George A. (Joe) Kennett, 78, husband of Daisy Morrow Kennett of 111 Walker St., Monarch Community, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at 6:50 p.m. in the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta, Ga., after several years of declining health. Mr. Kennett was born in Whitmire on May 17, 1924, a son of the late George Dewey Kennett and Ruthie Mae Toney Kennett.
He was a charter member of Morningside Baptist Church were he had served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and treasurer of the church. Mr. Kennett was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy and was retired from Cone Mills, Carlisle Finishing Plant.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Mary Jo Kennett of the home; a brother, William (Bill) Kennett of Union. Mr. Kennett was predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Jim Kennett, Toney Kennett, Charles Kennett and Pat K. Millwood. The family will be at the home, 111 Walker St., Monarch Community, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Geraldine M. Morris
JONESVILLE - Geraldine Motts Morris, 72, wife of John C. Morris Sr., of 495 Morris Farm Road, Jonesville, died at her residence Oct. 27, 2002, at 10:40 p.m. after an extended illness. Mrs. Morris was born in Pacolet on Oct. 10, 1930, a daughter of the late Adam Motts and Ollie Mae Hodge Motts. She was a member of Gilead Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and was retired from Jonesville High School where she worked in the cafeteria.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter and son-in-law, Harriet M. and Steve Porter of Spartanburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, John C. Morris Jr. of Jonesville, Roger E. and Judy Morris of Mooresboro, N.C.; and Terry L. and Carole Morris of Pacolet; a sister, Frances M. Seay of Camden; three brothers, James E. Motts of Summerville, Beverly M. Motts of Jacksonville and Ronnie L. Motts of Pacolet; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Gilead Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawton Neely, Rev. Joe Stover, Rev. Jerry Lawson and Rev. LaRue Cook. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Neal Morris, Larry Morris, Charles Williams, Rodney Woods, Todd Justus and Billy Motts.
The body will remain at the funeral home and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 495 Morris Farm Road, Jonesville, and will receive friends in the church social hall following the committal services on Wednesday.
Memorials may be made to the Gilead Baptist Church Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, 748 Gaffney Highway, Jonesville, S.C. 29353, or to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Ave., Suite 300, Spartanburg, S.C. 29302. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Michael Jeffrey Allen
SPARTANBURG - Michael Jeffrey (Jeff) Allen, 32, of 113 Burton Road, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003. A Spartanburg native, he was the son of William Conrad and Susie Rogers Allen of Spartanburg. He was a pilot for Concept Packaging, a member of Montgomery Memorial United Methodist Church of Pacolet, and a member of A.O.P.A. (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association).
Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Billy Allen and David Allen, both of Spartanburg; a sister, Wendy Allen of Columbia; and his paternal grandmother, Lena Allen of Spartanburg. Visitation will be tonight from 6-8:30 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Donnan Kenneth Lawson. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the War Birds, P.O. Box 2381, Spartanburg, S.C. 29304. The family is at the home of his parents, 291 Providence Road, Spartanburg. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Ed Foster
A life of love came to a close, Saturday morning, Oct. 25, 2003. God called a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather and a precious, loving and caring uncle, home to be with Him. Ed Foster was born July 16, 1916, to Ella Gist and Sheldon Foster.
He was the last survivor of nine children. He was joined in holy matrimony in the 1930s to the late Jessie Henry, After her death, he married the late Madgelen Poole in 1971. He joined the Red Hill Baptist Church early in life and later moved his membership to the Mount Rowell Baptist Church, but kept spiritual relationship with Red Hill Baptist Church throughout the years. Ed was a faithful member of Mount Rowell, where he served as a deacon and choir member until his health failed.
He was a dedicated member of A P & B Society of Sharon. Ed was educated in Union County public schools and spent all of his life in the community making positive contributions to his fellow man. Retired from the City of Union, Ed was best known for his years of employment with Union Seed and Feed.
A great majority of his friendships were formed on the docks of Union Seed and Feed and continued until his death. He leaves to cherish fond memories a daughter, Minnie (Rufus) Norman, Baltimore, Md.; a great niece, Kyla Jere Thomas, who he reared in his home; five grandchildren, Ann, Patricia, Rufus Jr., Tonya and Rosaland and five great-grandchildren, all of Baltimore, Md.; a god son, Allan Gore, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Four sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
Ed was a proud and determined man. he loved the Lord and his family. His family loved him and will miss him dearly. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Rowell Baptist Church by the Rev. J.D. McCurklin. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James E. DeZern Jr.
James E. DeZern Jr., 59, of Oakmont Residential Center died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at 11:39 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. DeZern was born in Union County on Nov. 13, 1942, a son of James E. DeZern Sr. and Grace Sprouse DeZern of Jonesville. He was a member of Lee Road United Methodist Church in Taylors. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and was a 1964 graduate of Wofford College. He was retired from General Adjustment Bureau as an insurance adjuster.
Surviving in addition to his parents are four daughters: Hope Dezern of Lake Bowen, Marie DeZern, Grace DeZern and Jane DeZern, all of Greenville; a brother, Doug DeZern of Spartanburg and three nieces: Erin DeZern, Lauren DeZern and Caitlin DeZern, all of Spartanburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jonesville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer, the Rev. David Clyburn and the Rev. Mickey Fisher.
Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Henry Sprouse, Steve Sprouse, Gene Sprouse, Steven Sprouse, Mike Luper and Tommy Vinson. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 106 Academy St., Jonesville. Memorials may be made to a church of one's choice or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 10794, Greenville, 29603. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Ruth M. Munsterman
Ruth M. Munsterman, 89, of 619 Santuc Drive, Union, widow of Rudolph K. Munsterman, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 in Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Munsterman was born in Virquoria, Wisc., on July 27, 1914, a daughter of the late Christopher Herbert Mills and Katheryn P. Hunt Mills. She was a charter member of Calvery Lutheran Church of Oroville, Calif., and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and attended Salem Baptist Church in Santuc. Mrs. Munsterman was retired from retail shoe sales. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Leonard Green of Santuc. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Don Leslie, the Rev. Jerry Lawson, and the Rev. Wayne Cooke. The following are asked to sit in a group: employees of Palmetto Hospice and Meta Ward, Johnnie West and Mary Harris. Burial will be at a later date in Sutter, Calif. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salem Baptist Church Organ Fund, Tinker Creek Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
James W. Murphy
James Wiley Murphy, 92, former resident of Union, widower of Aleen Nance Murphy, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at 6:30 a.m. in Magnolias of Gaffney. Mr. Murphy was born in Union County on Oct. 29, 1911, a son of the late James L. and Ada Estes Murphy. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Sam Cain Sunday School Class. He was retired from the City of Union after 22 years of service. Mr. Murphy's favorite hobby was making and repairing clocks.
Surviving are a daughter, Faye Lustig of Sumter; two brothers, Tommy Murphy of Seneca and Wales Murphy of Greenville and a special friend, Bea Webb of Spartanburg. Mr. Murphy was predeceased by a son, Robert Murphy. Graveside services were held at 11 this morning at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Forrest Davis and Mr. Bill Stribling.
The family received friends at the cemetery immediately following the graveside service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Nettie C. Lamb
GREENVILLE Nettie Whitley Clary Lamb, of 31 Sirrine Drive, Greenville, died Oct. 29, 2002. Born and raised in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Ethel Barton and John Cleveland Whitley.
She was married for 25 years to the late James Harold Clary of Gaffney and for 29 years to the late Layton Wilson Lamb of Union. Mrs. Lamb was employed with the public school kindergarten program while living in Gaffney. She loved all children, especially her two grandsons. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Wilkins; her son-in-law, David Horton Wilkins; two grandsons, James and Robert Wilkins; and her sister, Mrs. Wallace Blanton of Cary, N.C. She was predeceased by her sister, Alyce Whitley Westervelt. Graveside services will be today at 3 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery, Gaffney with the Rev. Dr. Baxter Wynn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 847 Cleveland St., Greenville, SC 29601, or the Meyer Center for Special Children, 1132 Rutherford Road, Greenville, SC 29609. The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, has charge of arrangements.
