Mrs. Monette was born May 9, 1941, in Charleston, S.C., the daughter of George M. Canady, Jr., and Evelyn Koenig Canady. She was a graduate of St. Andrews Parish High School and attended Columbia College. She was a member of Asbury-St. James United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Michelle M. Millar of Charleston, S.C.; one son, Neal M. "Marty" Monette and his wife, Celeste of James Island, S.C.; two brothers, George M. (Tex) Canady, III, of Dorchester, S.C., and Brian L. Canady of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Rebekah Lynne Monette, Neal Haynes Monette, Thomas Evan Bussey, Jr., and Caroline Grace Millar.

MANNING, Thomas
Entered into eternal rest, Sunday, September 22, 2002, Thomas Orvin Manning, at his residence in Charleston. The relatives and friends are invited to call J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, between 6 and 8 o'clock, Tuesday evening. The funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel. Burial will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Manning was born September 5, 1936, in Charleston, the son of James Robert and Bevvie Orvin Manning. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Audrey Smoak Manning, his parents, and sister Mary Manning Kirby. He is survived by his sisters, Bevvie Manning Popivchak, Dessie Manning Davis, and Theresa Manning Presnell; and one brother, Robert E. Manning. He is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews to whom he was very dear.
He was a graduate of Murray Vocational High School and earned his B.S. Degree in 1979 from the Baptist College of Charleston (now Charleston Southern University). He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War ear and, later, in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 12 years. He retired from the U.S. Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Metal Inspector after 34 years of service. He continued in this field after his retirement, employed by Soil Consultants, Inc. He also was a part-time teacher with the St. Andrews High School and West Ashley High School.
He will be remembered as a sports enthusiast by the local sports community. He was employed for more than 25 years by the local minor league baseball teams including the White Sox, Rainbows, and the Riverdogs and was the subject of several TV and newspaper articles. He also served on the ticket sales staff for the Citadel basketball and football teams for many years.

SMITH, Hedwig
Hedwig Wilhelmina Uecker Smith, 80, of Awendaw, died Saturday, September 21, 2002, at her daughter's home in Huger. Born August 23, 1922, in Koblenz, Germany, she was the daughter of Louis Benjamin Uecker and Hedwig Uecker (nee Suderland). Mrs. Smith served as a lieutenant and nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II. A sizeable portion of her service in the Army was spent as a nurse on a hospital ship while in the European Theatre. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merwin Hubert Smith, who died May 31, 1998. She is survived by her six children, Louis Smith of Bedford, Texas; Patrick Smith and his wife Ann Cooper Smith of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Paul Smith of Clearwater, Fla.; Carl Smith of Awendaw, S.C.; Hedy Ann Hodge and her husband Alan Hodge of Huger; and Frieda Wynn and her husband Elias Wynn of Hanahan; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, 1204 Middle St., Sullivan's Island, S.C. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends, Tuesday, September 24, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m., with the Rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m., at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1520 Rifle Range Road. Ms. Levine was born January 14, 1926, in Bayonne, N.J., the daughter of Irving Goldberg and Ida Melnick Goldberg. She was a retired artist. She was a member of Synagogue Emanu-El.
She is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth L. Wandelmaier of Mahwah, N.J., Nancy L. Zisk of Oakton, Va., Donna Levine of Fort Worth, Texas, and Julie L. Ellison of Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Martin Goldberg of East Brunswick, N.J.; one sister, Marion G. Blum of Waverly, N.J., and ten grandchildren.

Born July 23, 1912, in Reevesville, S.C., Mrs. Steverson was the daughter of the late Sam and Marie Wimberly Walters. She was a homemaker and a member of Holmes Avenue Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Steverson are a daughter, Betty Easterling and her husband, "Bucky" of N. Charleston, and a son, Roy "Terry" Stevenson of Isle of Palms, two sisters, Belle Shuman of Badham, S.C., and Lillie Mae Utsey of Grover, S.C., a sister-in-law, Dot Walters of St. George and several nieces and nephews.

COTTINGHAM, JR., J.
John B. Cottingham, Jr., 71, died Sunday, September 22, 2002. He was born in Charleston, May 6, 1931, firstborn child of the late John B. Cottingham and Margaret Best Cottingham. After graduating from Bishop England, he attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC on a football scholarship. He graduated summa cum laude, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army in 1953.
John's career included three tours of duty in Germany and two in Saudi Arabia, as well as Viet Nam and Italy. He was decorated with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and seventeen other meritorious awards. In 1983 he retired from military service, an Infantry Colonel. Thereafter, he earned a masters degree from the Citadel, and taught English at Wando High School and Moultrie Middle School in Mount Pleasant.
John married
his beloved wife, Emma Henson, in 1954 on Sullivan's Island. With her, he retired to the Isle of Palms in 1983. He is survived by her and by their five childdren: Alice M. Cottingham of Oak Park, IL; Amalia H. Cottingham of Sawyer, MI; Mellissa A. Phillips of Chesapeake, VA; Nancy J. Buchinski, DVM of Loganville, GA; and John L. Cottingham of Johns Island, SC. Also surviving are his brother, David Cottingham of Brevard, NC, two sisters, Mary Lou McManus of Doraville, GA and Diane Shiver of Isle of Palms, SC, four granddaughters, and four grandsons.
Plans for a memorial service will be announced.
SHOKES, Edward
Edward "Eddie" Christopher Shokes, born January 27, 1920 in Charleston, S.C. entered into eternal rest on September 14, 2002 in Winchester, Va. He was the son of Edward Christopher Shokes, Sr., and Cleo Lynes Shokes of Charleston.
He played basketball and baseball for The High School of Charleston and Duke University. After he served in the Navy in WWII, he played first base for the Cincinnati Reds, and for the last number of years made his home in Winchester, VA.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Shryock Shokes, a daughter, Susan Shokes White, a son, Edward Christopher Shokes, III, and four grandchildren, all of Winchester, Va, one sister, Sarah Shokes Mason of Columbia, S.C. and a nephew and five nieces of Charleston and Columbia. WALTERBORO - Essie Thompson Crosby, 86, died Saturday at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Steve Brown and Rev. Posey Belcher. Interment will be in Live Oak cemetery, directed by the FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.
Mrs. Crosby was born January 5, 1916, in Williamsburg Co., a daughter of the late Oscar L. Thompson and Mattie Hair Thompson. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Ladies' Adult 1 Sunday School Class. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Josiah Crosby.
Surviving are a son, Oscar Josiah Crosby of Summerville; two daughters, Jennett Crosby Pearson of Birmingham, Ala., and Mary Crosby Crabb of Dublin, Ga., a brother, Harry A. Thompson and a sister, Celeste Thompson McDermott, both of Charleston, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
