GIKNIS, Nellie
Nellie Mary Willis Giknis, 98, formerly of Goose Creek, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Lake Moultrie Nursing Home in St. Stephens.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, entombment will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Born April 29, 1903, in New Haven, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Peter and Katherine Stampovicz Willis. She was a retired assembly worker with Gray Mfg., in Hartford, Conn. Mrs. Giknis was a member of the Goose Creek Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Giknis.
Survivors include, daughters, Theresa M. Carroll of Manning and Helen Cole of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren, Linda Skipper of Manning, James Cole of Wautuga, Texas, Bud Cole of Thornton, Colo., June Richardson of Billings, Montana, Barbara Weese of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Thomas Cole of Irving, Texas; 16 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME.
In loving memory of our Nanny, thank you for taking care of us, Brenda and Shelly.

SPENCER, Patricia
Patricia Maguire Spencer, 74, died March 29, 2002, in a local hospital. The Mass of Christian burial will be at Stella Maris Catholic Church, Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. with completion of funeral plans and burial in Warwick, R.I. The family will receive friends at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, EAST COOPER CHAPEL, 1520 Rifle Range Road, 884-3833 between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m., Monday, April 1, where the rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, S.C. 29482.

BERGEN, Luther
Luther M. Bergen, 85, of Hanahan, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Heartland Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment will follow in Carolina Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Born December 29, 1916, in Brigham City, Utah, he was a son of the late Luther M. and Marie E. Bjorndal Bergen. He was a graduate of Box Elder High School, where he played football and played in the band. He is a graduate of Utah State University with a BS Degree in Biology. Immediately after graduating, he joined the U.S. Air Force. After basic training, he was sent to England with the 8th Air Force. He completed 25 missions before being wounded. After his recovery he was sent to the Pacific with the 20th Air Force. After the war ended he returned to Charleston and took a teaching job at Murray Vocation High School. He received a National Science Foundation Scholarship to the University of Virginia where he received a Masters Degree in Education. He became Principal of Murray Vocation High School, later Moultrie High School and was the first principal of Wando High School where he retired from teaching. While he was with Charleston County School District, he served as president of Charleston County Education Association. He was also on Coastal Carolina Conference of Athletics Committee. He served 20 years with North Charleston Zoning Board of Adjustment. While in the service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, also a Certificate of Valor from the President of the United States. He retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Col. He is a past member of Retired Air Force Association, National Retired Teachers of Charleston. Also a past member of the Civitan of Charleston.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Bergen of the home; two sons, Luther M. Bergen, III of Spartanburg and Allen J. Bergen of Columbia; two sisters, Neoma M. Emery and Lucy Irine Earl both of Brigham City, Utah; a brother, Karl L. Bergen, of St. George, Utah; three granddaughters and one grandson.
The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to service at CAROLINA MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, April 2, 2002.

KINSEY, Essie
Essie C. Alday Kinsey, widow of Louis G. Kinsey of Bonneau, S.C., formerly of Mount Pleasant, died March 30, 2002 in a local hospital. The Memorial Service will be Monday evening, April 1, 2002 in Moncks Corner Pentecostal Holiness Church, 207 Newell Street, at 7:00 o'clock. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to service. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Mrs. Kinsey was born in Donaldsonville, Georgia, a daughter of Henry and Clara E. Alday.
Surviving are two sons, Glenn Kinsey and Joseph F. Kinsey of Bonneau, S.C.; one daughter, Nancy C. George of Tennessee, daughter-in-law, Linda Kinsey of Bonneau, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

SINGLETARY, Charles
Entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning, March 31, 2002, Charles William Singletary, husband of Millie Jackson Singletary. Residence: Goose Creek, South Carolina. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Charles William Singletary are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in First Baptist Church of Goose Creek, Tuesday afternoon, April 2, 2002 at 2 o'clock. Interment: Plantation Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL this (Monday) evening, April 1, 2002, between the hours of 6 and 8.
Mr. Singletary was born on January 3, 1937 in Charleston, South Carolina, a son of the late Stephen and Aresa Wagers Singletary. He was employed as a dispatcher for Banks Construction and was formerly a volunteer firefighter for North Charleston and Goose Creek Fire Departments for 36 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Goose Creek.
Mr. Singletary is survived by his loving wife of Goose Creek, S.C.; two nephews, Stephen Rourke of Nashville, Tenn., and Jerry Rourke of James Island, S.C.; and three brothers-in-law, James Rourke of James Island, S.C., Autry G. Horne and J.P. Jackson, both of St. George, S.C.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice, 2070 Northbrook Blvd., Suite B-1, North Charleston, S.C. 29406.

BANKS, Dorothy
Entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 31, 2002, Dorothy Elizabeth Blake Banks, wife of Homer Howard Banks. Residence: North Charleston, South Carolina. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Howard Banks are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., GREENRIDGE ROAD CHAPEL, Tuesday afternoon, April 2, 2002 at 1 o'clock. Interment: Carolina Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Stuhr's Greenridge Road Chapel this (Monday) evening between 6 and 8 o'clock.
Mrs. Banks was born December 13, 1924, in Fayetteville, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Theodore and Nora Blake. Mrs. Banks was educated in the public schools of West Virginia and had at one time been a telephone operator.
Surviving Mrs. Banks are her husband of North Charleston, S.C.; and two sisters, Nora and Minnie, both of Fayetteville, West Virginia.
