BECK, Werner
Werner Beck, MD, 63, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at his residence. Dr. Beck was born in Breslau, Germany, September 10, 1939, a son of Drs. Werner and Ilse Beck. Dr. Beck was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his BA degree in 1961, West Virginia University School of Medicine, his MD in 1965, and his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He was a partner in Lowcountry Internal Medicine and practiced at Trident Hospital and was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan's Island. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at Stella Maris Church. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens cemetery. MATTHEW JONES, SR.
NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Matthew J. Jones, Sr., 84, departed this life Tuesday afternoon September 10, 2002 at the Harborside Rehabilitation & Nursing Center Arden House in Hamden Connecticut.
He was born in Waycross Georgia, September 29, 1917, the son of William Henry Jones and Nellie M. Jones. He spent his childhood and was educated in Waycross Georgia.
He accepted Christ at an early age at Community Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He met and married
his wife, Alcess Prince Jones, on March 4, 1945. Their first son, Matthew Jr. was born in Charleston in 1946. Soon after, Matthew and Alcess moved to New Haven in 1948 and began their life together here. He joined Saint Matthew’s Unison Free Will Baptist Church soon after their arrival.
Brother Jones served as a Trustee, member of the Choir and a member of the Men’s Club over a period of fifty years of Christian service.
He was employed at Pratt Whitney Aircraft as a machinist and retired after over 35 years of service in 1983.
Mr. Jones is survived by sons, Matthew Jones Jr. of Chandler, AZ, William Henry Jones II (Asheer Ben Israel) of Deiona, Israel and Anthony Darrell Jones of New Haven; sisters Helen J. Gaines, Ella J Baugh both of Charleston SC and Della J. King of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
CURVIN K. COUNCIL FUNERAL HOME, 128 Dwight Street, New Haven, CT is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Interment will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park cemetery on Monday, September 16th.

XaXsa Ann Garcia Amancio, 32, wife of Allen Amancio of Goose Creek, S.C., died September 12, 2002. XaXsa was born July 26, 1970, in Arayat, Pampanga, Philippines a daughter of Justiniano M. Sapla and Juanita Balajadia Sapla. She worked as a bartender at the Charleston Club at the Charleston Air Force Base. WALDREP, JR., Alfred
Dr. Alfred Carson "Popi" Waldrep, Jr., husband, father, grandfather, surgeon, fisherman, gardener, and gentleman, passed away on September 13, 2002.
Dr. Waldrep was born in Orange, Texas, on April 17, 1923. As a youth he was close to his family, an avid outdoorsman, and accomplished high school athlete. After working alongside his father in the oilfields of Galveston Bay and rounding up cattle, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana where he met Dorothy Inez Turcan, his one and true love for the next 60 years. He was an award-winning expert fisherman.
While working to pay his tuition in graduate school, he played on the 1945 National Basketball Championship Team for Loyola (N.O.). Dr. Waldrep received many professional honors for his work in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, which included a 22 year military career prior to being invited to help build and expand the MUSC College of Dental Medicine. He served tirelessly until his retirement as Assistant Dean on June 30, 1985. Recognizing his dedication to youth development, Dr. Waldrep was honored for his participation at every level to help develop the James Island YMCA.
His greatest love, and the accomplishment, for which he had the most pride, was that for his family: Dorothy, his wife of 56 years; son, Alfred Carson Waldrep, III, of Charleston; daughter, Deborah Anne of Braxton, Miss., and her husband, Don Ethredge and their daughters Landrie, Alexa, Elise and Tavia; son, Lt. Col Douglas Alan Waldrep, Md., of Washington, D.C., his wife, Heda and their daughters Megan and Caraline; and son Donald J. Waldrep, DMD, MD, of California, and his wife, Lisa.
Dr. Waldrep is the son of the late Alfred and Corene Waldrep. He is survived by his sisters, Perle Dumas of Monroe, La., and Miriam Rowe of Baytown, Texas.

GRESHAM, S.C. - Mrs. LaCross Williams Jones, 82, widow of James H. Carlisle Jones, died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at her residence after an illness.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, September 17, at Soules Chapel cemetery, with Rev. Norman Abernathy and Rev. Frankie Tanner officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service. The services will be directed by SMITH-COLLINS FUNERAL HOME.
Mrs. Jones was born September 12, 1920, in the Woodberry Community in Lower Marion County, a daughter of the late Richard Oscar Williams and the late Alberta Richardson Williams. Mrs. Jones had retired from Home Health Services with the Department of Health and Environmental Control. She was associated with the Marion County Voter Registration, the Office of Economic Opportunity - Headstart Program, and the Brittons Neck Subordinate Grange #629. Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Brittons Neck High School. Mrs. Jones was a member of Nebo Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Jones are five children, T. Wayne Jones and his wife Quinette of Lexington, Gayle Kubala and her husband, S.P. Butch of Columbia, Marsha Springs, and her husband Wayne of Johnsonville, Meita Neeley of Gresham and Jimmy Brant Jones and his wife Beth of Inman; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Calhoun of Conway and Leona Cavanaugh of Baltimore, Md.; and two brothers, Hoyt Williams of Milwaukie, Ore., and Otto Williams of Ft. Worth, Texas.
Mrs. Jones was predeceased by two brothers, Duvall Williams and Cleo Williams and two sisters, Bessie Larrimore and Neta Holden.

She was a graduate of North Charleston High School and an active member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Azalea Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Sandra S. Lines of Madbury, New Hampshire, Mrs. Charlotte S. Myers of North Charleston, S.C., and Mrs. Barbara S. Sanders of Suwanee, Ga. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Surviving also is a sister, Mrs. Edith Jay of James Island, S.C.
