Bruce Caldwell and his wife, Elizabeth Leary Caldwell of James Island, and her only daughter, Beverly Caldwell Rawls and her husband, Lewis Edward Rawls, Sr., of Charleston, five grandsons, Victor Roy Caldwell, IV, of Irmo, S.C., Richard "Ric" Caldwell, Billy Moorer and Scott Moorer of James Island, and Lewis E. Rawls, Jr., of Charleston and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, October 10, at the James Island Christian Church, 12 Sawgrass Road, James Island, with burial following in the cemetery of St. James Episcopal Church, 1872 Camp Road, James Island, S.C.
