Mrs. Leitch was born in Charleston, S.C., a daughter of Edward North Millar and Lucille Bonnell Millar. She was a graduate of Memminger High School, Charleston, S.C. and Rice Business College. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and retired from MUSC.
She is survived by one daughter, Betsy Buhtz of Canada; two sons, John A. Leitch, Jr., wife, Patty and Donald N. Leitch, wife, Eileen of Charleston, S.C.; one grandson, Daniel E. Leitch of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Arthur Millar of San Leandro, Calif., and James Millar, wife Jane of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Mrs. Tylee was born October 28, 1903 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of William James Dennis and Hattie Davis Dennis. She retired as a schoolteacher. She was a member of Rutledge Memorial Baptist Church and Exxon Annuitant Club.
She is survived by six nephews: Dennis G. Jurs, M.D. of Spartanburg, SC, Barry H. Jurs of Macbeth, SC, Albert Dennis of Johnsonville, SC, Lawrence Tylee, William J. Tylee and Walter Tylee all of Charleston, SC; one sister-in-law: Katherine D. Dennis of Johnsonville, SC.

Master Matthew Allen Hunt, infant son of Michael and April Hunt, died November 21, 2002, at a local hospital.

SLICK, Arthur
Arthur Finley Slick, S/SGT Retired, age 83, passed away, Thursday, November 21, 2002, in Paducah, Ky. Mr. Slick was a native of Sidman, Pa., and a long time resident of Jacksonville, a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church, Paducah, Ky., and retired from the U.S. Marine Corp after 30 years of service, serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Mr. Slick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Minnie Lee Slick, two daughters, Debra Slick, Stephanie Choudhury; a sister, Ruth A. McDevitt; four brothers, Emile, James, Sammuel, and Charles Slick; three grandchildren, Dolphin Kelley, Rebecca and Zia Choudhury. Funeral services were held Monday, November 25, 2002, at 1 p.m., in the CHAPEL OF GEORGE H. HEWELL AND SON NORTHSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 4747 Main Street. Fr. Dai Mai officiated followed by interment in Evergreen cemetery with full Military Honors.
He authored many articles appearing in local, state and national publications. He was a former contributing Editor of Medical Economics.
He was a former president of Brennan School PTA where he was awarded a life membership and recognized for assisting in beginning a physical fitness program in elementary schools. He was a member and former President of the Camellia Ball. He was a member of Trinity Cathedral where he was a lay reader and former vestryman. He served on the Bishop’s Commission on Aging for the Upper Episcopal Diocese of S.C. He was a member of Columbia Rotary Club, Carolina Yacht Club, Forest Lake Club, Society of Cincinnati, Men of World Wars, Executive Sertoma Club; and former member of Columbia Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of S.C. Historical And S.C. Writer’s Workshop. He was a member of the USC’s Centurion Club serving as Vice-president and President. He is listed in Who’s Who in Health Care and Medicine and has been listed in Who’s Who in America since 1964. In 1999, using his war memoirs, he wrote and published Tin Can Sailor.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years Lillian Pearce Hair Jervey; daughter Nancy Jervey, sons Ned (Barbara Bullard) Jervey, Charley (Helen Schachter) Jervey MD, daughters Peggy (Dr. Jimmy) Stands, Harriet (English) Morris, Helen (Hall) Hunt, Lil (Dwight) Sparks. Grandchildren; Christopher (Maryanna) and Hayden Stands, Alycia (Beau) Bara, and Margaret Morris, Hall Jr., Mimi and Andrew Hunt, Heather, Thomas and Sean Jervey, Paul, Robert and Michael Sparks. Great grandchildren Kylie and Bailey Bara.
He was a member of the Columbia Medical Society and has served as secretary, member of the executive committee, chaired various committees and was on the Editorial Advisory Board of the monthly bulletin for many years; S.C. Medical Association serving on various committees and the Editorial Advisory Board of its monthly Journal; the American Medical Association where he was Liaison member to the Council on Medical Education 1958-60; Consultant to Disciplinary committee 1955-60; member of the Speaker’s Bureau; Drug Abuse Committee 1980-84; Health Policy Agenda Task force 1982-84. He served on Committees of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Association of Medical Colleges. He was a member of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Family Practice serving on and chairing several committees. He was a Delegate to the Congress of Delegates of the American Academy of Family practice from 1956-60. He was a member and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice.
Dr. Jervey was appointed to the S.C. Board of Medical Examiners in 1953 and served until 1972. He held the offices of Secretary and Vice-Chairman for several years. He was elected to the Board of Directors of Federation of State medical Boards of the USA in 1957 and continued as an officer until his retirement in 1984. During this time he was elected to all chairs including the Editorship of the monthly Bulletin. He was the only South Carolinian to serve as president; the youngest; the first full time Executive Vice president and the only member to hold all offices since it was formed in 1912. In 2000 he was recognized for his many years of leadership by being presented with a lifetime achievement award. No one else has been given such an award.
He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Educational Commission for foreign medical graduates in 1972; served as vice -chairman in 1977; President and Chairman of the Board 1978-80. During his tenure he traveled world wide under the auspices of the State Department as a Good -Will Ambassador explaining our Health Care policies to the medical leaders of other countries.
Dr. Jervey was a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties 1959-70; Board of Directors of the Federation of the Association Of Health Regulatory Boards (FAHRB) 1977-82; member South Carolina Hospital Commission 1970-75. He was a former member of the Governor’s Ad Hoc committee on Medicare-Medicaid; Board of Directors of Richland County Cancer Society and awarded Certificate of merit for services; Board of Governors of Midlands Youth Homes Inc; S.C.; Heart Association’s Task Force on Hypertension; and Advisory board of Who’s Who in America . He was former president of General Practitioner’s Club of Central S.C. and the Columbia Medical Club. He was a guest lecturer in Medical Ethics to the senior class of USC Law School. He was a faculty member of the Baptist Hospital’s School of Nursing.
JERVEY, JR., Harold
COLUMBIA - Services for Dr. Harold E. Jervey, Jr., a recognized authority in Medical Licensure and International Medical Education, will be held Sunday at 2:30 pm at Trinity Cathedral with burial in Trinity Church yard. Dr Jervey died Thursday, November 28, 2002. He was born in Charleston S.C. son of the late Harold Edward and Stella White Jervey. He received his education in the public schools of Charleston and Columbia, S.C. He graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from the University of South Carolina. He was on the Dean’s honor list and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Dr. Jervey entered the Navy’s V-7 program in 1940; serving on board the USS Quincy. He attended midshipman’s school at the USS Prairie State in New York City and was commissioned as Ensign USNR -E in September 1941 and ordered to active duty. He served on destroyers in all combat areas, primarily the Pacific beginning with Guadalcanal through the recapture of the Philippines. He was one of the first of the V-7 program graduates to qualify as both a Deck and Engineering Officer. His last assignment was as Executive Officer of the USS Conner DD 582. He was discharged in October 1945 as a Lieutenant Commander. He was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. He was eligible to wear all area ribbons with 16 battle stars. He was recommissioned in 1973 as a Captain in the Medical Corps.
Following the war he graduated with an MD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He interned at the Greenville General Hospital and was House Officer at the Baptist Hospital in Columbia, S.C. He was a General Practitioner in Columbia for 25 years. He is a former member of the staffs of the Baptist, Richland Memorial, Providence and Lexington County Hospitals where he also served on various committees.
