BARONE, Bartolo
Dr. Bartolo Mariano Barone, 68, husband of Mary Pringle Herrin Barone of Seabrook Island, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002. Dr. Barone was born Tuesday, May 15, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, NY, the son of Bartolo M. and Gertrude Granata Barone. He was a graduate of Georgetown University, Washington, DC, where he received his B.S. and M.D. Dr. Barone completed his residency at Neurological Surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He was a former Chief of Neurology and President of Roper Hospital and Chief of Neurosurgery at St. Francis Xavier Hospital, as well as a consultant neurosurgeon with numerous other hospitals and facilities in the Charleston area. He was on the Board of Commissioners of Roper Hospital, serving as Vice Chairman and Chairman, the Board of Directors, Roper Foundation, serving as Chairman and Vice Chairman, and current Board Chairman of Commun - I - Care, a non-profit organization providing health care to the working poor. Dr. Barone was a member of the Medical Society of South Carolina, past president of the SC Medical Association, Southern Neurological Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, past president of the SC Neurosurgical Society, American College of Surgeons, Carolina Yacht Club, SC Historical Society, a life member of the Navy League of US, Seabrook Island Club, the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's Church, the Board of Directors of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, current Board Chairman of the SC Organ Procurement Agency and the Board of Directors of Project Case. He has authored numerous publications during his career. Dr. Barone was an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Georgetown University, US Naval Hospital, Charleston and Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at MUSC. Surviving are his wife of Seabrook Island; three daughters, Florence Mary Barone of Benzonia, MI, Caroline B. Schultz of Sammamish, WA, Elizabeth B. Luzuriaga of Mt. Pleasant; two stepsons, Dr. Rudolph B. Rustin of Mt. Pleasant, Ralford H. Rustin of Folly Beach; a sister, Anna Maria Barone of Clinton Corners, NY; and 7 grandchildren. Edward Parker Crouch, Jr., 67, of North Charleston, died Tuesday, September 17, 2002, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He was born June 29, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Edward Parker and Mary O'Neil Crouch. VARNER, Caroline
Caroline Hill Varner, 85, of Lebanon, SC, widow of Walter Herbert Varner, died September 17, 2002 in Charleston County.

Mrs. Varner was born October 16, 1916, a daughter of Fred Hill and Ammie Varner Hill. She was a homemaker. She graduated from Ridgeville High School and was a member of Cypress United Methodist Church.
She is survived by sons, Bruce Varner of Lebanon, Lukie Varner of Moncks Corner; brother, Ben Hill of Lebanon; sister, Martha Grooms of Lebanon; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.

KASSIS, Najib
Najib John Kassis, 79, of Charleston, husband of S. Nouha Kassis, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2002, at a local hospital. Born Zahle, Lebanon to the late Aziz and Zakia Shahid Kassis. Mr. Kassis was co-owner of Kassis Brothers Shoe Store. John and his brother Fred Kassis started the shoe store in Zahle, Lebanon, then opened in Australia, and finally came to Charleston, SC to open at 237 King St. After many years of building special orthopedic shoes for people, they then moved their business to 1890 Sam Rittenburg Blvd. Since that time for the past 10 years, Mr. John Kassis has been very ill, by his side for 33 years, his wife Nouha, has cared for him every step of the way. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and like his entire family he was a devoted family man. Surviving Mr. Kassis is his wife; a son, Tony M. Kassis and his wife Amy of Columbia, SC; two daughters, Camille Stebbins and her husband Mike of Charleston, and Kelly Kassis of Charleston; two brothers, Fred and Raymond Kassis, both of Charleston; two sisters, Yvonne Shahid and Renee Kadlecik, both of Charleston; many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6:30 - 8:30 PM Wednesday, September 18, with a Christian Rosary Service beginning at 7 PM at McAlister-Smith Downtown Chapel, 150 Wentworth St. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Thursday, September 19, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mr. Pike was born October 14, 1939, in Concord, New Hampshire, a son of Bradford Everett and Emily Hause Pike. Mr. Pike was an Episcopalian. He was a retired Senior Chief Hull Maintenance Technician with the U.S. Navy serving during the Vietnam War and also retired from Bayer Corporation with the maintenance department.
Surviving are his wife of Goose Creek, S.C.; his mother, Emily Hause Pike Olari of Athol, Mass.; a son, Philip Bradford Pike, Jr., of Cottageville, S.C.; a daughter, Annette Marie Russell of Goose Creek, S.C.; a brother, Stephen Pike of Gardner, Mass.; two sisters, Cydne "Beth" Daniels of Gardner, Mass., and Leslie Osborne of Fitchburg, Mass.; and a granddaughter, Shemaiah Marie Yates of Portland, Ore.
BROADWELL, Christine
Christine Mayer Broadwell, 71, loving mother, grandmother and a retired systems administrator with Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Saturday, September 14, 2002, at her home in North Charleston, S.C. Born December 13, 1930, in Elligen, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Ludwig and Christine Mayer (nee Hausner). She was a graduate of Webster University, where she received the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. She graduated from Baptist College at Charleston, S.C., Magna cum Laude and also received degrees from Trident Technical College. While at Lockheed, Christine received the Twenty-Year Lockheed and Field Ballistic Missile Certificates. She was a President and Member of the Board of Directors of the Lockheed Charleston Chapter of the National Management Association, and received the chapter's President's Service Award for 1985-1987. Christine also was an adjunct professor of computers and German at Webster University, Limestone College, and Trident Technical College. A talented musician, Christine enjoyed playing the accordion, piano and singing for many Lowcountry events including Oktoberfests, Robert Ivy Theater Productions, and for nursing homes and hospitals. She was the organist for St. Theresa Catholic Church in North Charleston. Christine and her late husband, Lee, were charter members of the General W.C. Westmoreland/Charleston Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars. She was also a member of the International Club, the Edelweiss Singers, and Toastmasters of Charleston. She enjoyed gardening and bridge. preceded in death by her husband, Lee Broadwell. She is survived by her children, Louis Broadwell of North Charleston, S.C.; Carl Broadwell of North Charleston, S.C.; Romy Rivera and her husband, Edgar, of Charleston, S.C.; and Patricia Stephenson and her husband, Paul, of Allendale, Mich.; and one sister, Georgine Mayer de da Silva, of Asuncion, Paraguay; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She had one brother, Carl Ludwig Mayer. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, September 19, 2002, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home Goose Creek Chapel, 100 S. MINSHEW, Oliver
Oliver G. "Bubba" Minshew, Jr., 81, of Johns Island, husband of the late Jean F. Minshew, passed away on Monday, September 16, at a local hospital. Born in Marion County to the late Oliver G. and Marie Hanahan Minshew, Sr., Mr. Minshew retired from the United States Postal Service, and then worked as a greeter at Blue Flame Gas Company. He was a lifelong resident of Johns Island, a member of Faith Lutheran Church on Johns Island, and a devoted family man. Surviving "Bubba" Minshew is his son, William Lee Minshew of Charleston, Jeanne K. Warford and her husband Stanley of Immokalee, Fla., four brothers, Henry Minshew of Johns Island, Charles Minshew of Conway, S.C., Ralph Hanahan of Johns Island, and Joseph Minshew of Charleston, two sisters, Grey Geissler of Beaufort, S.C., and Mary O'Neal of Johns Island. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Tammy Bass and her husband Richard of Labelle, Fla., and Katherine Price and her husband Lane of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and five great-grandchildren, Derek and Victoria Bass, Megan, Matthew, and Zachary Price. She had retired as a material handler with the Naval Supply Center in Charleston, S.C., and Norfolk, Va. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post 641, Columbia, S.C.
Surviving are her husband of Norfolk, Va.; her mother, Ruth Crosby Anderson Bailey of Beaufort, S.C.; her children, Tommy Maguire of Rock Hill, S.C., and Terra Maguire of Charleston, S.C.; step-children, Amanda Dodd, Kelly Dodd and David Dodd all of Columbia, S.C.; sisters, Sheila Jaskiewicz of Niantic, Conn., Myrtle Crabb of Cottageville, S.C., and Lisa Horner of Summerville, S.C.; brothers, Ben Smith of Augusta, Ga., and Greg Anderson of Norfolk, Va.; her aunt, Grace Smith of Beaufort, S.C., and ten grandchildren.
