WHITMIRE - Beatrice Alston, 83, of 101 Tyger Road, Whitmire, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Palmetto Richland Memorial in Columbia. A native of the Maybinton Community of Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late James and Carrie R. Hodges. She was a member of Trinity AME Zion Church and a retiree of Louis Rich of Carolina. She was a member of the Home Beneficiary Society and Women's Aid.
Surviving are two brothers, Robert Hodges of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ruben Hodges of Maybinton; five sisters, LeEthel Tucker of Carlisle, Parilee Dawkins, Margaret D. Moorman, and Golden Whitner, all of Maybinton and Elizabeth Gilliam of Santuc; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity AME Zion Church in Maybinton by the Rev. John Hill. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family is at the home, Tyger River Road, Maybinton. Viewing will be today from 2 until 7 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The Whitney Funeral home has charge of arrangements.
Catherine S. Garner
Catherine Sanders Garner, 82, of Oakmont Nursing Home, Union, widow of Archie H. Garner, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at 10:20 pm. in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. Garner was born in Union County on Aug. 5, 1921, a daughter of the late Bryant and Mazie Howell Sanders. She was a member of Philippi Baptist Church. She loved her church and church family, she was a loving mother and grandmother and her children and grandchildren will remember her as the heart of the family. Mrs. Garner was retired from Conso Products.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce G. and Mike Parris of Union and Kathy G. and Ronnie Sappington of Olive Branch, Miss.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Walter H. and Barbara Garner of Union and Alvin L. Garner of York; a sister, Ferol Chalk of Lockhart; a brother, Lee Sanders of Union; five grandchildren, Donna Sinclair of Union, Michael Scott Parris of Union, Kimberly Owens and Amy Turner of Mississippi and Bradley M. Parris of Union; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Garner was predeceased by a grandson, Ron Sappington and a brother, Keith Sanders. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brad Goodale and the Rev. Jesse Bentley. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her daughter, Joyce and Mike Parris, 4204 Jonesville-Lockhart Highway, Union. Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7511, Columbia, S.C. 29202 or to the Philippi Baptist Church Building Fund, 327 Philippi Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379, The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Derra Mae Salter
Derra Mae Salter of 206-C Lipsey Street died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Ms. Salter was born in Union on Feb. 9, 1948 to Ola Mae Rice Salter and the late Richard Salter. She was a homemaker.
Surviving in addition to her mother of the home are a son, James (Donica) Salter of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Janice M. Jeter of Union; three sisters, Tammy Peake and Betty (Jimmy) Woods, both of Union and Marie (Tyronne) Gladney of Newberry; five brothers, Ernest (Joann) Salter, Eddie (Doretha) Salter, Chubby (Victoria) Salter, Willie Salter and Wallace Salter, all of Union; one granddaughter, Jasmine M. Salter of Union; a sister-in-law, Mae Frances Salter of Union; four aunts, two uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Rice Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will be in the St. Paul Society Cemetery. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sarah Jo Stamm
SPARTANBURG - Sarah Josephine (Jo) Free Stamm, 49, of 1139 Edisto Drive, formerly of Camden and Union and Forest City, N.C., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. A native of Rock Hill, she was the daughter of the late James Ward and Evelyn Copeland Free.
Mrs. Stamm was a professional educator for most of the past 27 years. A graduate of Winthrop College with a bachelor's and Master of Music Education degrees, she received an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina, and was enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of South Carolina.
She had most recently been the Principal at Summit Drive Elementary School, Greenville; and was previously the principal at Jonesville Elementary School; assistant principal at Park Hills Elementary School; elementary music teacher at Jesse Boyd Elementary School; choral and elementary music teacher at Chase High School, Proctor Primary, and Alexander Elementary School in Forest City; high school band director and elementary music teacher for Lockhart schools; and band director for Jonesville High School.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, the North Greenville Rotary Club, SCASA, SCSDA, ASCD, and Phi Delta Kappa. Mrs. Stamm was a former Miss Camden and Miss South Carolina contestant. Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Stephen Stamm of the home; a daughter, Laura Katherine Stamm of Spartanburg; a son, Joshua Stephen Stamm of Spartanburg and a brother, Paul Free of Greensboro, N. C.
Visitation will be from 5:30 until 8 p.m. today at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. William H. Waterstradt. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg High School Orchestra Scholarship Fund, 500 Dupre Drive, Spartanburg, S.C. 29303, or to St. John's United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 218, Lugoff, S.C. 29078. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
W. Horace Foster
CHAPIN - William Horace Foster, 88, of 107 White Rock Acres Road, Chapin, widower of Sara Sutton Foster, former residents of Union, died Oct. 31, 2002, at 9:10 a.m. in the Lexington Medical Center. Mr. Foster was born in Whitmire on Jan. 2, 1914, a son of the late Vernon Foster and Maude Scott Foster.
He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church of Jonesville; a member, Past Master and Past Secretary of Prudence Masonic Lodge #139; Past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Hajaz Shrine Temple. He was a graduate of Union High School and attended Clemson University. Mr. Foster was retired from McClunney Construction Co. of Gaffney and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Marines.
Surviving are a son, William R. Foster of Chapin; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Mildred Foster of Cleveland, TN., a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lois and Paul Stewart of Union; four nieces, Pat Brinson and Scotty Pipkin, both of Bonneau, Vonda Marcora of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Faith Murray of Cleveland, Tenn.; four nephews, Donald and Kent Foster, both of Union; Marshall Bright of Inman and Joseph Kuljis of Biloxi, Miss.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Gilmer. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday from noon until 1:30 p.m. The family is at the home of his sister-in-law, Lois and Paul Stewart, 201 Davis St. Union.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church Building Fund c/o Mrs. Warren Little, 473 Bob Little Road, Jonesville, S. C. 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Kate M. LaCoste
COLUMBIA - Kate Miller LaCoste, 103, of Columbia, widow of Frank Robertson LaCoste, died Oct. 31, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. LaCoste was born in Union on Sept. 29, 1899, a daughter of the late Oscar Sam Miller and Annie Bailey Miller.
She had been a resident of Columbia since 1917. Mrs. LaCoste had owned and operated LaCoste Insurance and Real Estate Agency of Columbia for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia since Jan. 1, 1920.
Surviving are two nieces; one nephew; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mamie Dawkins and Bessie Rogers. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Raymond Timmer-man. Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Greenlawn Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Tony Ryan Fox Sr.
FOREST CITY, NC - Tony Ryan Fox, 62, husband of Brenda Wood Fox, of 188 Windy Hill Drive, Forest City, N.C., died Oct. 31, 2002 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Mr. Fox was a son of the late Ralph Jr. and Annie Lou Arrowood Fox and a former resident of Union. He was a former carpenter with Cone Mills.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Tony Ryan Fox Jr. of Rutherfordton, N.C.; and Frankie Fox of Forest City; a daughter, Mrs. Regina Fox Aldridge of the home; two brothers, Kenneth Fox of Union and Joe Fox of Henrietta, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Hewitt of Henrietta, Mrs. Linda Wilbanks of Florida and Jeanette Gibson of Cherryville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Michael Moore, Brandon Fox, Jamie Fox, Jordan Moore, Chris Fox and Jared Fox.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Goode's Creek Baptist Church in Mooresboro, NC by the Rev. Cecil Lovelace, Rev. Ernie Cole and Rev. Lamar Hewitt. Burial will be in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight from 7 until 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen, N.C. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service Sunday. Harrelson Funeral Home of Caroleen has charge of arrangements.
John Graham
SPARTANBURG - John Graham, 73, of 333 Bonnie Brae Drive, Spartanburg, died Nov. 1, 2002, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of the late John Graham Jr. and Adella Bee Caldwell Graham. He was president of Carolina Cash Co., Graham Cash and John Graham Stores. A graduate of Spartanburg High School, he attended Wofford College and was a member of the Wofford College Terrier Club.
Mr. Graham was a member of Southside Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher in the youth and preschool divisions for over 60 years. He was a deacon, serving as chairman for several years, and served on several pastoral search committees, finance, building and grounds, personnel and committee on committees.
Mr. Graham was a member of the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. He served on the Board of Directors of North Greenville Junior College, Spartanburg Bank and Trust, YMCA and Greater Spartanburg Ministries. He was a member of the Palmetto Boy Scouts and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European theater. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Caldwell Graham; his children, John and Alice Graham of Roebuck, Jack and Carol Bishop of Spartanburg, Lindy Graham of Inman, Gregg and Charlene Graham of Spartanburg, and Russ and Kimberly Graham of Greer; and 11 grandchildren, Ben Graham, Patrick Graham, Sally Graham, Jeremy Bishop, Claire Bishop, Brittany Graham, Bradley Graham, Ashton Graham, Greysen Graham, Logan Graham and Lachlan Graham.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by Rev. David Blanton, Rev. Barry Ellis, Rev. Danny Garrett and Dr. Benjamin Littlejohn. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Foundations for the Future, Southside Baptist Church, 316 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family is at the home. Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel has charge of arrangements.
