O'STEEN, Wallace

The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Aldo O'Steen are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at 12 o'clock noon. Mr. O'Steen was born on November 10, 1920, in Alma, Ga., the son of the late James and Mae Hall O'Steen. He was a retired C.P.O. from the U.S. Navy and a World War II veteran. He also retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he was a boilermaker foreman. Mr. O'Steen was a member of Aldergate United Methodist Church, the Fleet Reserve Association, a 32nd degree Mason of Carolina Masonic Lodge #375 A.F.M. and a member of the Omar Temple Marching Patrol.
He is survived by his loving wife of Hanahan, S.C.; two daughters, Eve O'Steen Griffin and Karen O'Steen Crosby, both of Hanahan, S.C.; one brother, Peter O'Steen of Hoboken, Ga.; three granddaughters, Shannon Griffin, Allison Crosby and Brittany Crosby, all of Hanahan, S.C.; one grandson, Justin W. Griffin and wife, Rhonda, of Columbia, S.C.; and three great-grandchildren.

WITT, Hank
Entered into eternal rest on September 15, 2002, Diedrich Christian Heinrich "Hank" Witt, Jr., husband of Beverly Willingham Witt and retired Associate Athletic Director of The Citadel, residence, Charleston, S.C. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Witt are invited to attend the funeral service of the former at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at 10:30 o'clock. Mr. Witt was born December 29, 1923, in Charleston, S.C., son of Diedrich Christian Heinrich and Emmadorathea Gehlken Witt. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Mr. Witt served in the U.S. Air Force during W.W.II. He was a graduate of Newberry College where he was inducted in the Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a Past Master and 50 year life member of Solomon Lodge #1 A.F.M.; Past District Deputy Grand Master of 1st Masonic District; 33rd Honoree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Washington Light Infantry.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Willingham Witt of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Denise W. Johnson, and her husband Donnie of Greenville, S.C., and Diedri W. Goudelock of Columbia, S.C., and her husband Rusty; one son, Diedrich C.H. Witt, III, of Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, Robert Witt Johnson, Anna Kay Johnson, Christian Chandler Goudelock, Anne Elise Goudelock, and Hannah Elizabeth Goudelock; one sister, Winifred Witt Cammer, and her husband Jerome, of Bonneau, S.C.

MATTHEW JONES, SR.
NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Matthew J. Jones, Sr., 84, departed this life Tuesday afternoon September 10, 2002 at the Harborside Rehabilitation & Nursing Center Arden House in Hamden Connecticut.
He was born in Waycross Georgia, September 29, 1917, the son of William Henry Jones and Nellie M. Jones. He spent his childhood and was educated in Waycross Georgia.
He accepted Christ at an early age at Community Baptist Church in Charleston, South Carolina. He met and married
his wife, Alcess Prince Jones, on March 4, 1945. Their first son, Matthew Jr. was born in Charleston in 1946. Soon after, Matthew and Alcess moved to New Haven in 1948 and began their life together here. He joined Saint Matthew’s Unison Free Will Baptist Church soon after their arrival.
Brother Jones served as a Trustee, member of the Choir and a member of the Men’s Club over a period of fifty years of Christian service.
He was employed at Pratt Whitney Aircraft as a machinist and retired after over 35 years of service in 1983.
Mr. Jones is survived by sons, Matthew Jones Jr. of Chandler, AZ, William Henry Jones II (Asheer Ben Israel) of Deiona, Israel and Anthony Darrell Jones of New Haven; sisters Helen J. Gaines, Ella J Baugh both of Charleston SC and Della J. King of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Interment will be at Beaverdale Memorial Park cemetery on Monday, September 16th.
BECK, Werner
Werner Beck, MD, 63, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., died Saturday, September 14, 2002, at his residence. Dr. Beck was born in Breslau, Germany, September 10, 1939, a son of Drs. Werner and Ilse Beck. Dr. Beck was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his BA degree in 1961, West Virginia University School of Medicine, his MD in 1965, and his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He was a partner in Lowcountry Internal Medicine and practiced at Trident Hospital and was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, Sullivan's Island. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 17, 2002, at Stella Maris Church. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens cemetery. Mrs. Colley was born August 16, 1914, in Charleston, S.C., one of six children, daughter of George Marion and Clara Folk Stephens. She was a member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, Columbia, S.C., and the church pianist for many years. She was dedicated to her family, and was also known for her beautiful sewing.
She is survived by her daughter, Franke C. Wilson of Charleston, S.C.; two grandsons, John L. Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., and David F. Wilson of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, George M. Stephens, Jr., of Wilmington, N.C., and Joseph F. Stephens of Charleston, S.C.; several nieces and nephews, and her two best friends, Blib Padgett and Dot Horton of Columbia, S.C.

WIGGINS, Essie
Essie Wyndham Shealy Wiggins, 91, of Macedonia, a retired Santee River Wool Combing employee, died Saturday at a Moncks Corner nursing home.
The funeral will be at 3 PM, Tuesday, at Oak Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Russell Funeral Chapel, will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Wiggins was born September 12, 1911 in Berkeley County, a daughter of Charlie Wyndham and Maggie Hood Wyndham. She was a member of Oak Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was the widow of Sidney Shealy.
Surviving are her husband, Donald Wiggins of Macedonia; three sons, Charles Shealy and David Shealy, both of St. Stephen, Jerry Shealy of Florence; seven daughters, Ruby Krill and Sidney Lee, both of Summerville, Lois Almers and Olene Jernigan, both of St. Stephen, Frances Wyndham of Bonneau, Lucy George of Valdosta, GA, Genole Kemmerlin of Cheraw; twin sister, Bessie Gaskins of Macedonia; a number of grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

WALTERBORO - Mrs. Irene Davis Finley, 84, of 210 Wilson Street, Walterboro, died Sunday, September 15, 2002, at the Colleton Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held eleven o'clock Monday, September 16, 2002, in the Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel, with Reverend Wallace W. King and Reverend Brian King officiating. Interment will follow in the Live Oak cemetery in Walterboro.
Mrs. Finley was born June 10, 1918 in Coleton County and was a daughter of the late Julius Edward Davis and Alice Davis Davis. She was a retired seamstress from the Walterboro Dress Plant and was a member of the Walterboro Church of God. She was the widow of Reverend Laudie Darion "L.D." Finley.
Surviving are her son, Larry Darion Finley of Savannah, GA, and Jack Franklin Finley of Walterboro; a sister, Jessie Franklin of Walterboro; a brother, Edgar Davis of Walterboro; five grandchildren, Cheryl Moore, Douglas Finley and Lonnie Finley, all of Savannah, GA, Brian Finley and Kurt Finley, all of Walterboro; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bennett was born in Colleton County and was a daughter of the Elijah and Della Colson Craven. She was a member of Evergreen Christian Church and was a former Deaconess of the church. She was the widow of John Wesley Bennett.
Surviving are sons, Thomas Bennett, Olin Bennett, and Roy Bennett, all of Walterboro, and J.W. Bennett of Ruffin; daughter, Thelma Dukes of Orangeburg; brother, Elijah Craven, Jr. of Orangeburg; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 8 brothers and sisters.
