Winston (Big Jim) Brown, 77, of Harleyville, S.C., died Tuesday, in Trident Medical Center, Charleston, S.C. The funeral will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 28, in House of God. Burial, directed by BROWN AND SON FUNERAL HOME, will be in Dorchester cemetery.
Mr. Brown was born in St. George, S.C., a son of the late Newton and Viola Prince Brown. He was a member of the House of God. He was married
to Deaconess Martha Simpson Brown.
Surviving are, his wife, Martha Brown, of the home, five daughters, Daisey (Herbert) Deas, Cherry (Charles) Pearson of Summerville, S.C., Juanita (Samuel) Lemon of St. George, S.C., Mary (Arthur) Connor of Ridgeville, S.C., Delores (Charles) Felder of Harleyville, S.C., three sons, Charles (Shirley) Brown, Dorchester, S.C., Harold and Willie C. Brown of Harleyville, S.C., four brothers, Ed Brown, Clifford Brown, and Newton Brown of Harleyville, S.C., Willie (Delphine) Brown of Kingston, N.C., four sisters, Malvenia (Preston) Boyd, Joicy (James) Neal, Dora Lee Edwards and Rachael Mack, all of Harleyville, S.C., 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Tyler was born in Charleston, S.C., January 16, 1931, a son of the late Gurvie Mac and Lula Mae Harris Tyler. Mr. Tyler was a member and former Deacon of Portside Baptist Church in North Charleston. Educated in Charleston, Mr. Tyler graduated from Charleston High School and retired as a T.V. technician from Sears-Roebuck Co. After retirement he established and was President of H.E. Tyler Construction Company a prominent home builder in the Charleston area for many years. He was a member of and president elect in 1990 of the Charleston Trident Home Builders Association.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, of Hanahan, S.C., his daughters and spouses, Sandy T. and Danny Douglas, Crystal Cassels-Mann and Douglas Mann, son, Dale Tyler and wife Wilma all of Hanahan, S.C., also surviving are his sister, Erlise Blackburn of Moncks Corner, S.C., four grandchildren, Summer Cassels, Brandon Cassels, Logan Tyler and Shelby Tyler, all of Hanahan, S.C., and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Carrie Williams of North Charleston.

Christopher P. Freeman, of Charleston, SC, died Thursday night, September 26, at his residence. The son of Shirlee A. Roberson of Mt. Pleasant and Alan R. Freeman of Edisto Beach, SC, he was 33.

FRETWELL, Burlington
NEWBERRY, S.C. - Burlington Alexander Burly Fretwell, 83, of 456 Hillbrook Lane, died Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital. A native of Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Charles Burlington and Julia Alexander Fretwell and was the husband of Marjorie Chandler Fretwell. He was a former co-owner and officer of Spartan Grain. He was a 1940 graduate of The Citadel and was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Newberry where he was a lay reader and a vestryman for many years. Mr. Fretwell was a member of the Historic Flat Rock Association, was an avid photographer, and was an antique car enthusiast.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Roslyn Chandler Fretwell of Houston, TX; two sons, Burlington Alexander Fretwell, Jr. and his wife Joanne of Amery, WI, and Stuart Linthicum Fretwell of Greenville, SC; a brother, Frank Fretwell of Moore, SC; a granddaughter, Julie Christine Fretwell of LaCrosse, WI; and a grandson, Jeffrey Alexander Fretwell of Chatham, VA.
Private services will be held.

HARLEYVILLE, S.C. - Mrs. Hazel Mellard Johnson, 82, of 305 White House Pond Road, Harleyville died Friday September 27, 2002 in Trident Medical Center.
Funeral Services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Indian Field United Methodist Church with Pastor J. Wayne Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Good Cheer Sunday School Class. Pallbearers will be Randy Wayne Johnson, Jr., Curtis Johnson, David Johnson, Dallas E. Johnson, III, Mike Prosdocimo, Ralph Peyton, Robert Jennings. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening at Bryant Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson was born February 3, 1920 in Harleyville a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Claudia Sarah Mellard and she was a 1936 graduate of Harleyville High School. A retired seamstress she was an employee of Carolina Girlswear and active member of Indian Field United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Good Cheer Sunday School Class, W.S.C.S., and the Dorcas Club.
Surviving are; 2 sons, Dallas E. (Linda) Johnson, Jr., Ravenel, Randy W. (Judy) Johnson, Summerville, 3 daughters, Claudia J. (Gordon) Doherty, Jewett City, CT, Beverly J. (Gary) Sweetman, Smyrna, DE, Sandra J. (Clark) Floyd, Harleyville, 3 sisters, Julia M. Infinger, St. George, Thelma M. Pulaski, and Hilda M. (Farrell) Connelley, both of Harleyville. 12 Grandchildren, 7 Great-Grandchildren.
DEDDISH, Nancy
Nancy Wittel Deddish, 60, of James Island, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2002 after a brief battle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held in celebration of Nancy’s life on Sunday, September 29, 2002 at 2PM at Harbor View Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are in invited to attend. A lifelong educator with a love of learning, Nancy was a graduate of East Orange High School, East Orange, New Jersey, Denison University in Granville, OH., with a degree in French, and Salve Regina University in Newport, RI., with a Master’s Degree. She was most recently a French teacher with North Charleston High School. She was an active member of the Harbor View Presbyterian Church, the American Association of Teachers of French, and a former member of the Alliance Francaise. Nancy loved to travel, to read, to knit, and to spend time with her family and friends. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed. Surviving her is her husband of 36 years, Capt. Michael R. Deddish, JAGC, USN (Ret), daughter, Laura Deddish Burton and husband William E. Burton, III of Greensboro, NC, daughter Suzanne Elizabeth Deddish of Atlanta, GA., and granddaughter, Sarah Wyeth Burton of Greensboro, NC.

Margaret Johnson Goodman of Hampstead, NC, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at her residence.
She was born July 12, 1930 in Detroit, MI, daughter of the late Albert and Dorothy Eby Johnson.
Mrs. Goodman was a former member of the Belvedere Plantation Ladies Golf Association and Bowling League.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Edward Goodman of the home; two daughters, Cheryl Bonney and husband Robert of Baldwinsville, NY, Susan Goodman of Saugus, MI; son-in-law, Harry Riley of Slatington, PA; grandchildren, David and Michael Bonney, Matthew and Lee Riley, Jamie Monteith, and Christine Casignetti; one sister, Shirley Holcombe of Charleston, SC. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Riley.
