GUILFORD, Elmer
WALTERBORO - Mr. Elmer James Guilford, 62, of 887 Barracada Road, died Tuesday, at Colleton Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, at the Chapel of the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Crosby officiating. Interment will follow in Live Oak cemetery.
Mr. Guilford was born in Colleton County, a son of the late Ernest Sewell Guilford and Mary Dewitt Guilford. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Walterboro.
Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Norris Smoak of Ruffin, brothers and sisters-in-law, Winston E. and Beth Guilford of Yemassee, Earl M. and Loretta Guilford of Chapin, and Wayne L. and Kay Guilford of Augusta, and the following nieces and nephews, Julie G. and David Hall, Kelly and Erin Hall, Melanie Guilford, Walt and Gina Guilford, Bryan and Megan Guilford, Jennifer G. and Hal Dean, Sloman Dean, Carolyn and Russ Frye, James, Brannon, and Logan Frye, Tina Smoak, Jessica Smoak, Ronnie Hill, Amber Hill, Scott and Joyce Smoak, Alexis and Ashley Smoak, Michele G. and Ron Steve, Crystal G. and Danny Williams and Trevor, Daniel G. KENNEDY, Margaret

Mrs. Kennedy, 82, was born in Waycross, Ga., on January 20, 1920, to the late Walter Louis and Vera Boartfield Poplin. Mrs. Kennedy was a 1937 graduate of North Charleston High School and continued to maintain many close ties with Chicora neighborhood friends throughout her life. She was a charter member of Highland Park Baptist Church and was an active member of the Torch Bearers Sunday School Class. Mrs. Kennedy was a master of traditional southern cuisine and took great pride in the satisfaction of all who sampled. She was a devoted wife and mother, she successfully raised four children, who now say farewell to a life of deserved rest and comfort to the mother they dearly loved.
Mrs. Kennedy was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, William Jennings Kennedy, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Poplin Collins of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; by her three daughters, Jackie Kennedy Buchanan of Hanahan, S.C., Patricia Margaret Kennedy of Miami, Fla., and Cynthia Daun Kennedy Lockerman of Charlotte, N.C.; and one son, William Jennings Kennedy, III, and loving caregiving daughter-in-law, Charlene Sellars Kennedy both of Goose Creek, S.C. She is further survived by her six loving grandchildren, Robin Buchanan Denny and Kelli Buchanan Dumont both of Charleston, S.C., Blayke Prentice Eplay, Joshua Kennedy Lockerman, Eric Richard Lockerman, II, and Ariel Daun Lockerman all of Charlotte, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Logan, Hampton, and Grace Denny and Brady Dumont.

Mr. Grasty, 55, was born in Anderson, S.C., on May 19, 1947, the son of Ivern Eugene Grasty and Ruby Caldwell Grasty. Mr. Grasty was retired from Reeder Industrial.
Surviving are two sons, Jerry E. Grasty of Hanahan, S.C., and Troy M. Grasty of Summerville, S.C.; three sisters, Joyce Bertrum of Moncks Corner, S.C., Carolyn Buliett of Givhans, S.C., and Sandra Grasty of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; two brothers, Melvin Grasty of Ladson, S.C., and Bruce Grasty of Hanahan, S.C.
CONE, Virginia
Virginia Dare Melchers Cone died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, after a brief hospitalization. She is survived by three sons, Franz David Cone of Winston-Salem, N.C., Julien Murray Cone of Charleston, S.C., and John Theodore Cone and his wife Denise of Birmingham, Ala.; grandchildren, Charles Edward and his wife Avie, Christopher Albert and his wife Kelly, and Sara Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Avie Lou and Ian Christopher. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Rayford Cone, Jr., and her grandson Robert David.
She was born January 21, 1908, in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of William Theodore Melchers and Lilly Caroline Welling Melchers. She graduated from Memminger High School.
Her 94 years were filled with love, selfless service and a deep and abiding faith. She was a devoted mother and doting grandmother, a talented artist and writer, an accountant, a faithful member of the Church of the Holy Communion and a dear friend to so many.
Living through two world wars and the depression left a lifelong mark on Virginia. She was frugal and appreciated the value and cost of freedom. She was a walking history book, and delighted in sharing her stories and knowledge with anyone who would listen. Her mind was sharp until her last days and she knew as much about current events as historical ones. She lived life to the fullest and inspired those around her with the joy she took from life. Virginia was loved by all she met and she repaid that love manyfold. She will be greatly missed.
Please join her family and friends for a Celebratioin of Her Life on Thursday, October 17, 2002, at the Church of the Holy Communion. A Requiem Mass will be held at 10 o'clock followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Burial will be in Magnolia cemetery at a later date.

John Vaughn, Jr., 68, of Summerville, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at his residence.
A funeral service will be held, Thursday, October 17, 2002, 3:30 p.m., at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, burial to follow in Carolina Memorial Park.
Born in Greenville County, November 8, 1933, he was the son of the late John Vaughn and Alice Holcombe Vaughn.
Mr. Vaughn was a retired civil service fire fighter. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Vaughn was a life member of the Rifle Club, and the Mason Lodge in Summerville. He was of the Protestant Faith. He was a loving husband, father, son, grandfather and brother.
Survivors include, his wife Barbara Mason Vaughn of Summerville, his mother Alice Holcombe Vaughn, of Belton, three sisters, Hettie Darby of Summerville, Mary Strawn of Summerville, Elizabeth Gambrel of Belton, four brothers, Bobby Holcombe of Leesville, Henry Vaughn of Belton, Thomas Vaughn of Williamston and Roger Vaughn of Belton, one granddaughter, Casey Lynn Lee of Summerville, and a loving little animal by the name of Fancy Girl.

Mr. Goertzen, 57, was born in Grant, Nebraska on February 7, 1945, the son of Isaac and Irene Peterson Goertzen. Mr. Goertzen was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church and a Veteran serving in the United States Navy, retiring as an electronics technician first class. Mr. Goertzen was also an employee of Milcom Systems Corporation.
Surviving are his wife of Ladson, SC; his parents of Kelseyville, CA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip (Robin) Goertzen of Summerville, SC and Brad (MiChong) Goertzen of Huber Heights, OH; a daughter, Christine West of Summerville, SC; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles (Gloria) Goertzen of Port Orchard, WA; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Vida (Paul) Christensen of Kelseyville, CA, Deloris (Ben) Cummins of Denver, CO and Marcella (Arman) Aardal of Oslo, Norway; three grandsons, Timothy, Daniel and Alex of Huber Heights, OH and a granddaughter, Brittnee of Summerville, SC. He is also survived by a life long friend, Syd Blackledge of Asheville, NC and special friends, Joshua, Christopher and Brandon all of Summerville, SC. Mr. Goertzen was preceded in death by a brother, Isaac David Goertzen.

Ethel Nell Stewart Floyd, 62, of Mt. Holly, NJ, died Friday, October 11, 2002.
The funeral will be 1:00 PM Thursday, October 17, 2002, in Lighthouse Tabernacle Church, Green Pond, SC. Burial, directed by HAMILTON'S FUNERAL HOME, will be in Brown cemetery.
Mrs. Floyd was born in Green Pond, SC and was the daughter of Ammie Brown Stewart and the late Rev. Arthur Stewart. She attended the public schools in Colleton County and was a member of First Apostolic Church in Mt. Holly, NJ.
Surviving are: her husband, Louis Floyd of Mt. Holly, NJ; one son, Stu Floyd, Mt. Holly, NJ; her mother Ammie Stewart of Green Pond; three sister, Earnestine Blue, Green Pond, Helen DeVoe (Nathaniel) and Ruth Edmonds (Samuel) of Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Arthur Stewart (Bessie) Selma, NC and Walter Stewart (Linda), Bronx, NY, and two grandchildren, Brianna and Brian.
PHILLIPS, Helen
Helen J. Hawkins Phillips, 86, of Charleston died Monday, October 14 at a local hospital. Born in Chicago, IL to the late Guy and Clara Williams Hawkins. Mrs. Phillips was retired as a clerk for the Board of Education, and a member of Nativity Catholic Church. Mrs. Phillips was a beloved mother and grandmother and will be missed by all. She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Lee Pickering of Wadmalaw Island, a brother, Guy Hawkins of DeMoines, Iowa, two sisters, Catherine Rucker of Capitol Heights, Maryland, and Virginia Williams of O'Humwa Iowa. Also survived by three grandchildren. All services will be private.

Lydia Elizabeth "Jimmie" Mercer Anderson, 90, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Mercer was born in Georgetown on December 30, 1911, a daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Mercer and Sarah Catherine Porter Mercer. She graduated from Andrews High School and attended Georgetown Business School. Mrs. Mercer retired as a sales clerk from Fogel's Department Store. She was a member and former Sunday School teacher at Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are: a daughter, Brenda Anderson Pope and her husband Tommy of Georgetown; a sister, Kathryn Mercer Coutu and her husband Danny of Andrews; two grandchildren, Anthony "Tony" Holland Pope of Summerville and Sara Lynn Pope Greer and her husband Sam of Rock Hill; two great-grandchildren, John Anthony Pope of Summerville and Emily Ruth Greer of Rock Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mercer was predeceased by: her husband, Leslie Clifton Anderson; and four brothers, John Preston Mercer, Christopher C. Mercer, Herbert Edward Mercer, and Thomas Durant Mercer.
Funeral services will be Friday morning, October 18, 2002 at 11 o'clock at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Officiating will be The Rev. Scott Johnson and The Rev. Dennis J. Mardis. Burial will follow in the Churchyard under the direction of the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME.
