JONESVILLE - Geraldine Motts Morris, 72, wife of John C. Morris Sr., of 495 Morris Farm Rd., Jonesville, died at her residence Oct. 27, 2002, at 10:40 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Morris was born in Pacolet on Oct. 10, 1930, a daughter of the late Adam Motts and Ollie Mae Hodge Motts. She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and was retired from Jonesville High School where she worked in the cafeteria.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter and son-in-law, Harriett M. and Steve Porter of Spartanburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, John C. Morris Jr. of Jonesville, Roger E. and Judy Morris of Mooresboro, N.C.; and Terry L. and Carole Morris of Pacolet; a sister, Frances M. Seay of Camaden; three brothers, James E. Motts of Summerville, Beverly M. Motts of Jacksonville and Ronnie L. Motts of Pacolet; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawton Neely, Rev. Joe Stover, Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. LaRue Cook. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home, 495 Morris Farm Rd., Jonesville, and will receive friends in the church social hall following the committal services on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Gilead Baptist Church Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, 748 Gaffney Hwy., Jonesville, SC 29353, or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Harold E. Peay
Harold Eugene Peay, 69, husband of Geraldine Waldrop Peay, of 508 Lakeview Heights, died Oct. 26, 2002, after a sudden illness. Mr. Peay was born in Newberry on May 11, 1933, a son of the late Durwood and Vendor Darby Peay. He was retired from American Fast Print in Spartanburg and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Peay was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Gina Osborne of Union; a son and his wife, Tony and Jennie Peay of Buffalo; two sisters, Frances Willis and Rachel Wallen of Whitmire; a brother, Arron Peay of Whitmire; two grandchildren, Christopher Pierce and Angel Sinclair; three step-grandchildren, Marty Reardon, Michelle Brock and Peggy Gault; and two step-great-grandchildren, Corey and Paige Brock.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. by Rev. Alan Quarels at Union Memorial Gardens with military honors. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Jennie Peay, 130 Whispering Pines Dr., Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Lee Ella Porter
Lee Ella Porter, 85, formerly of 208 Hill St., widow of Gilford Porter Sr., died Oct. 24, 2002, in Oakmont Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mrs. Porter was born in Union County on Sept. 28, 1917, a daughter of the late Willie and Ella Glenn Barnett. She was a homemaker and a member of Red Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Azalee (Ernest) Talley of Union; a son, Gilford (Bye) Porter Jr. of Union; a sister, Annie Bell Wilkes of Passaic, N.J.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Red Hill Baptist Church in Lockhart by the Rev. J.D. McClurkin. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon Wednesday to await the hour of service.
Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Annie Gault Chick
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Annie Gault Chick, 91, of 7507 Hitching Post Lane, widow of James Plummer Chick, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Elizabeth Place. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late James Oliver and Mae Crosby Gault. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John's Methodist Church of Rock Hill.
Surviving are a son, James P. Chick Jr. of Charlotte; two brothers, Harold Gault of Spartanburg and Otis Gault of Union; and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nazareth Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Spartan-burg County, conducted by the Rev. James Ellis Griffith. The Wood Mortuary Inc. has charge of arrangements.
James Donald (Donnie) Fletcher
Donnie Fletcher of Union surrendered to the Lord Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, from injuries received in a car accident. Born in Lockhart on Dec. 8, 1944, he was the son of the late George Arthur Fletcher and Irene Greer Fletcher of Lockhart. He was once married to Sue Watts.
He leaves behind two daughters, Wendy F. Locklear of Greensboro, N.C., and Shannon Fletcher of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Tyler Lane Locklear and Jordan Brooke Locklear of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Donnie Johnson of Union; and his little dog, Eli. Mr. Fletcher was a former member of the South Carolina National Guard-Lockhart unit for many years.
He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, as a department manager. He joins with his mother, father, aunt and uncle, Margaret and (Pee Wee) Dabbs and Uncle Donald Greer and Aunt Evelyn Fletcher as he entered the gates of heaven. He waits for us there as we wait also, what a wonderful day this will be.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Ben Hill. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6-8. The family is at the home of his sister, Judy and Donnie Johnson, 402 Seigler Road, Union.
Memorials may be made to the Dialysis Clinic, Inc. 315 Thompson Blvd., Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Billy Mitchell
Billy (Bill) Mitchell, 71, husband of Paunese Holt Mitchell, of 124 Mitchell Circle, Buffalo, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at 10:50 p.m. at the Brookview Health Care Center in Gaffney. Mr. Mitchell was born in Union County on Feb. 18, 1932, the son of the late I. H. and Lanora Hall Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was self-employed and co-owner of Union Awning and Iron. He was an Army and Air Force veteran. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Jamie Mitchell and Tommy Driggers, both of Union; Dr. Tim Driggers of Newman, Ga. (formerly of Buffalo); two brothers, Bobby Mitchell of Buffalo and George Mitchell of Jonesville; five grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, six step grandchildren, two step great-granddaughters, a number of nieces and nephews and a very special friend, William Smith of Union.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at 3 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Tim Driggers and the Rev. Johnny Burgess. Interment will be in Union Memorial Gardens. His body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9.
Active pallbearers will be Ronnie Knox, Robert Toney, Buck Vinson, Josh Driggers, Matt Hadden and Billy Ray Holt. Honorary pallbearers will be Olin Lee, Bob Gist, Billy Holmes, Ernest Human, Patsy and Henry Johnson, Sandy Ivey, Jenny Malone, Cindy Baldwin, Clyde Rutledge, Dr. John Flood, and Skillet Morris.
Active and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. In liey of flowers memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 308 Linersville Road, P.O. Box 728, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. The family is at the home of his mother-in-law, Lovonia Holt, 134 Buffalo St., Buffalo. The Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
James E. DeZern Jr.
James E. DeZern Jr., 59, of Oakmont Residential Center died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at 11:39 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. DeZern was born in Union County on Nov. 13, 1942, a son of James E. DeZern Sr. and Grace Sprouse DeZern of Jonesville.
He was a member of Lee Road United Methodist Church in Taylors. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a 1964 graduate of Wofford College. He was retired from General Adjustment Bureau as an insurance adjuster.
Surviving in addition to his parents are four daughters: Hope Dezern of Lake Bowen, Marie DeZern, Grace DeZern and Jane DeZern, all of Greenville; a brother, Doug DeZern of Spartanburg and three nieces: Erin DeZern, Lauren DeZern and Caitlin DeZern, all of Spartanburg.
The family is at the home,106 Academy St., Jonesville. Memorials may be made to a church of one's choice or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 10794, Greenville, 29603. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Mildred W. Hyder
Mildred Wade Hyder, 87, of 796 Beltline Road, Union, widow of Glenn Ellis Hyder Sr., died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at 12:20 p.m. in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after several years of declining health. Mrs. Hyder was born in Chester on April 5, 1915, a daughter of the late Edwin William Wade and Belle Waters Wade.
She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and the Adult 3 Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hyder was a graduate of Chester High School and was a retired licensed practical nurse having worked in the offices of Dr. Chance of Chester, Dr. A.P. McElroy, Dr. J.H. Guess, Dr. Gerald D. Fielder and Dr. P.K. Switzer, all of Union.
Surviving are a daughter, Jean Hyder of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Ellis Hyder Jr. and Janet H. Hyder of Cayce; two sisters, Flora Wade Cochran and Nora Wade Lee, both of Chester; three grandchildren, Tracey H. McLemore and her husband, Don, of Irmo, Terri Lynn Hyder and Christopher Glenn Hyder, both of Columbia; two great-grandchildren: Tyler Donavon McLemore and Amber Nichole McLemore; two step-grandsons and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Wayne Cooke and Dr. Joel R. Burke. Burial will be in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Steve Wade, Ben Jolly, Dean Brown, Don Hyder, Cecil Brown and Roger Mitchell.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 796 Beltline Road, Union.
Memorials may be made to the Music Fund of Salem Baptist Church, Tinker's Creek Road, Union, 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
