AURORA, ILL. - Vonnie Ree Johnson, 66, of Aurora, Ill. died Oct. 30, 2002. She was born in Union County Aug. 15, 1936, a daughter of the late Willie and Rebecca Sims Johnson. She was a former employee of National Metal Wares Inc. of Aurora, Ill. She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Surviving are six sisters, Lettie Ann (Leroy) Gibson of Santuc, Loretta Sims of Detroit, Mich.; Rose (John) Tucker, Gloria B. Jeter, Mary (Arthur) Tucker and Alice Pearl McBeth, all of Carlisle; 14 nieces; 16 nephews; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Whitney Funeral Home by Rev. Brady Boyd. Burial will be in Hills Cemetery in Carlisle. Visitation will be at the Whitney Funeral Home until 7 p.m. today.
The family is at the home of Lettie Ann (Leroy) Gibson, 2278 Santuc Carlisle Highway. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Martha J. Strom
Martha Louise Jones Strom, 85, wife of Samuel T. Strom of 117 Lakeside Drive, died at her home Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at 8:30 p. m. Mrs. Strom was born in Tempe, Ga., on Oct. 1, 1917, a daughter of the late Daniel Lynn Braxton Jones and Mattilu White Jones.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union since 1946 where she taught Sunday School for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Chancel Choir and was former W. M.U. Director and former Union County Baptist Association W. M. U. Director. She was past president of the Union County Girl Scout Council, past president of Union Music Club and State Federation Officer, Union County Beautification Chair-man, March of Dimes Chairman, past president of the Third Monday Book Club, past Regent of Fairforest D. A. R., former member of the Junior Charity League, Salvation Army Board, Colonial Dames, 17th Cen-tury, Anthony Hampton Chapter of Spartanburg.
She served on the Friends of the Library Board and was a member of the Union Lioness Club. Mrs. Strom was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women (now Valdosta State University) and did graduate studies at Duke University and the University of South Carolina. She taught in the public schools of Georgia and South Carolina.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn Strom Collins and her husband, Andrew, of St. Paul, Minn. and Beth Strom of Lexington, Ky; a son and daughter-in-law, Thad Strom and his wife, Sandra, of Union; a sister, Elizabeth J. Lashley of Young Harris, Ga.; a brother, Wiley A. Jones of Lafayette, Ind. and five grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Collins of St. Paul, Minn.; Andrew Strom Collins of Rock Island, Ill. Trey Strom and Trevor Strom, both of Union and Claire Elizabeth Paige Strom of Lexington, Ky.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Clay Howerton. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Drew Collins, Trey Strom, Trevor Strom, Tommy Lashley, Joe Lashley and Lynn Jones.
The following are asked to assemble at the church today at 2:15 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the Sam Cain Sunday School Class, Bobby Brown, Keith Davis, Ernest Richardson, Earl Byran, Harold Kirby, J. C. Bryan, Doug Lawing, Gene Logan, W. C. Bennett, Felder Meador, Maurice Gregory, Charley Hughes, Jack Wilburn, and Bob Watts. Members of the Bethany School School Class are asked to sit in a group.
The family will receive friends today from 1 until 2:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, P.O. Box 352, Newberry, S.C., 29108-0352 or to the First Baptist Church for the Martha J. Strom Memorial Fund, 405 E. Main St., Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 117 Lakeside Drive. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Hattie B. Thacker
WHITMIRE - Hattie B. Suber Thacker, 89, of Whitmire, died Oct. 31, 2002, at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Thacker was a daughter of the late Johnny and Minnie Suber. She was a member of the Seekwell Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Rev. John D. (Ramonia) Chaplin of Maryland; nephews, Levi (Mabel) Chaplin, Joseph (Adria) Chaplin, Preston (Katherine) Suber of Maryland, Acey (Ethel) Suber, Willie (Debra) Suber, and Clifton Suber of South Carolina; three nieces, Martha (Clifton Eubanks, Minnie Suber of South Carolina and Alma Lark of Washington, D.C.; a sister-in-law, Lillie Mae Suber Watson of Maryland; and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at the Seekwell Baptist Church in Maybinton. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. to await the hour of service. Visitation will be until 7 p.m. today at the Hunter Funeral Home in Whitmire. Hunter Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
Mobley Jeter
A well-known Union businessman died this morning. Mobley Lewis Jeter, 77, of Union, widower of Frances Bradley (Cootie) Jeter, died at 5:24 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Mr. Jeter was born in Union on Aug. 18, 1925, a son of the late John Mobley Jeter and Louise McKissick Jeter.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had served as deacon and as long as his health permitted, and was an active member of the Net Berry Sunday School Class. Mr. Jeter was a graduate of Union High School and attended Clemson College. He was retired owner of Union Automotive Parts and founder of the Sealtest Dairy of Union.
Mr. Jeter was a member of the Union Rotary Club, Union Elks Lodge and had served on the board of directors of Union Federal Savings and Loans, now Provident Community Bank. He was a former state highway commissioner for three-county district and during his career, he served as personel director of Torrington Co., Tyger River Plant.
Mr. Jeter is survived by a daughter, Lillian Jeter of Melbourne, Australia; a son, Albert Lewis (Al) Jeter of Spartanburg; a sister, Louise Jeter O'Dell of Union; and four granddaughters. The family is at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jack O'Dell, 701 E. Main St. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Troy L. Jones Sr.
JONESVILLE - Troy L. Jones Sr., 58, of Jonesville, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003. Mr. Jones was born June 6, 1945, a son of the late Arthur and Cassie Jones of Cox, Ga. He was a retired firefighter for the City of Hartford, Conn., and a member of the Hartford Phoenix Society. He also was a former employee of Dunbar Armed Security and was employed at Timken & Co. in Union.
Surviving are his wife, Marion L. Jones of Jonesville; a daughter, Travata M. Jones-Knight of Hartford, Conn.; a son, Lawrence V. and wife, Olivia T. Jones of Hartford, Conn.; five grandchildren, Brandon Knight, Brain Knight, Jamarr Jones, Brendon White Cloud and Myiesha Richardson, all of Hartford, Conn.; a mother-in-law, Ethel Glenn of Jonesville; two goddaughters, Earlene Kershaw of Union and Andrea Johnson of Richmond, Va.
Private funeral services will be held Tuesda, at 2 p.m. at Gibson & Brown Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at a later date. The family will receive friends at the home. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Christopher C. Vaughan
Christopher Columbus (C.C.) Vaughan, 88, husband of Bertie Aileen Vaughn Vaughan, formerly of 133 Brown's Creek Church Road, Union, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a brief illness. Mr. Vaughan was born in Union, Dec. 24, 1914, a son of the late Isaac Smith Vaughan and Lillian Aileen Harris. He was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant and was a member of Brown's Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Thomas Bobo, Joyce and Twig Adams, and Rita and Timmy Dean Sanders, all of Union; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Barbara Vaughan, Larry and Sue Vaughan, and Chris and Pam Vaughan, all of Union; a sister, Thelma Ivey of Union; two brothers, Bill Morris of Union and Pete Ivey of Union; 13 grandchildren, Shelia Mize, Angie Davis, Tracy Gainer, Renee Adams, Melissa McBride, Deanna Green, Timmy Vaughan, Jamie Vaughan, Brooke Vaughan, Cory Vaughan, Nikkie Sanders and Cassie Sanders, and Brad Clark, reared in the home; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Vaughan was predeceased by a son, Floyd Vaughan, two grandchildren, Rickey Vaughan, and Pam Gregory; a sister, Ella Mae McAbee and two brothers, Frank Vaughan and J. M. Morris. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today at Brown's Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Blalock. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tommy Adams, Brad Clark, Cory Vaughan, Ronnie Craig, Matthew Gregory and Jessie Gregory. The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7 until 9 and was placed in the church at noon today to await the hour of service.
Memorials may be made to Brown's Creek Baptist Church, Family Life Center, 118 Brown's Creek Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Twig Adams, 820 Brown's Creek Church Road, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
Thomas E. Woodard
CHANTILLY, Va. - Thomas E. Woodard, 47, deputy project manager CACI, in Chantilly, Va. died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Malcolm Grow Hospital, Andrews Air Force Base. He was born and reared in Union, received his public school education in Union County schools and later attend Georgia Military College. He left Union and joined the U.S. Army to make a career, serving 21 years and retiring as a master sergeant in 1995.
In his tour of duty he distinguished himself with many honors and awards and held various jobs in his civilian career. He worked as a coordinator of field engineer with the Defense Information Systems Agency; Chief of the Telecommunication Operations Section, Fort Ritchie, Md.; Special Security Group, Fort Meade, Md.; instructor at Fort Gordon, Ga.; a recruiter and as deputy project manager , CACI Inc., Chantilly, Va.
The family will receive family and friends for viewing at St. Paul Baptist Church in Union from 2 until 3 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will follow immediately at 3 p.m. with the Rev. A.L. Bracket officiating. Internment will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery in Union.
Survivors include:his wife, Valerie Waller Woodard of Clinton, Md.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman Woodard; a brother, Russell (Yvonne) Woodard of Greensboro, N.C.; sisters, Katherine Bowyer of Greenwood, Vanessa (Robert Sr.) Sartor of Jonesville, Loretta (Earl) Wilkerson, of Memphis, Tenn., Ruby Jean Shelton; and a host of relatives and friends. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Clara Smith Wright
SPINDALE, N.C. - Clara Lillian Smith Wright, 82, of 306 Alabama St., Spindale, N.C., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, in White Oak Manor. Mrs. Wright was born May 5, 1921, in Union. She was a retired weaver from Hatch Mills and a member of Spindale United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Dianne Gibson of Spindale, N.C., and Elaine Woods of Rock Hill; a son, Wilson Wright of Rutherfordton, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Lee Allen of Abbeville, Lillie Mae Scruggs of Gaffney and Alien Smith of Union; and a brother, William Smith of Union; six grandchildren and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wright; her parents, Wylie and Lois West Smith; a son, Ricky Wright; a brother, Jimmy Ray Smith; and a sister, Juanita Scruggs. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Spindale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gerald Davis. Burial will be in Spindale City Cemetery.
Visitation is tonight from 6:30-8:30 at Crowe's Funeral Home in Rutherfordton, N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Crowe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
