She is survived by 2 sons, Bill Johnson of Jesup, GA, Chuck Johnson of Charleston, SC; 1 daughter, Kay Johnson Jesup, GA; 1 sister, Virginia Howe of Jesup, GA; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ALTINE, Robert
GEORGETOWN - Robert Mitchell Altine, 50, died Sunday, September 15, 2002, at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta, GA.
Mr. Altine was born in Georgetown on August 11, 1952. He was the adopted son of the late George Altine and Bertha Wright Altine and the biological son of the late Capers West and Etta Mae Lambert West. Mr. Altine grew up on James Island, graduated from James Island High School, and attended college for a year. He was a former employee of S.C. Electric and Gas Company and also worked as a construction pipefitter. Mr. Altine returned to Georgetown in 1992.
Surviving in addition to his parents of James Island are: three daughters, Ashley Poole, Jessica Poole, and Whitney Poole, all of James Island; a brother, Leland Gibson of Barstow, Calif.; seven sisters, May Belle Moore of Bamberg, Faye Hooker of Burton, Toni Teresa Todd of Conway, Diane Simmons of Fayetteville, N.C., Mary J. Howard, Gloria Jordan and Amy Weaver, all of Georgetown; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Capers West, Jr.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at two o'clock in the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME. Officiating will be Rev. Wilton Scruggs. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening, September 17, 2002, from six until eight o'clock.

BARONE, Bartolo
Dr. Bartolo Mariano Barone, 68, husband of Mary Pringle Herrin Barone of Seabrook Island, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002. Dr. Barone was born Tuesday, May 15, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, NY, the son of Bartolo M. and Gertrude Granata Barone. He was a graduate of Georgetown University, Washington, DC, where he received his B.S. and M.D. Dr. Barone completed his residency at Neurological Surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He was a former Chief of Neurology and President of Roper Hospital and Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Francis Xavier Hospital, as well as a consultant neurosurgeon with numerous other hospitals and facilities in the Charleston area. He was on the Board of Commissioners of Roper Hospital, serving as Vice Chairman and Chairman, the Board of Directors, Roper Foundation, serving as Chairman and Vice Chairman, and current Board Chairman of Commun - I - Care, a non-profit organization providing health care to the working poor. Dr. Barone was a member of the Medical Society of South Carolina, past president of the SC Medical Association, Southern Neurological Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, past president of the SC Neurosurgical Society, American College of Surgeons, Carolina Yacht Club, SC Historical Society, a life member of the Navy League of US, Seabrook Island Club, the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's Church, the Board of Directors of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, current Board Chairman of the SC Organ Procurement Agency and the Board of Directors of Project Case. He has authored numerous publications during his career. Dr. Barone was an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Georgetown University, US Naval Hospital, Charleston and Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at MUSC. Surviving are his wife of Seabrook Island; three daughters, Florence Mary Barone of Benzonia, MI, Caroline B. Schultz of Sammamish, WA, Elizabeth B. Luzuriaga of Mt. Pleasant; two stepsons, Dr. Rudolph B. Rustin of Mt. Pleasant, Ralford H. Rustin of Folly Beach; a sister, Anna Maria Barone of Clinton Corners, NY; and 7 grandchildren. She is survived by sons, Bruce Varner of Lebanon, Lukie Varner of Moncks Corner; brother, Ben Hill of Lebanon; sister, Martha Grooms of Lebanon; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.
