ALLEN, JR., Charles
Charles D. Allen, Jr. (Captain USN Retired), 76, of Charleston, died on 5 October at his residence. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Charles Doughty Allen and Lila Hammett Allen.
He grew up in Garden City, Long Island and attended Princeton University prior to graduating from Yale University in 1946. Later he received a master’s degree in political science from George Washington University.
Serving as a Naval officer for 28 years, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Navy Commendation Medal. His commands included the destroyer USS Goldsborough, the destroyer leader USS Norfolk, and the cruiser USS Belknap. A graduate of the National War College and the Armed Forces Staff College, he also served as an instructor at Brown University.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he was a Senior Vice President at Delex Corporation for ten years, then President of Charles Allen Associates for thirteen years.
He was Chair of the Department of Social Ministries for the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, and had been a Vestry member at Grace Episcopal Church and a member of the Board of Directors of the Low Country Food Bank. A former Senior Warden of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Virginia, he was the first Chair of the Virginia Diocese Committee on the Stewardship of Creation.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Titus of Charleston, his sister, Rachel Fagerburg, Sagamore Beach, MA, his children Margaret Lizaur of Palo Alto, CA, Richard Allen of Boston, MA, Nanc Allen of New York, NY and Diana Waller of Alexandria, VA, and his grandchildren, Anna Lizaur, Ines Lizaur, Addison Waller, and Sarah Allen.
The funeral service will be at 10 o’clock at Grace Episcopal Church on Wednesday the ninth of October.

STURGILL, Virginia
Mrs. Virginia Brown Sturgill, 87, of 158 Dopson Road in Islandton, died Sunday evening in Roper Hospital after an extended illness.
Born June 22, 1915, in Crumpler, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Walter Brown and Nora Edwards Brown. She had retired from the Bata Shoe Company and was a member of the Missionary Baptist Faith. She had moved to Islandton with her late sister, Alma Moore, with whom she had resided for 51 years after the death of her husband, Vance Sturgill.
She is survived by three brothers, Spencer Brown of Crumpler, N.C., Garland Brown of Augusta, Ga., and Burl Brown of Piney Creek, N.C.; one sister, Logean Fox of Darlington, Md.; one niece, Alma Tosten and husband Roy of Rocklege, Fla.; two nephews, Curt Moore and wife Audrey of Rockingham, N.C., and Wayne Moore and wife Judy of Islandton, S.C., as well as many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Freddie and Lake Sturgill; one brother, Vince Brown and two sisters, Dot Weaver and Cashie Moore.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Badgers Funeral Home in Jefferson, N.C., directed by Rev. David Fox, with burial following in the Piney Creek Methodist Church cemetery.

FRANKLIN, John
JACKSONBORO - Command Sergeant Major John Franklin, U.S. Army (Ret.), 81, of 501 Pon Pon Plantation Ave., died Monday, October 7, 2002, at the Beaufort Naval Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock, Thursday, October 10, 2002, in the Jacksonboro Baptist Church with the Reverend Bob Craig officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery, directed by the BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME, Walterboro Chapel.
Mr. Franklin was born May 16, 1921, in Swoyerville, Pa., was a son of the late Robert and Annie Franklin. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1940 until 1948, serving in Iceland and the South Pacific; and also served in the United States Army from 1949 until 1961, having served in Korea and Europe. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the Honorable Service Ribbon. He retired from JP Stevens and was a Presbyterian.
Surviving are, his wife, Jessie Davis Franklin; two sons, John D. Franklin of Summerville; and Greg Franklin of Sumter; four daughters, Jennifer Davis and Barbara Pearce both of Jacksonboro, Faye Przeracki of Myrtle Beach, and Kaye Avant of Walterboro; ten grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

CHAPLIN, JR., Hammie
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Mr. Hammie L. Chaplin, Jr., 81, beloved husband of Annie Bruce Livingston Chaplin, of Courtney Drive, entered into eternal rest Sunday, October 6, 2002 at University Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at Grace United Methodist Church with Dr. James C. Adams and Dr. John M. Younginer, Jr. officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 PM at Nesses cemetery, Nesses, SC, with military honors accorded at the graveside.
Pallbearers will be Ed Wilson, John Monahan, Marc Paquette, S.L. Rutland, Jr., Sid Livingston, and Michael Stone.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship of Believers Sunday School Class.
Mr. Chaplin was born in Prosperity, SC, and lived in North Augusta for the past twenty-nine years, moving from Johnsonville, SC. He was the son of the late Hammie L. Chaplin, Sr. and Susan Quattlebaum Chaplin.
Mr. Chaplin was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in Malta, North Africa, and Southern France.
He graduated from the Citadel in 1941 where he received his B.S. Degree in Physics. He was the second youngest cadet to graduate from the Citadel at age nineteen.
In 1941 he began his career with Santee-Cooper in Moncks Corner, SC. He assisted in starting the first hydroelectric unit for the Lowcountry of South Carolina. During his employment, he became the Manager of Transmission.
From 1966 until 1974 he was the Plant Engineer at Wellman Industries in Johnsonville, SC. There he installed the facility's first nylon and polyester recycling system in South Carolina.
From 1974 until his death, he was Chief Engineer with Industrial Contractors, Inc. in Johnsonville, SC.
Mr. Chaplin was a Registered Professional Engineer and Past President of the Aiken and Florence Chapters of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers. He was Past President of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce and Past President of the Johnsonville Lions Club. He was a Mason and was active for many years with Gideon International.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. There he taught three Sunday school classes, and was a Certified Lay Speaker. He served as Delegate to the Annual Jurisdictional and General Conferences for two terms and was active in the Prison Ministry. He was former Chairman of the Administrative Board at Grace United Methodist Church and Johnsonville United Methodist Church.
He was predeceased by a brother, Langford Chaplin.
Additional survivors include two sons, Hammie L. "Larry" Chaplin, III and his wife Sarah of Simpsonville, SC, Robert Bruce Chaplin, Sr. and his wife Audrey of North Augusta, SC; two daughters, Suzanne "Suzie" Wattenbarger and her husband Tom of Columbia, SC, Jean Ellen Timmons and her husband Charles of North Augusta, SC; a brother, Henry M. "Nick" Chaplin of Nesses, SC; six grandchildren, Shannon Redmond, Casey Chaplin, Robert Chaplin, Jr., Elizabeth Chaplin, Christopher Timmons, Catherine Timmons; two step-grandchildren, Eric Friedman and David Friedman; and one great-grandchild, Haley Redmond.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this Tuesday evening from 6 - 8 PM.

HARDISON, Betty
Mrs. Betty Elizabeth Hardison, wife of Thomas W. Hardison, died October 4, 2002 at their residence in Gallatin, TN. She was 65.
Mrs. Hardison was born in Fairfax, July 1, 1937, a daughter of the late William Edward Pender and Lillie Altman.
Surviving, besides her husband of 46 years are one son, William Hardison and wife Tracy of Gallatin; 3 daughters, Billie Wheeley and husband Allen of Gallatin, Debra Faye Proveaux and husband Steve of Olar, SC, Pattie June Smart and husband Steve of Aiken; one brother, Billy Pender of Santee; one sister, Patsy Fogle of Allendale. There are 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jervey was born October 21, 1913 in Charleston, a son of the late James Postell Jervey and Leila Britton Jervey. He attended Charleston public schools and graduated from Orangeburg High School. He was graduate of the Citadel, Class of 1936, served in the US Army, served in the Pacific Theater in World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was Past Senior Warden of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge, Past Master of the Equality Masonic Lodge, member of the York Rite Masonic Order, the Omar Shrine Temple, the Edisto Shrine Club, the Sons of the American Revolution, VFW and American Legion, a past president and Honorary Lifetime Member of the South Carolina Florist Association and the Association of Citadel Men.
