POWERS, Virginia
SUMTER, S.C. - Virginia Catherine Newman Powers, 81, wife of George A. Powers, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at a local nursing center.
Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Fred A. Newman and the late Meta N. Newman.
Mrs. Powers was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church where she served as Church Historian, Circle Chairman, Circle Treasurer, Columbia Friendship Circle Chairman, and Leader of the Young At Heart. She was a member of Sumter Chapter #188 Order of the Eastern Star, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the S.C. Genealogical and Historical Research Society and Sumter County Friends of the Museum. She was a member of the U.S. Navy and actively served during World War II. She retired from Civil Service as Chief of Defense Property Disposal Office for Ft. Jackson and Shaw AFB.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; two sons, Dusty Powers of Hampstead, N.C., and Ronald S. Powers of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Donna P. Rivers and her husband, J.T. "Buddy" Rivers, III, of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne Sharp Powers of Mt. Pleasant; four grandchildren, Catherine Bryant Powers, John Townsend Rivers IV, Walter Stanley Powers and Nicholas Walker Powers.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde F. Newman, Sr., and David E. Newman; two sisters, Doris Folsom Thomas and Madlyn N. Waynick.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Concord Presbyterian Church with Rev. William Albert officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, at the ELMORE-HILL-MCCREIGHT FUNERAL HOME and other times at the home.

ISLANDTON - Mrs. Verta Ruth Dopson, 80, of 198 Dopson Road, died Thursday at Colleton County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday at Adnah United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, directed by the Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dopson was born in Colleton County, a daughter of the late Emmett E. Dopson and Sallie Rentz Dopson. She was a retired seamstress and was a member of Adnah United Methodist Church. She was a member of Community Chapter #206, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Eddie H. Dopson; two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Walter Thompson and Judy and Wayne Moore, all of Islandton; a son, Eddie R. "Bobby" Dopson and his wife Frieda of Islandton; a sister, Sadie Caldwell of Walterboro; 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

HOLLY HILL Mrs. Mary Ellen Cubbage Risher, 64, of 479 White Sands Rd., Holly Hill, formerly of Harleyville, died Thursday at her residence.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Saturday at AVINGER FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Barry Brinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel UMC cemetery.
Mrs. Risher was born in Alcolu a daughter of the late Ben Braxton and Ola Grace Cubbage. She was a security guard at Greenwood Mills prior to the plant closing and a former employee of Ronnie’s BP. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Grace Cooper of Holly Hill; son, Ben Risher, Jr. of Holly Hill; sisters, Minnie Lee Bradham of Chapin, Mittie Bell McCutcheon of Ridgeville, and Edna Rudd of Sumter; brother, Abie Cubbage of Alcolu; seven grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ollie Aiken Fletcher, 95, formerly of St. George, died Wednesday, September 11, 2002, in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Fletcher was born, November 23, 1906, in St. George, S.C., a daughter of the late Saxon Aiken and Mrs. Sarah Ann Hill Aiken. She attended the public schools of Dorchester County and was a lifelong member of the Good Hope Baptist Church and the Israel Baptist Church of Washington, D.C.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard Fletcher of Washington, D.C., three daughters, Joan Henry, Helen Ford, and Joyce Leland, all of Washington, D.C., devoted grandnieces, Betty L. Rolack of St. George, S.C., Tilwonda Law, Valerie Mevane and Angela Aiken, all of Washington, D.C., a devoted nephew, Walter Aiken, Jr., of Maryland. She is also survived by numerous great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, other relatives and friends.
THOMPSON, Sarah
KINGSTREE - Sarah Lee Parker Thompson, Sr., died Wednesday in a Charleston hospital.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Horry Co., a daughter of the late Thaddeus B. and Florrie Edge Parker. She attended Horry Co. schools and was a retired bookkeeper. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kingstree.
Surviving are, two daughters, Helen T. McGill of James Island, Kathy T. Dorrell of Kingstree; one son, Charles L. Thompson of Woodbridge, Va.; one sister, Eva Dale P. Morton of Conway; two brothers, Daniel Parker and Jack Parker, both of Conway, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, in the WILLIAMSBURG FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, with burial in Williamsburg cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, at the Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to MUSC for Alzheimers and Cancer research.
