MCLEOD, Patrick
Patrick Thomas McLeod, infant son of Michael McLeod and Lisa Rooney McLeod, of Summerville, died Sunday, September 8, 2002, at a Charleston hospital.
Funeral services will be held at Ferndale Baptist Church, Tuesday afternoon, September 10, 2002, at 2 o'clock. Burial will be held at Summerville cemetery.
Survivors include his parents, Michael and Lisa McLeod of Summerville; his maternal grandparents, Jim and Dianne Rooney, of Summerville; maternal great-grandparents, Sam and Tina Strickland of North Charleston, S.C.; maternal great-grandmother, Doris J. Rooney of Valparaiso, Fla.; his paternal grandfather, Edward J. McLeod and his wife, Barbara McLeod, both of Charleston; his great-aunt, Linda Reid of Charleston, S.C.; his aunt, uncle and cousin, Kimberly and Kee Farmer and their son, Tyler Farmer, all of Summerville; and his uncle, Jimmy Rooney of Summerville and Jimmy's fiancée, Rachel Cook of Goose Creek, S.C.

ALMERS, Virginia
Virginia May Almers, 81, wife of Willie J. Almers of Charleston died Sunday, September 8, at a local hospital. Born in Charleston to the late Daniel E. Murrill, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth Whitehurst Murrill. Mrs. Almers was a graduate of Memminger High School and Rice Business College. She was a member of the Quis Qui Auxiliary, and attended Charleston First Baptist Church. She retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a public relations officer. Mrs. Almers is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wille J. Almers, three sons, William M. Almers and his wife Kathy of Florence, S.C., Daniel A. Almers and his wife Carolyn of Charlotte, N.C., and David H. Almers and his wife Zina of Hillsboro, N.C. Also a brother, Daniel E. Murrill, Jr., of Mt. Pleasant, and seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends, 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 10, at Mcalister-Smith Downtown Chapel. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 11, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Holy Cross cemetery. WALLING, Mary
Mary Nadine Thomas Walling, 81, of Bolentown Community, Cope, S.C., and Maggie Valley, N.C., died Sunday at her home in N.C.
Services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 11, at Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church, Cope, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at THOMPSON FUNERAL HOME IN ORANGEBURG, S.C. Survivors include, two daughters, Mary Annette Smith of Maggie Valley, N.C., and Mrs. Ted (Julia Marie) Brooks of Cope; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Henry and Beverly Walling of Cope and Thomas Wayne and Theresa Walling of Leesville; sister, Margariet Duncan of Beaufort; brother, Henry "Son" Thomas of Santee; ten grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church - Kitchen Fund, 1066 Bonnette Road, Cope, S.C. 29038, or to Maggie First Baptist, Soco Road, Maggie Valley, N.C. 28751.

SWEAT, Samuel
Samuel Jackson Sweat, 79, of Summerville, widower of Evelyn Hill Sweat, died Monday morning in a local nursing home.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at 11 o'clock in James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Burial will be in Rudd Branch cemetery in Lebanon.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 8 o'clock this evening.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 2331, Columbia, S.C. 29202.
Mr. Sweat was born on October 21, 1922, in Summerville, a son of the late Calvin Willis Sweat, and Mattie Sweat Sweat. He attended Summerville schools. He was a retired supervisor with the South Carolina Highway Department. He was a member of Boone Hill United Methodist Church.
Survivors are, two step-daughters, Irene Hill of Lebanon, Nell Eadie of Givhans; one step-son, Herman Hill of Lebanon; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Myrtle Chapman of Charleston, Valeria Smoak of Summerville, and Elizabeth Jolly of Summerville.

Josephine Hare Wilkes, 91, of Charleston, SC entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 8, 2002. Josephine Hare Wilkes was the mother of Benjamin Wilkes, Jr. of Summerville, SC and Stephanie Wilkes Schott of Sidney Center, NY.
There will be no local services and a burial service will be held at a later date in Sidney Center, NY. The Wilkes family is being assisted by THE CREMATION CENTER OF CHARLESTON.

STEELE, Maudine
Entered into eternal rest on the evening of September 6, 2002, Maudine R. "Dinne" Steele, wife of William Joseph Steele, Sr. Residence, Harlingen, TX. Mrs. Steele was born in Rock Hill, S.C. The daughter of Lottie Mae West Rainey and the late Robert H. Rainey. She was a Lutheran.
Surviving are her husband, mother, two daughters, Dana L. Steele of James Island, S.C., and Robin S. Williams of Canaday, S.C.; one son, William Joseph Steele, Jr., of James Island, S.C.; one brother, Robert Rainey of Rock Hill, S.C., and four granddaughters.

HEMPHILL, III, Robert
Robert Hardee Hemphill, III, husband of Elaine Vincent Hemphill of Summerville, SC, died Saturday, September 7, 2002, at a local hospital.
Graveside funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery, Monday afternoon, September 9, 2002 at 3:30 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Francis Willis SPCA, PO Box 1116 Summerville, SC 29484.
Mr. Hemphill was born in Charleston, SC on March 4, 1925, a son of Robert H. Hemphill, Jr. and Mary Barnwell Hemphill. He attended Crafts School of Charleston, Summerville High School, The Citadel, and the University of South Carolina. He was the retired owner of Hemphill Agency.
He was a World War II Veteran, having served as a pilot and was one of the first officers assigned to Frankfort Airfield in Germany. He was a member of the Caterpillar Club. He served as president of the National Association of Real Estate Boards. he was a member of the Dorchester County Aeronautics Board and president of the Summerville Rotary Club. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Vincent Hemphill of Summerville; daughters, Marshall Hemphill Huggins of Summerville, Missy Hemphill Hudson and son-in-law, William J. Hudson of Summerville; granddaughters, Melissa Ann Hudson, Elaine Vincent Huggins, Robyn Alden Huggins, Lauren Hemphill Hudson, all of Summerville.

PHILLIPS, Frances
KINGSTREE - Frances Nexsen Phillips, widow of Jack Phillips, died Saturday in a Kingstree nursing home.
Mrs. Phillips was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late James Alton and Frances Burrows Nexsen. She attended Williamsburg County schools and graduated from the MUSC School of Nursing. Mrs. Phillips was a retired nurse, having worked in hospitals in Kingstree and Lake City and also the Kingstree Nursing Facility. She served in the Army in Germany as a WAC nurse. Mrs. Phillips attended the Kingstree Second Baptist Church. She was first married to the late Ralston Matthews and was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances P. Hayes.
Surviving are three sisters, Dorothy Quattlebaum of Rock Hill, Sylvia Nexsen of Kingstree, Jimmie Alice Miller of Salters; two brothers, David Nexsen of Cades, Thomas R. Nexsen of Kingstree; granddaughter, Julia Louise Hayes of Cheraw; son-in-law, Julian Ray Hayes of Cheraw; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Monday at the graveside at Kingstree Memorial Gardens, directed by WILLIAMSBURG FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7 - 9 PM.
