JOHNSTON, Halyn
Halyn M. Johnston, 78, of Charleston, wife of Thomas T. Johnston, entered into eternal rest on September 29, 2002, at her residence. Born in Poland to the late John and Kamilla Oldzej Malisvewski. Mrs. Johnston was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She will be remembered as being a wonderful wife and mother. Surviving Mrs. Johnston is her husband of the home; six children, Ann (Jack) Comiskey, Mary (Elton) Vogel; Jim (Martha) Johnston, Bill (Pat) Johnston, Tom (Terry) Johnston, Ed (Linda) Johnston; nine grandchildren; and a great grandson. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 PM Monday, September 30, 2002 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel. A Vigil Prayer service will begin at 6 PM. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be at a later date in New York. MINTON, Phyllis
Phyllis A. Minton, 59, of Goose Creek, SC, wife of Ron D. Minton, died Saturday, September 28, 2002 at a local hospital.
Graveside funeral services will be held at Summerville cemetery, Tuesday afternoon, October 1, 2002 at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Minton was born on May 31, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a daughter of Archie Peyton Crisp and Violet May Watson Crisp Murphy. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Ron D. Minton of Goose Creek; mother, Violet Murphy of Lyons, Indiana; one son, Tony Bradley of Raleigh, NC; three daughters, Kim Tapley, Dawn Sharkey, and Melissa Minton, all of Goose Creek; one stepson, Mason Minton of Jacksonville, FL; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

LINNING, Heyward
Heyward Linning, 88, of Summerville, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest at a local Charleston nursing center on Saturday morning, September 28, 2002. Mr. Linning was born in Summerville, SC, on April 30, 1914. He was the son of the late Mr. Benjamin and Mrs. Gertrude Linning. He is survived by 24 nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Vermelle B. Jackson, Ms. Inoraye Thomas, Ms. Ella G. Chisolm, Mr. Willie J. Singleton, Mr. Benjamin Singleton, and Mr. Samuel H. King, Sr.; brother-in-law of Ms. Beulah Linnen; cousin of Mr. James P. STEVENS, John
John MacDonald Stevens, age 41, 7 Duffer's Court, Charleston, died Thursday, September 26, 2002. He was born in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. Mr. Stevens was the beloved son of Shirley Dillane Stevens and the late John Hayden Stevens, the beloved brother of Mark Hayden Stevens and uncle of Alexandra and Suzanne Stevens of Larkspur, Calif., and uncle of Nicholas Stevens of San Francisco, Calif. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter Thurston Stevens. Mr. Stevens was a graduate of Charleston Southern University and attended Webster College and the Cuanahuac Language Institute in Mexico. He was employed as a sales associate with Seigels Wholesale Distributors from 1981 to 1999. Mr. Stevens was a member of Ashley River Baptist Church Singles Ministry. Burial will be private at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church.

BROWN, Margaret

Mrs. Brown was born March 3, 1917, in Wadmalaw Island, S.C., a daughter of Frederick Long Schaffer and Minnie Morrow Heaton Schaffer. She and her husband developed Clear View Subdivision. She was a member of the Women's Club of Charleston, Country Club of Charleston, Riverland Terrace Garden Club, South Carolina Historical Society, Sea Island Republican Women's Club, Ladies Benevolent Society. As Regent of Rebecca Motte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, she was instrumental in the restoration and preservation of the Old Exchange Building, and the establishment of the celebration of Carolina Day on June 28. In addition, she was the Senior Vice President of the National Society Children of the American Revolution, and President of the West Ashley Business and Professional Women. She was a co-founder of Charleston Southern University and was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Campbell in 1994 for outstanding service to South Carolina.
She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Brown Buck and her husband, Edgar A.; two sons, Frederick H. Brown and his wife, Regina, and Edmonds T. Brown, III, and his wife, Anitra all of Charleston, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her son, William Stevens Brown, IV. She is also survived by three sisters, Helen S. Lemon of Charleston, S.C., Olga A. Lilienthal of Charlotte, N.C., and Josephine S. Parmelee of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; one brother, John F. Schaffer of Charleston, S.C.

CANNADY, John
Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of September 28, 2002, John H. "Big John" Cannady. Residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services in J. Mr. Cannady was born May 9, 1923, in Charleston, S.C., the son of Reba Watson Cannady and Walter K. Cannady, Sr. He played at Spartanburg High School for three years and after his father died in 1939, he moved to Owensboro, Ky., to live with an aunt. Colleges were interested and Cannady had his choice. He chose Indiana. "I wanted to go where I thought in my heart was the greatest conference in the world." He spend his early years on both offense and defense - at center and linebacker. He played at Indiana from 1943 to 1946, helping the team win the Big Ten title for the first time in 67 years. He was named All-American in 1945. He was named on of Indiana University's 11 greatest players in 1970.
The first professional football player from Charleston, Mr. Cannady was the New York Giants second round draft pick in 1947 and played from 1947 to 1954. And there was his College All-Star game, the same series that has been played at Soldier Field since 1934. Cannady and his All-Star buddies whipped the Chicago Bears 16-0 in 1947 before 103, 000 fans. He played in the league's Pro Bowl game in 1950 and 1952. He played the first NFL Pro Bowl and was twice named All-Pro in 1951 and 1955.
Big John returned home, to Charleston, and opened a tavern near the waterfront. "Big John's" is named after the man who, in the fall of 1951, was voted the most outstanding player in the NFL.
He was a member of the National Football League Players Association, and Indiana University Members Association. He was named to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991, and to the Post and Courier's list of South Carolina's 100 greatest athletes of the 20th century. He was loved by everyone and helped everyone.
He is survived by one sister, Betty C. Hunter of James Island, S.C.; two nieces, Phyllis H. Cooper and Karen H. Perkins, both of James Island, S.C.; three nephews, and two nieces; several grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Watson Cannady and one nephew, Larry Cannady.
